odysseus··on On Corpspeak
The best managers I've had were none of these things. My favorite manager was one who genuinely listened to me and was also interested in helping me learn in ways that helped the company. He was an outstanding resource and help whenever I had a question about anything, especially if it was technical. He had a good bit of humor and sarcasm that poked through every now and then, but never in a mean way. He was Canadian and had the stereotypical Canadian niceness to him. I'd work for him again any day.
odysseus··on Inky Impression 5.7“ – Colour e-ink display for Raspberry Pi
It just worked for me. But I don’t have any gear older than 2015. Here are the device requirements: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212757

Looks like you need a Mac from 2015 or newer and an iPad from the same year. Depends on the model though. Similar to Sidecar, I think it depends on video encoding/decoding features introduced in Skylake chipsets, along with some newer version of Bluetooth.

There might be some hacky stuff you can do to get it to run, but I wouldn’t expect good performance or reliability.

You could always run the iPad with calendar/reminders in split screen with no Universal Control - if you have a gorilla arm.

odysseus··on Inky Impression 5.7“ – Colour e-ink display for Raspberry Pi
I use an old iPad via Universal Control for exactly this purpose: calendar/to-do list. It sits under my monitor and frees up a lot of screen real estate.
odysseus··on Why thinking hard makes us feel tired
I have the opposite problem - if I'm thinking too hard near bedtime about financial math or boolean algebra for example, I won't be able to sleep. My brain is too active going through all the calculations in my head.

If I want to fall asleep within 5 minutes, what works for me is varied physical and mental exercise throughout the day, and an easygoing book or movie near bedtime.

If there's something stressful going on the next day, a tech-nerd podcast like ATP helps me forget about it and get to sleep. But I try not to let late night podcasts become a habit - sometimes they get too interesting and I stay up for over an hour to keep listening.

odysseus··on America’s favorite family outings are increasingly out of reach
Yep. Yankee Stadium (at least when I went) allowed this too. We brought homemade deli sandwiches for the family and bought beers at the stadium.
odysseus··on My Poor Experience With Azure (or why I'm sticking with AWS)
AWS does have a couple of annoying un-configurable limitations:

* There is a Global Accelerator idle timeout of 340 seconds for TCP connections

* And a Global Accelerator idle timeout of 30 seconds for UDP flows.

These timeouts are not customer or support-configurable.

Many customers have requested configurable Global Accelerator timeouts and AWS at least has a feature request open for it, but we have no way of knowing how or if they're prioritizing that.

odysseus··on How I clean my glasses
I feel like this article lays the groundwork for a high quality artisanal eyeglass cleaning video.

Reminds me just a touch of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBb9O-aW4zI

odysseus··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
I have a non-Ring doorbell camera and while I can't prove it has deterred theft, it's pretty useful in at least:

* Getting a partial face/partial vehicle ID of someone who stole our package

* Seeing the sneaky method in which they stole the package (allowing me to talk to neighbors warning them about the method used)

* Getting a private instant announcement of who exactly is at the door (if they've been here before and they're in my contacts)

* Notifying us while on vacation that someone out of the ordinary is at the door (and being able to speak to them as if we were home)

* Deterring raccoons (bright light on the front of the camera)

Not-so-useful things:

* Seeing the large number of cars that like to use our driveway to make a U-turn

There is an option to turn off audio recording and all footage is encrypted.

odysseus··on Cities with Nice Weather
This reminds me of Kelly Norton’a Pleasant Places to Live, where you can search by ZIP code:

https://kellegous.com/j/2014/02/03/pleasant-places/

I wrote to him to try and get the places listed in table form, sortable CSV, but never received a reply.

odysseus··on IKEA's restaurants were failing, then it turned to Swedish meatballs
IKEA's food has always tasted like hospital cafeteria food/plane food to me. Really bland, low quality stuff. I'd rather get an Italian meatball sub somewhere. Or Swedish meatballs from a Swedish relative.

IKEA's desserts are OK though.

odysseus··on Report: 90% of nurses considering leaving the profession in the next year
I would think some hospitals have rooms dedicated for the on-call nurse(s) to sleep in. Especially with something as common and false alarm prone as overnight labor & delivery. Pretty sure the midwifery I went to had this.
odysseus··on 100 People with rare cancers who attended same NJ high school demand answers
Reminds me of this article also about NJ: https://www.nytimes.com/1996/09/29/nyregion/living-with-a-ra...

