occamrazor··on Stop using low DNS TTLs (2019)
Aren’t routing tables also cached (not by clients, but by ISPs)? What is their typical TTL?
occamrazor··on Graduate students question career options
All true, but in Europe you need a 5-year degree to start a PhD.
occamrazor··on How the clipboard works
The Excel clipboard has a more complex model:

- If the copied data is pasted in the same Excel instance, then the system clipboard isn’t used at all and native Excel objects are pasted.

- If data is pasted in an OLE-enabled application (e.g. Word or PowerPoint), then an OLE-specific method is used.

- If the data is pasted into another Excel instance or into another application, then the system clipboard is used, but without the possibility to transfer native Excel objects, only csv, RTF, html, text, image, or an ancient spreadsheet-like format called SYLK.

occamrazor··on Gödel’s first incompleteness theorem – an interactive tutorial
It says something more than that. There are necessarily infinitely many programs like that.
occamrazor··on One trick Apple uses to make you think green bubbles are “gross”
On my iPhone the green bubbles are much more saturated and legible than in the posted article.
occamrazor··on I have come to bury the BIOS, not to open it [video]
I may be completely wrong, but I remember reading that Apple M1/M2 computers use a similar approach, with a minimal firmware in the boot image and the rest loaded with the OS.
occamrazor··on Guido was right, there should be no lambda in Python (2018)
Python has black, also not configurable.
occamrazor··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
230 x 16 = 3680 and 1270 + 2400 = 3670. Living on the edge.
occamrazor··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
In Italy it is very common. The wiring is normally rated for more (4.5kW) The power is limited at the counter switch.

> 3kW is typical kitchen power

Most stoves used to be gas powered. Now induction is becoming more common (but it requires an upgrade to 4.5kW).

occamrazor··on LibreRPi – open source replacements for RPi firmware
There are other examples that are much worse for French learners! In _fils_ (son) the _l_ is mute, but the _s_ is pronounced. In _août_ (August), tha _a_ is mute. In _tous_ (all, plural) the _s_ can be mute or not, depending on the sentence. And in _oeuf_ (egg) the f is pronounced, but in the plural _oeufs_ it isn't! A special mention to _Monsieur_ (Mister), which is pronounced as if it was written _Messieur_.
occamrazor··on Pay attention to deviations from mainstream incentives
The OP also explains (partly here and partly in a previous post, linked in the story) how this is not a good strategy for most other restaurants which do not have a wide range of locations, from fast food to fine dining.
occamrazor··on Intel says one of its 13th Gen CPUs will hit 6GHz out of the box
Maximum available power for standard domestic users is still only 3kW in many places. Might not be enough for a gaming PC, washing machine and microwave!
occamrazor··on Falsehoods programmers believe about email
Conversely, the address joe@example.com. (with a trailing dot) is valid, but probably breaks countless programs.
occamrazor··on Apple surpassed $3.5B in annual revenue from its ad network
And a real estate company, and a hedge fund, and a bank, and (this is more recent) a data center company.

Big companies have the scale to efficiently internalize activities that smaller companies have to outsource. As time passes, they try to turn these internal service companies into profit centers.

occamrazor··on Venetians fear ‘museum relic’ status as population drops below 50k
The rest of the city is called Mestre. It’s a separate town on the mainland, which belongs to the sane administrative “city”. Nobody considers them as _the same_ city.
occamrazor··on Having, a less understood SQL clause
I didn’t know one could still refer to the value before aggregation after it is aliased.

Is there an implicit group by in this query?

occamrazor··on Having, a less understood SQL clause
What I never understood is why HAVING and WHERE are different clauses. AFAIU, there are no cases where both could be used, so why can’t one simply use WHERE after a GROUP BY?

(I know that I am probably missing some important technical points, I would like to learn about them)

occamrazor··on Excel never dies (2021)
Can you expand on that? My view of VBAis that it is a dated, but pretty much standard procedural language.
occamrazor··on Excel never dies (2021)
I don’t know about GSheets, but Excel has dynamic arrays (of variable lengths) since at least two years ago. Or a couple of lines of VBA can accomplish the same.
occamrazor··on [Fedora-legal-list] Change in classification of CC0
Other comments provide links to licenses similar to what you are looking for. But I’d like to argue that the MIT/BSD2 licenses are _better_ than a “no strings attached“ license, even when one wants to give the broadest permissions to use and modify a piece of code. The obligation to preserve attribution and license is as unobtrusive as possible, and at the same time gives assurance that the code is actually properly licensed. The typical corporate entity will not trust a piece of code with no license and would have to track copyright and license in some database. Having the same information in the source files makes things easier.
occamrazor··on GoodbyeDPI: Deep Packet Inspection circumvention utility
Haven’t you just replaced trust in your ISP with trust in the hosting provider of your VPN?

(Depending on yourISP and provider this can be a good trade-off)

occamrazor··on ML is not that good at predicting consumers' choices
I have occasionally seen people wearing far too many clothes to make the luggage smaller/lighter.
occamrazor··on Notation as a Tool of Thought (1979)
Mathematicians use very terse notation in formulas, but accompanied by a lot of natural language text. The equivalent in programming would be terse code with long comments and documentation.

Many programmers instead see self-documenting code as the ideal outcome: maybe not very compact, but virtually free of comments (and with documentation at least partially autogenerated).

In reality, successful open-source projects tend to have many comments in the source code. Often not one-liners, but detailed descriptions of functions, their arguments and algorithms, motivation for the choice of the implementation and so on.

occamrazor··on Film grain synthesis in AV1 (2019)
The biggest problem with that idea is that it wouldn’t be possible to have hw decoders as efficient as the current ones.

But there is definitely a trend towards more customizable decoders, with a larger set of primitive operations (DCT, motion estimation/compensation, convolution filters) and parameters. The codec space is slowly moving towards a model where the decoders are VM highly optimized for specific tasks.

occamrazor··on Six programming languages I’d like to see
RMS never played nice on interoperability. I wouldn’t bet on the CDL to become a useful standard, because it is under-powered, under-specified and stagnant.

The “open” alternative is OASIS. Their Open Exposure Data standard [1] is complete and supported by many industry participants. Unfortunately it’s a database based format, rather than a text based DSL, but still betterthan the alternatives.

occamrazor··on Functional programming is finally going mainstream
They are usually not hidden, so they are at least easier to identify.
occamrazor··on C#: IEnumerable, yield return, and lazy evaluation
I see, but in this case the multiplication is “b * b”, which has type “^c * ^c”.
occamrazor··on Gnome has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked (2021)
I should have explained myself better. The old way of specifying a position (pixel coords in a plane) does not work well for complicated setups. Among the possible alternatives there is:

1. Assign responsibility to the wm (Wayland’s way)

2. Create a new way to specify position preference in a complicated world. That’s what you propose, IIUC. It’s possible but complicated, and Wayland had a lot of other problems to worry about, therefore I understand why they didn’t choose this way.

3.Leave the simple protocol in place, but let the wm override the application’s choice when necessary. I guess a lot of apps would not work properly in such a system.

occamrazor··on Gnome has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked (2021)
With multiple monitors, and multiple multi-monito configurations, window position becomes a complicated concept, full of pitfalls and corner cases. It is reasonable (although admittedly not the only possibility solution) to centralize the window position management in the wm.
occamrazor··on C#: IEnumerable, yield return, and lazy evaluation
Shouldn’t the type constraint on multiplication be existence of an operator:

    (*) : ^c * ^c -> ^b ?
