odysseus··on Germany to meet EU guidelines to ban single-use plastics by 2021
Who says plastic grocery bags are single-use, though?

Many people re-use them for dog/cat waste disposal, as laundry bags when traveling, packing material, soiled diaper disposal, for coating meat prior to cooking, etc.

Now those people have to buy more plastic for these things, instead of re-using what they received while shopping.

odysseus··on US online grocery sales hit record $7.2B in June
Wonder how they calculate this with any accuracy. They can't see the time you spend comparison shopping on other online sites to see if you're getting a good deal. (which you usually aren't - Target and Costco, for example, often dramatically raise their online prices vs. their in-store prices)

Agree on the farm boxes - had one of those and we were overloaded with produce. Bit expensive but once you taste fresh carrots it's hard to go back to store bought.

I do this as well. As an end-user, I actually find some telemetry useful to diagnose things like:

* Apple Watch battery cycle count (not viewable in any UI but is viewable in telemetry logs)

* Clues about why a particular app recently crashed

odysseus··on How to Write Email with Military Precision
The bottom line up front, I agree with. But I'm not sure why I would use giant ACTION KEYWORDS like "DECISION" or "COORD" in any of my subject lines, ever.

Why would you want to lend a cold, impersonal, robotic tone to your email?

I find it more effective to just write a concise subject in the form of a question. Include the question mark. No caps. If it hasn't been responded to, perhaps resend with "(second attempt)" at the beginning of the subject.

The solution here is to stay out of the merge lanes unless you need to merge.

And if you do need to merge, do so at the merge point, as per http://trafficwaves.org/seatraf.html

odysseus··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Exactly. I'll speak into my AirPods "Hey Siri, 30 minute outdoor walk" to start a 30 minute workout on my Apple Watch.

Half the time, Siri replies with "I'm sorry, you don't have an app for that. You can try searching for one on the app store."

Repeat the same exact query to the AirPods seconds later, and bam, it starts the workout on the Apple Watch.

odysseus··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
I've actually had this with Siri. I've asked about the wind and Siri gave me the definition of wind.

Other times it will tell me the wind speed.

Other times, for the same query, it will tell me the wind speed AND direction, which is what I want.

But it's always random what I get: wind speed, wind direction, a combination of both, or (occasionally) the definition of wind.

odysseus··on Siri, What Time Is It in London?
Curious if the address is correct in Apple Maps?

With Apple, I've submitted perhaps 5 corrections for 5 different (usually minor) problems in 5 years. Problems like a place claims to take Apple Pay when it doesn't. Or the actual place is across the street from where Maps claims it is.

In each case, Apple sends back a notification within 2-3 weeks saying they've fixed the problem, and when I've checked, it has always been resolved. Pretty happy with the service.

odysseus··on Bye, Amazon
It's interesting that Mr. Bray is declining to post comments on his site that are even slightly constructively critical of some of the things he's advocating for in this post. (Can anyone find a non-congratulatory or even slightly critical comment below his post on his site? Did I miss one?)

He has every right to filter negative comments, but it makes me not want to read his site further if all he does is post non-contrary opinions.

odysseus··on Bye, Amazon
Sure, another example:

“... a number of American cities have passed “living wage” laws, which are essentially local minimum wage laws specifying a higher wage rate than the national minimum wage law. Their effects have been similar to the effects of national minimum wage laws in the United States and other countries—that is, the poorest people have been the ones who have most often lost jobs.”

- Thomas Sowell, referencing the Public Policy Institute of California’s “Scott Adams and David Neumark, “A Decade of Living Wages: What Have We Learned?” California Economic Policy, July 2005, pp. 1–23.”

odysseus··on Bye, Amazon
On living wages in particular:

"A 2003 Cato Institute study cites data showing job losses in places where living wage laws have been imposed. This should not be the least bit surprising. Making anything more expensive almost invariably leads to fewer purchases. That includes labor."

Also:

"People in minimum wage jobs do not stay at the minimum wage permanently. Their pay increases as they accumulate experience and develop skills. It increases an average of 30 percent in just their first year of employment, according to the Cato Institute study."

Both of these are quotes from noted economist Thomas Sowell, who has done a lot of research into many studies on actual effects of living and minimum wage law.

As for the people you describe, there are plenty of people who make higher wages and are just as unreliable and untrustworthy. And there are plenty who do honest work for low wages, and work their way up.

odysseus··on Vitamin D Insufficiency is Prevalent in Severe Covid-19
Yes, if you want it to. Looking at my notifications screen in the app, it can notify about "D Window Events", and you can even specify the minimum angle of interest.

It can also notify upon solar noon, sunrise and sunset (not the same as a D window of opportunity), and give a daily supplement reminder. Each of these is individually configurable.

odysseus··on Vitamin D Insufficiency is Prevalent in Severe Covid-19
There is an app I've been using to track my Vitamin D for a few years now: http://dminder.ontometrics.com

(Not affiliated with the app, just happy with it.) It tells you the sun angle, peak hour of the day, and maximum time you should be in that day's sun based on your skin type, to avoid getting burnt while still getting enough D.

Be careful though - you might get a little OCD about Vitamin D tracking with this app. I did, and mainly use it now for checking how long it is safe to stay outdoors. (Instead of full blown tracking.)

I'd love to see Apple build-in a Low Power Mode that does basically the same thing Turbo Boost Switcher does:

Until Apple does this, I'm happy with my Turbo Boost Switcher Pro purchase.

odysseus··on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products
Where IS the AmazonBasics section? Is there a way to restrict searches to only Amazon white label products?
odysseus··on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products
What kind of "full data" would you want from the customer? Earlier, you mentioned their name. Why can't the customer's transaction be as anonymous as possible, if they choose to be?

It seems as if Amazon, likely prodded by the GDPR and CCPA, is limiting the personal information they share with third parties. I think that's a good thing, for the consumer at least.

odysseus··on Airbnb’s Coronavirus Crisis: Burning Cash, Angry Hosts and an Uncertain Future
I booked a clearly non refundable flight with an airline prior to the pandemic. The airline did the right thing and refunded (to a credit usable until Spring 2021) it a couple days ago.

I would expect Airbnb to do the similar. It might be up to the government to help landlords out, since the government is forcing the stay-in-place orders.
