odshoifsdhfs··on Netflix Targets Critical ‘Cuties’ Tweets with Copyright Takedown Requests
> Is it normal for a 17 year old girl to behave like that on TV? How about 20?

I have seen 17/20 year olds in tv (I think, I don't double check actress ages, but I'm sure at least in porn there are 18 year old ones) and I WOULD NEVER expect to see a show/movie about 11 year olds emulating that.

And you are basically saying (because it is in tv) we should accept the same behaviour from an 11 year old as an 17 year old, which I strongly oppose. there is 6 years difference and A LOT of things in between for me to find it ok. I don't mind a 17/18 old to be naked on tv, I don't think it is ok for an 11 year old. I think it is ok for 17/18 year old to emulate sex/erotic things on tv, I don't think it is for a 11 year old.

There is also the concept of consent, which I don't think an 11 year old should be able to give to spread her legs on tv, while a 17 year old should (maybe not all but hey...).

I only watched some clips, so won't super address the movie context, but are you really comparing 11/12 year old girls dancing the same way as a 17 year old and say it is ok? So, is it ok to have sex with 12/13 year olds, since most girls a few years older (18) can do it with anyone? (and in Europe from 16?)

I am sorry but I don't understand. I hope it isn't what you are trying to say, but if you think a behaviour of an 11 year old is ok because a 17 year old also does it, I just can't agree and hate that train of thought.

odshoifsdhfs··on The West has failed – US and Europe have made a mess of handling the crisis
Well, you know how it is. This is in a socialist government with quite high taxes, but the money has to always flow to the upper echelon of society, not the poor mom or dad that want to feed their kids. But then again, you don't need a crisis, we have the money/production for everyone to have the minimum conditions to live, but hey, some billionaire wants another comma in their net worth so...
odshoifsdhfs··on The West has failed – US and Europe have made a mess of handling the crisis
I don't know, ask them.

I'm not defending government's actions here. I'm just showing what the 'angry people against lockdown' are feeling.

In Portugal the societal help was full of limitations (if you were self employed but made even 50 euros that month, you would get no help, but if you made nothing, you would get around 500, smart no? - it was later changed) and cuts but somehow we found 1.7 billion to save an already unprofitable and bankrupted airline which seems that will still need 100 million per month from government not to close.

odshoifsdhfs··on The West has failed – US and Europe have made a mess of handling the crisis
Because while you can work from home and have a paycheck, thousands (millions?) of small businesses are closing and the people rely on those to make their money. I could endure a lockdown for years (heck, I've worked remotely for 10), but my friends that own a restaurant? Screwed! My coach that needs the athletes to practise? Screwed! Friend's mother that sells her vegetables in farmers markets? Screwed! etc etc

And with these closing, less money all around, other businesses end up following suit, even if they aren't directly affected, they will be down the line.

odshoifsdhfs··on Lithuania is paying people to trade in polluting cars for escooters and ebikes
Maybe other Lithuanians can chime in (I'm not from there, but my girlfriend is), this is something that may only work in countries with similar geographic profile (Netherlands for example). I remember the drive from Riga to Lithuania or travelling by train there, and I don't remember seeing a flatter place in my life (and I've been to most European + American countries). When her parents visited they were surprised with how much we go 'up and down' in just my city alone.

I can see this working in some flatter areas of the country (same as I see bike adoption in those areas), but find the e-scooters at least too slow/battery hogs in this scenario (not sure about e-bikes though)

In any case, this is a right move for them, but I think pegging this usage to some kind of license is also important.

What kind of jobs are those?

In my country, except janitors and people working cafeteria, pretty much any job in healthcare requires some kind of degree (exception is taking care of old folks in private homes, but even those require a substancial amount of staff with some kind of schooling in it)

odshoifsdhfs··on Consumer Reports: Cadillac's Super Cruise Outperforms Tesla's Autopilot
I'm not sure if anything changed, but my CX-5 from 2015 had this. Maybe they don't consider it to be full hands off and thus have made this statement? It could center itself and drive within the same lane in a highway going around 100-120km/h without any involvement from me. It also nudged me to the lane whenever I tried to change lanes without using the blinker.
odshoifsdhfs··on 'Near extinction' of influenza in NZ as numbers drop due to lockdown
There are 5 mains highways that connect Portugal and Spain. Then are around 15 (can't find the details, from memory) that are normal roads where you can also do the crossing. Then you have several smaller roads you can also do the crossing. If you are really really into it, then you can also cross it by walking in several other places.

