WHO. CARES.
ofcourseyoudo··on AI is slowing down
I guess my ears kind of turn off when you say "it's all slop, none of the apps are good, and it's a failure because no one has used AI to make the next Salesforce".

I have found agentic coding to be extremely useful for a bunch of small, middleware, very focused bits of software for small businesses:

* A company had a very specific scheduling need, they needed to move about 8-15 staff around with a bunch of different shifts, and have custom reports on who was working how many hours, and have the employees get a nice clean email summarizing their schedule

* A manager wanted a very simple "let me send a text to add a to-do to the group list" need

* A sales team of 3 wanted to be able to type pricing of raw goods into their phone, have it compared to other market sources, and have it text the other 2 salespeople and their manager when they were out in the field

All of these were coded with Codex in about 4 hours with further refinements over the next week of back-and-forth with the people using the tools.

I suppose yes we could have found some custom middleware solutions that did similar things, but it's nice to be able to make a web page or tiny mobile app that just does EXACTLY what the person wants.

It's hard to do that and then listen to someone who says it's all just garbage.

ofcourseyoudo··on Vibe Coding Is Not Engineering
genuine question. if i have a tightly-defined unit test and Claude writes a blob of code that passes it, does it matter what's in the blob?

ofcourseyoudo··on Please Use AI
if "false dichotomy" was a whole ass essay

as if you're choosing between "Claude, tell me how to make an omelette" and walking across the forest path to your sylvan neighbor, the former Michelin-star chef who set up an artisanal microgastropub by the pond

as opposed to googling "omelet recipe"

ofcourseyoudo··on The dead economy theory
I think missing from the turns is when companies do AI layoffs, then realize they aren't as productive as they thought and have to rehire 70% of the people they let go.
ofcourseyoudo··on Clanker: A Word for the Machine
it reminds people (or specifically, very online gen Z and gen alpha) of the N-word because there was a popular TikTok account that mapped "clanker" to 1960s civil rights parody videos and it was clear he was substituting it for the N-word
ofcourseyoudo··on America's Greatest Strategic Blunder: The Imprisonment of Qian Xuesen
The kneejerk accusations of LLM even when it passes easily-available tests is intellectually lazy and does not belong on HN.
ofcourseyoudo··on The Rage of the Billionaires Is Coming
I think it's more just bragging about how "powerful" their companies are while knowing they're on top of a bubble that will burst and they'll have to get a bailout from Daddy Trump.
ofcourseyoudo··on Mocked by a scandal sheet, Kierkegaard endured months of personal attacks
84% likely human on zerogpt, but you could have done that yourself.
ofcourseyoudo··on 49,000 Lake Tahoe residents will lose power to data centers
>The data centers are being used to power the AI models that have been taking the technology world by storm.

This isn't really true, is it? They are being built and designed to be AI-ready, but as of today, more electricity and usage is for cloud and video storage/streaming.

ofcourseyoudo··on You did no fact checking, and I must scream
I think a much smaller percentage of smart high school seniors want to go into journalism at all. And if they do they'll probably just start a TikTok debating people
ofcourseyoudo··on The Great Feminization
Yeah there's a few red flags here that belie the problem with this piece.

Women emphasize "empathy over rationality" ... what a strange dichotomy. As if empathy could not be rational, or rational thought automatically leads to dis-empathy.

She asserts that feminine culture emphasizes cohesion, but then brings up a biracial (what's the point of this note?) reporter at the NYT not having coffee with Bari Weiss and says that this snub is "feminine". What? Are woman about cohesion or not? The previous graph would assert that colleagues would have coffee to not hurt each others' feelings, but then she claims the backhanded animosity ALSO as feminine.

Make up your mind, woman.

ofcourseyoudo··on Elon Musk urges parents to cancel Netflix over 'transgender woke agenda'
What is the "false information" being pushed here? That transgender people exist?

Anyone who has watched "Dead End" knows the only "propaganda" it is pushing is that trans kids exist and one particular one (Barney) feels more comfortable expressing what they feel is their most authentic identity.

Also what is the comparative exposure of LGBTQ experience as seen in children's programming versus the amount of heterosexual experience they are shown?

ofcourseyoudo··on Americans face biggest increase in health insurance costs in 15 years
"The biggest impact I have experienced so far has been that popups for cam sites, porn sites and other such affiliate marketting referal attempts lead to an age verification page rather than directly to all the "hot singles in my area looking for sex"

oh my, empathy stat is high on this one

ofcourseyoudo··on The Bethesda Declaration
No, that's not "exactly what you're trying to say". You asserted incorrectly that the UK findings were that gender care does not help at all. By any genuine reading of the study it absolutely doesn't say that. This is intellectually disingenous.
ofcourseyoudo··on The Bethesda Declaration
One piece of evidence is drastically reduced rates of suicide in children that get gender-affirming care. This has been shown in multiple studies and metastudies. That's enough for me.
ofcourseyoudo··on Being fat is a trap
Regarding the mental element, many people report that GLP-1 drugs help calm the "food buzz" running thoughts constantly obsessing about food all day. It can help you step out of the cycle and most likely would make therapy, meditation and books more effective.
ofcourseyoudo··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
to clarify I meant a personal assistant that is an actual human but accessible via email/text, not someone that is actually with you physically
ofcourseyoudo··on Why old games never die, but new ones do
"Far more people are playing UT99 than in the past as you just need to download it there and play it."

This is laughably untrue.

But mostly this article just says "old good games are old and good". It's nice that they run on anything, but comparing the current slate of new-ish games against... the entire history of PC gaming, I actually think new games are doing just fine:

- Fortnite

- Apex Legends

- Valorant

- Overwatch

- COD

- League

- Dota 2

- Roblox

Heck there are still people playing Phasmophobia.

ofcourseyoudo··on Good Writing
Impossible to decouple the quality (or not) of his writing from the fact that he had already sold Viaweb to Yahoo at that point. Surely that drew early founders to YC as well.

ofcourseyoudo··on Tesla Regret Syndrome
Consumers have no agency in relation to General Dynamics or SpaceX.
ofcourseyoudo··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
This is a great answer.

But I'm curious what the answer would look like if every strata in it was not "things you can buy" but "things you can do with the money" ... if the "IMPACT" section was delineated at each level.

One of the things I envy the most about my rich friends is their capacity to be generous. They can materialize their compassion on a regular basis without having to balance their budget.

I'd like to see what that looks like at each of these wealth levels.

(One funny thing I noticed is that I have multiple friends with virtual personal assistants now, at middle class levels of weath/entrepreneurship... definitely not a rich man's thing anymore.)

ofcourseyoudo··on The Future Is Too Expensive – A New Theory on Collapsing Birth Rates
Genuine question: why do I care if birth rates are falling? There are plenty of people.
ofcourseyoudo··on The Female Gaze
It's because the personality attached to the guy on the right is no doubt way more into how he looks, and how impressed he wants people to be by how he looks.

It also means that dating him will include leaving chunks of every day for him to workout, and counting macronutrients at every meal.

The guy on the right looks like a self-involved boring person to hang out with. Well fit for sure! But what are you going to talk about beyond the benefits of creatine and whether or not you should get protein from whey?
