odammit··on The Declining Value of a CS Master's Degree (2013)
The point is, you can learn everything you learn at university on your own.*

If employers verify the knowledge and not the degree - then the degree is worthless.

My degree is worthless. I’ve never been turned down for a job, never fired, and I’ve had a great career and have a great job currently. NO ONE has ever asked about my degree.

* in CS. Obvi it’s important for some careers like medicine.

odammit··on BMW says electric car mass production not viable until 2020
That super niche boat is in a fleet of boats that are killing off old businesses that are lagging behind. Sure BMW may be doing great today, but how long until they’re a Borders.

I don’t agree with you, but I did use your golang auth project the other day. Good work! Thanks!

Ohhhh yeah. Go watch some of the videos on yt. Their brutally awkwardly hilarious.

It’s just a matter of time before there is a code like “selling new pink shoes for roses” in the clothing section. Will they shut that down too?

Don’t forget the video dating.

Go start GunTube and make a buck or two!

I was reading earlier today people are uploading their gun vids to PornHub.

odammit··on The Declining Value of a CS Master's Degree (2013)
My masters was a waste of time and money - except that it’s been a job requirement for multiple jobs.

None of which asked for proof.

I think my bachelors was too besides the social experience of college (I’m from a small town).

Most of what I learned was already familiar to me from developing as a hobby and I learned way more from studying stuff I was interested in than bubble-sorting and SAP case studying my way into boredom for an extra year.

The boat that has all the $100k sales on it from people that don’t want to wait 2-3 years for a BMW.

That boat. It’s red row boat in case you’re curious.

odammit··on BMW says electric car mass production not viable until 2020
Exactly! Besides maybe the “entertainment package”.

I’ll end up buying a Tesla because it’s fully electric. I was on the wait list for a Model 3, but my previous volt lemon’d and I couldnt wait until an unknown delivery date, so I bought another Volt.*

The volt for now gets me the round trip. I need to charge anything beyond going to work and back.

I’m at 5000 miles with NO GAS! It’s rad!

* I know “you bought another volt when your first one lemon’d?!” Yeah totally. It was an awesome car and between GM and California’s lemon law I pretty much sold my old one back to GM for just shy of the original purchase price.

odammit··on BMW says electric car mass production not viable until 2020
To be crass, fuck their dealer network - and all car dealer networks. What an ass backwards way to do business in this day and age. That model needs to be disrupt at least - die in a fire preferably.
odammit··on BMW says electric car mass production not viable until 2020
Sure, I’ve owned multiple Volts, and I’ll keep buying them because they’re affordable (until a “luxury” car is mostly* electric).

I’d love to have a BMW. I’m finally in the bracket I can afford it, but I refuse to own a non-electric vehicle.

People want electric vehicles and they want luxury, but Tesla’s are out of the price range for most people (for now).

BMW can wait til 2020, but by then they’ll have missed the boat.

* by mostly I mean a daily commute round trip

odammit··on Elixir Deployment Tools Update – February 2018
Conform and distillery have been the saving grace of deploying reproducible builds.

The disjointedness of how configuration worked between dev and prod though bugged me to the point that I try to only use libraries that don’t solely rely on config.exs for config and take configuration as an argument. I generally write functions around their functions to pull from ENV variables.

It’s a bit of ceremony but it feels better.

There are still a lot of libraries that pull configuration “magically” from Application in the middle of a function and don’t expose a way other than config.exs to change them though. This makes me sad.

Edit: I forgot to say thanks for all the awesome work bitwalker!

odammit··on WhatsApp co-founder tells everyone to delete Facebook
I only originally signed up because I was single and dating and girls found it “creepy” I didnt have a Facebook.

Peer pressure, man.

odammit··on WhatsApp co-founder tells everyone to delete Facebook
Will deleting Facebook actually remove your data though?

I’ve deleted mine a few times and then inevitably have had to use OAuth for some random site I’d auth’d to and lo-and-behold it works and all my data is back. Last time I went through that flow was maybe a year ago.

I always assumed they did some sort of paranoid delete or “anonymized” the data.

Excited to see repl.it on the list. Congrats!
odammit··on Blocklist Facebook domains
Man, that person put in some effort. That’s a lot of good lists.

Scrolling through them it’s really interesting to see the other sites companies own.

I always forget WhatsApp is Facebook.

That made me laugh out a boogie.
odammit··on Texas Woman with Cerebral Palsy: Uber Denied Her Service Over Two Dozen Times
Of course. But that driver could have a disability - their allergy if it’s severe.

Maybe it shouldn’t be a toggle, maybe it’s a part of both the driver and users profile so a driver can’t descriminate and instead it’s more of a matching algorithm.

odammit··on Texas Woman with Cerebral Palsy: Uber Denied Her Service Over Two Dozen Times
When booking a ride, Uber needs three toggles:

- Do you a service dog

- Do you want AC

- Do you want to talk to the driver

Edit: I can’t format.

odammit··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
Wow.

If deaths are broken out by pedestrian vs passenger, I wonder how people will respond if safety skews heavily towards one of those groups with self driving cars.

odammit··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
Curious how the numbers work out of number of miles [1] to number of deaths of autonomous vs standard vehicles.

I know the scale is different but since this is the first death I’m curious if the percents fall in line.

[1] is distance the right metric?

Ha. I didn’t realize I did that. She’s cool ;)
odammit··on Senate Bill Would Make Credit Freezes Free
After the leak last year I’ve spent a few hundred bucks freezing my wife and my credit.

While the cost is annoying, the process is even more annoying.

The entire idea/industry needs to be changed. It’s absurd all Americans are opted into this system.

How is credit reporting handled in other countries?

Edit: my wife’s credit. ;)

odammit··on Images of Los Angeles when it was covered in wetlands
Do you know what all of that piping and industrial looking stuff is east of Playa on Culver?
odammit··on Images of Los Angeles when it was covered in wetlands
I lived in Playa del Rey for years just a few blocks from the house on the hill in the 4th pic.

A few of the local coffee shops and restaurants have some of these old photos and I always found it amazing that you could still see the resemblance despite all the development.

The building being built along the road in the 4th pic is a karate school now. The lagoon is a few ugly condos, a baseball field and mostly mud now.