Having 24/7 border patrol between two land connected countries setup and agreed over 20+ crossing points isn't something easy to do, specially during a pandemic where those agents are also needed elsewhere (and there were border patrols along the mains roads, but not close to all).

Compare to only entering by airplane where you can a) prevent planes from landing by just sending an email (exaggerating) and b) anyone that lands goes through a funnel where you can easily quarantine them.

And you can't compare a city, with 1,285 km2 with a country of 92,212 km2 (and other countries even more) and talk about border controls. Portugal also did the same to a city with some success but still there were flaws in the patrolling.

odshoifsdhfs··on 'Near extinction' of influenza in NZ as numbers drop due to lockdown
New Zealand total passengers (all airports) per year is less than just JFK per year (59M JFK vs 43M all of NZ give or take)
odshoifsdhfs··on 'Near extinction' of influenza in NZ as numbers drop due to lockdown
Well, being an island a 'bit far away' certainly helped.

In Portugal I know folks that drove from London, Paris, Utrecht (Netherlands) and even Moscow to avoid the no fly laws so they could vacation here. I personally know 3 families that drove from Moscow to the Portuguese south during the lockdown period. (And I am sure based on the foreign plates I saw, various orders of magnitude more did so as well).

This is not to say it was all the foreigners, but it is much easier to control a pandemic if you can close all the borders (Madagascar anyone?) and have a smaller population. (This is also not to say NZers shouldn't be praised, but just a land border with 2-3 countries would probably see a lot of these efforts go to waste)

odshoifsdhfs··on VW sees EVs making up 90% of Norway sales in 2021
One thing I don't understand is how the EU public will afford this. I drive a Plugin Hybrid, but since moving from my old place and living in an apartment, I have no where to charge it. The closest charging station is around 12km from me and has 2 plugs (it is in an Aldi). After that there is another on 4-5 km after also with 2 plugs and one is mostly out of service.

I am all for lower emission vehicles, but most people in my country live in apartments, a lot of them without garages even. What will people do? (I end up charging my car at my parents when I need, but even so it is a PITA as I have to leave it there for a few hours and then walk back home for 10-15 minutes)

odshoifsdhfs··on Pointers from Portugal on Addiction and the Drug War
We did a lot of good things, but I wouldn't say those are the samples we want to use as examples for other countries.
odshoifsdhfs··on Principles of Data Oriented Programming
If you use simple data structures without logic, it is basically what he is saying. Basically `createAuthorData` is a data structure constructor. There are some advantages by using _.pick or something in JS land, but these don't work for other more strictly typed languages.