“Half a mile away, in Orange, is the abandoned factory where the U.S. Radium Corporation made luminous watch dials from 1915 to 1926. At the time, nobody knew radium was dangerous; it was only after women who worked at the factory began getting sick and dying of cancer that the Essex County medical examiner, Dr. Harrison A. Martland, spotted the connection.

By that time, soil tainted with radioactive tailings from the factory had been used to fill in low-lying areas of Essex County -- a total of 210 acres in Glen Ridge, Montclair and West Orange. It was not until 1981 that the E.P.A. -- as part of a national initiative -- conducted an aerial survey of the 12 square miles around the U.S. Radium plant. Ground surveys over the next two years confirmed the presence of dangerous gamma radiation, and the problem was first revealed publicly at the end of 1983.”

odysseus··on Hubble telescope has new lease on life after computer swap appears to fix glitch
Finally, for fans of Weird Al Yankovic's White & Nerdy, an excuse to reference Norm Sherman's Pimp My Satellite, which is all about the Hubble: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMXk5Y7Gv6Y
odysseus··on Image unshredding using a TSP solver
The painstaking process to put back together shredded Stasi documents is mentioned at the end of The Lives of Others: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405094/

Great movie, by the way.

odysseus··on My apartment was built on toxic waste
Are there any of these for other states?
odysseus··on The Framework Laptop
My Thinkpad fingerprint reader works in Linux. Well, it works perhaps 80-85% of the time. See https://askubuntu.com/questions/1231185/fingerprint-login-in...
odysseus··on Apple Tried Charging the Price of a New MacBook Pro for a Screen Replacement
How is it totally broken? iTunes Match is working for me.
odysseus··on Apple Tried Charging the Price of a New MacBook Pro for a Screen Replacement
Had the same thing happen with my wife’s Apple Music 3 month trial.

She accepted the trial, then went into settings to cancel the subscription so she wouldn’t be automatically charged at the end of 3 months.

With no warning, the subscription was then completely cancelled with no ability to use the rest of the trial. (Unlike some other Apple trials.) When asking Apple Support about this, they referenced an obscure sentence in their terms and conditions. They could do nothing to re-offer the trial to my wife. So consumer hostile.

odysseus··on Amazon's latest grocery store concept opens, with high-tech carts
Try Trader Joe’s - they have similar corn & flour tortillas under their house brand.
odysseus··on Lucid Air EV’s Battery Will Be 113.0 KWh
What is more comfortable about the Model S steering wheel?
odysseus··on Dishwashing detergent hack: Two ingredients (2015)
3 weeks prior to the automatic payment, the power company sends me a notice of the exact amount that's going to be taken out. I review it every month.
odysseus··on Dishwashing detergent hack: Two ingredients (2015)
Or better, have all your bills paid automatically.
odysseus··on The tragic physics of the deadly explosion in Beirut
Oh no. I really hope the bride and groom are OK!
odysseus··on Germany plans to dim lights at night to save insects
Some options:

* If the ivy is near pavement, you could scald it with a tea kettle.

* Add a bird bath and/or salt lick to the yard to encourage white-tailed deer to snack on it.

* Get a goat.

odysseus··on Germany plans to dim lights at night to save insects
Bumblebees like the clover too.
odysseus··on Vitamin D deficiency and Covid-19 mortality [pdf]
As I wrote at https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23025501 :

There is an app I've been using to track my Vitamin D for a few years now: http://dminder.ontometrics.com

(Not affiliated with the app, just happy with it.) It tells you the sun angle, peak hour of the day, and maximum time you should be in that day's sun based on your skin type, to avoid getting burnt while still getting enough D.

Be careful though - you might get a little OCD about Vitamin D tracking with this app. I did, and mainly use it now for checking how long it is safe to stay outdoors. (Instead of full blown tracking.)

odysseus··on Hacking Portable Air Conditioners
You can fit it in a sliding window. Go to the hardware store and buy a sheet of 1-inch thick foil backed insulating styrofoam. Cut it to fit perfectly above the AC unit.
odysseus··on Quiet route planning for pedestrians in traffic noise polluted environments
UPS already has a nav system that avoids right turns when possible - maybe they could license their routing.
odysseus··on Teachers are ready to quit rather than put their lives at risk
Why not have older teachers that are more at risk teach from home via video? Then have a younger proctor coordinate with kids in the classroom.
odysseus··on Lessons from the awkward life and death of the Segway
Great comment, and insight on what most people spend. Thanks!

Segway should have quickly introduced a low-priced variant under $1000. Kind of like OneWheel has, although there is no shortage of OneWheel crash videos.
