oceanhaiyang··on Are a few people ruining the internet for the rest of us?
I mostly agree! I was surprised when I was downvoted once here. Didn’t even know that was a thing
oceanhaiyang··on Are a few people ruining the internet for the rest of us?
Getting downvoted constantly on Reddit for asking or answering technical questions in my field just made me not want to use it.
oceanhaiyang··on Chinese postpartum confinement, called 'zuo yue zi,' is gaining Western appeal
I think it’s lack of postpartum care and individualism restricting what family members are willing to do for one another. As someone between both world I think there ought to be a mix between individualism and filial piety.
oceanhaiyang··on Chinese postpartum confinement, called 'zuo yue zi,' is gaining Western appeal
As someone with a lot of Chinese family and children it can be as expensive or as cheap as possible. The expensive end includes a live in helper who does everything including cook and take care of baby when mama isn’t breast feeding them.

I wish I could have afforded this because American families do not help enough. Chinese side spoils our child and is, American side not so much…

oceanhaiyang··on Chinese postpartum confinement, called 'zuo yue zi,' is gaining Western appeal
It’s not called zuo yuezi it’s just yuezi, or a month of confinement postpartum. Zuo just means to do.
oceanhaiyang··on The underground cathedral protecting Tokyo from floods (2018)
And you gotta speak decent Japanese or have someone with you who does in case of emergency!

Those pictures look unreal!

Code?
oceanhaiyang··on Are a few people ruining the internet for the rest of us?
I tried smaller internet for discussion like lemmy and mastodon, it’s either boring or equally as toxic. Makes me think we’ve been conditioned to expect a ton of content and get upset easily. Both can be true. Blogs has been more interesting as often seen here.
oceanhaiyang··on Ask HN: To what extend have you stopped or limited your use of AI?
I stopped using ChatGPT because even though it’s faster I find its answers and ability to do tasks very unreliable. For instance I had a series of references I wanted it to quickly MLA format. It deleted 10/100 then made up 10 real sounding ones. If it can’t help with formatting then I can’t trust it with bigger tasks.

I use DeepSeek both locally and online more frequently and find it more trustworthy but it still frequently makes things up. Maybe because it’s Chinese I’ve found it better at translation and somewhat more nuanced.

oceanhaiyang··on Ask HN: How can I invest in Solar Power?
Last I invested in a clean energy ETF prior to covid and luckily sold it. For non-covid related reasons it completely lost 90% of its value. Therefore I think it’s risky.
oceanhaiyang··on Tell HN: uBlock Origin on Chrome is finally gone
If I’m not mistaken they own an advertisement company which they use the data for.
oceanhaiyang··on Tell HN: uBlock Origin on Chrome is finally gone
It’s just secured Firefox. I use it and like it

What does the binaries not being signed mean?

It seems waterfox (?) has a legal entity behind it for your exact reason!

oceanhaiyang··on Ask HN: What do you do to kill time that isn't social media?
I also find it a good alternative to Reddit as it more likely more interesting unless it’s outside of my field completely
oceanhaiyang··on Ask HN: What do you do to kill time that isn't social media?
Even harder at the doctors office or on the toilet
oceanhaiyang··on HN Slop: AI startup ideas generated from Hacker News
I like how I submit a request and it never loads.
oceanhaiyang··on Lieferando.de has captured 5.7% of restaurant related domain names
Huh? Why would that be harmful at all??
oceanhaiyang··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Ublock origin allows you to block any part of a page. Solved!
oceanhaiyang··on Chongqing, the Largest City – In Pictures
> Show me a place that looks like that where no-one goes hungry, has to worry about medical bills and doesn’t live in fear of the rich and powerful and then I’ll be impressed.

I think you’re still speaking about Chongqing. China builds these and closes the wage gap.

oceanhaiyang··on Open source and self hostable/private file converter
Wow, the FBI has some great tips to protect yourself from scams including:

oceanhaiyang··on The average college student today
If you’re saying humanities don’t matter because you can’t learn them on YouTube or via ai slop then that’s a very sad point of view.
oceanhaiyang··on The average college student today
My experience with Chinese universities is they work so hard to pass the gaokao to get in then relax through university. This is common throughout all of east Asia. Maybe at top universities it’s different.
oceanhaiyang··on The average college student today
> If the purpose is to learn, you can do it better with YouTube and AI.

I’d argue that is true for STEM but not for humanities.

oceanhaiyang··on The average college student today
This is a really good take. My mother did this until high school and some of my favorite classes forced this. Lectures were so much more engaging with no computer distracting me.
oceanhaiyang··on The average college student today
As someone who teaches in humanities many students are really bad at reading and writing, use ai way too much and it hurts them, and rarely pay attention in class.

I’ve sat in other classes which were indeed boring but I don’t think this is the common denominator. Undergrads are just high schoolers with a different title.

The students from our schools foreign branch that come here for a semester or so are leagues beyond local students.

oceanhaiyang··on Typed Japanese
I think what they mean is can you form sentences that are not textbook and still make sense. In that case as long as you understand the particles and grammar you can make highly backwards sentences still work.
oceanhaiyang··on New College fires Chinese professor under controversial Florida law
It’s sad that they fired him for simply being Chinese but I don’t see how this is an issue of academic freedom. He wasn’t teaching anything deep or challenging to the state as a Chinese language teacher. This is a case of racism in academia, which is still shocking.

Most surprising part of the article is that Wang was surprised that he got in trouble for publicly criticizing Xi and the Chinese government causing him to lose his teaching job. Having worked in both Chinese and US universities that is just a dumb move on his part. What was he expecting? I also don’t understand how not being able to teach anymore equals having to flee to America to become a lowly language adjunct? Did he just criticize the government once or did he think he could become the only legal activist in China? Point being, he doesn’t seem the brightest.

oceanhaiyang··on Ask HN: What is the most secure way of baby monitoring?
I have a Linux server running Frigate, but Agentdvr is also great, with my local IP cams connected. I bought four amcrest cams for 50$ a piece. I blocked them from leaving my home network via adguard. I have them running via wifi but via their Ethernet port would be even safer. Wife approves!

I’ve found frigate to be faster than Agentdvr but Agentdvr has more features.