Also, I would be careful with using it so much as his example:

``` function createAuthorData(firstName, lastName, books) { return {firstName: firstName, lastName: lastName, books: books}; }
function fullName(data) { return data.firstName + " " + data.lastName; }
function createArtistData(firstName, lastName, genre) { return {firstName: firstName, lastName: lastName, genre: genre}; } ```
you can also do `fullName({firstName: 'Elmond', not:'really'})` and have an hard to catch bug (where an actual typesystem would catch it).
You can either use a Protocol for this (PersonName) or a base class (though those are going out of fashion nowadays)
odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Do you have inspiring spontaneous conversations while remote working?
Can I ask if it has gone down well because it actually did or because as in most of these things, people are 'afraid to speak up' and just go along with it?
I can't even imagine being in one of those calls. I prefer my personal life to have a good buffer from my work life (thus I speak about it as little as possible) and same for my co-workers personal lives.
I've seen these kinds of 'calls/meetings' to improve relationships in the work place, but whenever I talk off the record with folks (usually over drinks) most of them hate it and just go with it not to raise waves.
odshoifsdhfs··on Ask HN: Do you have inspiring spontaneous conversations while remote working?
I have been a professional developer for 20 years, 10 of those remote. He is right. If people learn how to work and communicate through async text, you can come up with ideas, exchange thoughts quite easily. Problem is, most people love to hear themselves talk so dismiss ways where they aren't the 'center of attention'. I would say in 20 years, less than 5% of the 'meetings' or 'coffee chats' couldn't have been done through slack/irc/whatever.
regarding Steam friends, you can read here the Epic VP response: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhoenixPoint/comments/b0rxdq/epic_g...
And the following miriad of people showing that Epic is getting much more info than it says they do, even before asking permission (including even steam's games play time)
(it was the top post for me searching 'epic games store scan entire pc' btw)
Regarding the email thing, I said thousands (maybe millions) as I have no clue of the number, but remember easily over 300 comments in a'me too' kind of way on reddit when this happened.
Edit: even Tim admitted they fucked up after being found: https://www.reddit.com/r/PhoenixPoint/comments/b0rxdq/epic_g...
> The current implementation is a remnant left over from our rush to implement social features in the early days of Fortnite. odshoifsdhfs··on Tim Sweeney on Apple and Google
They had security breaches.
They has some issues where people could use any email to register an account without verification, leaving thousands (millions?) without a way to register their own valid emails.
They were caught scanning your pc for everything to 'provide a better experience' if you had some things installed.
And if (want to think) they are 'fighting' for openness, 'buying' rights to games and taking them out of other stores.
All of them can be easily googled so not going to spend time providing sources
odshoifsdhfs··on Sweden’s low positive test rate ‘vindicates coronavirus strategy’
I never understood that part (compare to neighbours).
There are so many different variables between countries, even neighbour ones, that it makes no sense.
Sweden old people homes are (from what I read) basically glorified death waiting rooms. People don't stay in them long (months vs years in other places). Also people movements during the high 'season' of covid spread is different (Students do different things in spring break between countries). etc etc etc etc.
Not saying Norway or whatnot is not doing better, just we don't really know. (Same as saying Portugal is doing great because look at it's neighbour spain kind of deal)
odshoifsdhfs··on Sweden’s low positive test rate ‘vindicates coronavirus strategy’
I didn't cherry pick portugal. I used it as it is my country and I have the most data about it. I also used it because we were called 'the miracle' from media from Eastern Europe to even US media, and I didn't want to say anything about other countries that I could back up with evidence.
Today we had 680+ cases. Our ICU patients are increasing, but for 3+ months I heard how we were doing so much better than Sweden, how they were idiots, etc. But Since the beginning we had researches from the UK, our medical professionals, saying that we had too much excess deaths not being counted as COVID (statistically very improbably increase not being related) and we still kept acting like Swedish were idiots.
Now they have like 100 cases per day or so, with a test rate almost double that we have, when we are on average on 400, and climbing every week (was 200 daily average, then 250, 300 and now we are around 400).
They also has a 8% GDP drop vs 16% for PT, and we got into much more debt than they did to 'pay' for all the stopped economy, which they didn't (as much)
odshoifsdhfs··on Sweden’s low positive test rate ‘vindicates coronavirus strategy’
No clue, but Portugal has almost real time reporting of deaths here: https://evm.min-saude.pt
They mentioned euromomo but also have countries not in it, so I assume they use various sources?
odshoifsdhfs··on Sweden’s low positive test rate ‘vindicates coronavirus strategy’
They had 5838 COVID deaths, and around 5900 excess deaths.
Portugal has 1800ish COVID deaths, 5800 excess deaths.
Yes, Sweden fucked up and Portugal is amazing! OR maybe, just maybe, either COVID deaths are counted differently OR the lockdowns caused people that wouldn't have died of COVID to die for other causes due to lack of treatment and support.
odshoifsdhfs··on PandaDoc employees arrested in Belarus after founders protest against violence
Yes, in general the ones that left are more pro EU than russia (though the ones that left for Moscow are more pro Russia).
And I agree that EU should put more pressure on the whole subject. I see the eastern countries like Lithuania, Poland and Latvia trying to make waves/raise concerns, but central and western Europe not so much (ask a Portuguese where Belarus is, and he won't know) and are more invested in the BLM issues than what is happening at the EU borders (in Portugal, most don't event know what is going on there when I talk with them.
I wish all the best to the belarussian people, and they have shown to the world their desire but also their alues by their way of correctly and peacefully way to protest and demand change. I hope it is not for nothing.
Ukraine yes, Belarus youth don't seem to align with EU that much. They just want a freaking democratic country. Most favour Russian values over EU ones.
