ocodia··on Ozzy Osbourne has died
I’m a child of the early 80s and I consider myself fortunate to see the “original” Black Sabbath lineup at Ozzfest in Milton Keynes (2001). I was convinced I was witnessing his last gig not just because of his age but due to him tipping buckets of ice water over himself and the various electrical equipment on stage. What a gig though. What a showman. I’m surprised he lasted this long to be honest.

RIP prince of darkness, you mad, mad bastard.

ocodia··on A love letter to Apache Echarts
I’ve used Vis JS Timeline for this recently: https://visjs.github.io/vis-timeline/examples/timeline/
ocodia··on UK: Food inflation rises to 18.2% as it hits highest rate in over 45 years
We have Costco in the UK.
ocodia··on Switch to OpenStreetMap
I wish you could just download a big bunch of pre-rendered tiles for each country.
ocodia··on Bike crash left Spokane man unconscious, so his Apple Watch called 911
What did it say? Was it using Siri’s voice?
ocodia··on How Stoicism can help us
That was an interesting read. Thanks for sharing it!
ocodia··on Future sailors: what will ships look like in 30 years?
“Digital stowaway!”
ocodia··on When your manager isn't supporting you, develop a manager crew
This is overly simplifying the issue. I work for an org that requires exactly this type of 'build your own manager' idea that is mentioned in the article. Sure, it's dysfunctional and has a lot of legacy problems (like most large public sector orgs), but the work is what compells me... irrespective of how good/bad my manager is.

Basically: In some cases where you work and what you are working on trumps who you are working for and how much you are paid.

ocodia··on Facebook's Adam Mosseri on Why You'll See Less Video, More from Friends
"...because it's harder to sell random reach to advertisers. Remember that you're not Facebook's customer, so this is a move to keep eyeballs from leaving."

Exactly.

ocodia··on Ciao, Chrome: Firefox Quantum Is the Browser Built for 2017
Plenty of great email, contacts and calendar services out there, you just need to pay for them. I went with FastMail and it’s been absolutely painless.
ocodia··on Firefox Quantum
I've recently switched from Chrome to Firefox Developer Edition and apart from a few UI niggles, I'm really happy with it and I can't wait to start recommending Firefox to people again.

Congrats to Mozilla and the folks who contributed to this! The web needs Firefox and this is a massive improvement.

ocodia··on AIM will shut down after 20 years
I guess this explains why AIM was removed from Messages app in Mac OS High Sierra.
ocodia··on There they go again, again [pdf]
Heh. I was thinking exactly that same thing. RIP Mr Nice!
ocodia··on Every shot Kobe Bryant ever took
How was he able to make shots from behind the basket?
ocodia··on Show HN: Check My Links – a Chrome extension that highlights broken links
The extension does HEAD requests by default, and occasionally you don't get accurate responses back from the server. You can change the request type to GET requests in the options screen (right click on extension icon -> options) to get more accurate (but slightly slower) results.
ocodia··on Show HN: Check My Links – a Chrome extension that highlights broken links
Yep, as it essentially visits all links on a page to check their availability.

However, you can add rel="nofollow" to links you don't want to check. You can also exclude entire domains and specific links by right-clicking on the extension icon and clicking on 'options'.
