obituary_latte··on Super-precise new CRISPR tool could tackle a plethora of genetic diseases
Sorry but I don’t understand how your point differs? I think the gist was that it’s weaponized for a certain group and then evolves to target a much wider group. Isn’t that the same thing as you mentioned?
obituary_latte··on Linus Torvalds: Git proved I could be more than a one-hit wonder
Yup MacOS ships with python. I didn’t try a python server since the ruby webrick server worked fine I just found it curious Apache didn’t work since it also ships in the OS.
obituary_latte··on Linus Torvalds: Git proved I could be more than a one-hit wonder
TIL! Thanks! Interesting, though, that it doesn't appear to work with MacOS built-in apache (webrick works fine though).
obituary_latte··on Recent advances in 3D content understanding
Not sure if this qualifies, but an interesting development which was new to me not so long ago was discovering the iPhone X has the ability to measure things with the camera. I.e. the measure app allows you to designate a point in the scene, draw a line and add another point and it will measure the distance. Also has nice snapping features and the ability to take a pic of the scene with the measurements superimposed on top.
obituary_latte··on Perfectly Cropped
Just tried it and it looks like you can long-press then swipe down to dismiss.

Title should probably mention this was in 1964 unless I’m misreading the article.

It looks like he’s looking for some help getting something set up for donations for his wife. Doesn’t look like he’s getting much actionable advice there. Maybe someone here can help?

obituary_latte··on Flash Is Responsible for the Internet's Most Creative Era
Glad to see Joshua Davis (Praystation) in there. Now known as https://joshuadavis.com/ he was way ahead of the times IMO.
obituary_latte··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
Surely there’s a way to check if a field has some kind of programatic interaction like typeahead. Maybe check for that before taking over with autofill? I don’t know - maybe that would break spec or something - I’m not a browser developer. I just know the pain of autocomplete=“off” not working as expected.
obituary_latte··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
I feel your pain - sorry you have to deal with it. I’m working on a client data management app and I’m having issues everywhere with this. It’s been an open ticket on Jira for months!
obituary_latte··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
Yup. Very frustrating as a dev. I don’t really get how they rationalize it either - having their autofill appear over and obstruct a developers autocomplete functionality is not user friendly!

> Conceptual encoding contributes to the construction of conceptual representations in the mind of the addressee, whilst procedural encoding provides the addressee with instructions as to how conceptual representations are to be manipulated to achieve relevance.

To me it reads as a lack of ability to conceptualize, for instance, others‘ state of mind.

obituary_latte··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
I think it mentioned chrome is even now ignoring ‘display:none’ and ‘visibility:hidden’ declarations so those workarounds no longer work either.
obituary_latte··on Issue 914451: Autofill does not respect autocomplete="off"
Well they are ignoring hundreds if not thousands of developers which is the main issue at this point.

obituary_latte··on Pair Locking Your iPhone
I don’t think they said “more free than UK citizens”. Although, to be fair, US doesn’t have quite as intrusive CCTV. And I thought gun laws were pretty restrictive in UK? But “most ways” is probably a reach, and there are certainly things UK does do much better.

Edit: would appreciate feedback if my comment is not constructive or could be improved in some way.

obituary_latte··on 'We good now China?' South Park creators issue mock apology
I wonder if they were aware of the controversial nature of the episode. I’d bet really money, though, Viacom et. al. wouldn’t hesitate for a second to censor South Park if it starts hurting their bottom line.
obituary_latte··on This To That
Site appears to be down. Can anyone give an overview?
obituary_latte··on Africa Is Building an A.I. Industry That Doesn’t Look Like Silicon Valley
I wonder if there is a way browsers could preemptively “compress“ (I doubt that’s the correct terminology) prior to downloading? Like somehow grab every nth bit, combine, render and then allow for further requests to refine at user discretion. Wonder if anyone has ever tried something like that.
obituary_latte··on Cross the world four times
I can’t say for certain, but I don’t think that is the case. However, the author did have the benefit of making $4MM off of his company before selling it for $22MM in his late thirties. I didn’t get the sense, though, from a brief perusal of his site that he’s remarkably pretentious or looks down on those less well-traveled.
obituary_latte··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
Here’s an example: https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/ssh/how-to-u... But just search googs for “port knocking” and you’ll find a ton of info.
obituary_latte··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
How would that work? How could I set up, for instance, my iPhone to port knock to allow port 53 access to the server from an unknown remote ip?

Edit: found this guide https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/website/ssh/how-to-u...

Looks like I could just create some bookmarks for the ports and open them sequentially.

I think overall this is a much better solution than messing with php/bash - good idea and thanks!

obituary_latte··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
Because it’s available everywhere e.g. work/family/friends etc. and I can share it with family/friends as well. It’s a lot of fun to see people’s reactions when they see what the net can be like without all of the ads.
obituary_latte··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
Unfortunately it doesn’t at this point I don’t believe. But as another comment mentions, there is a nice api. Another option would be to create a bash script and create a php page with a form to add a domain to whitelist. I do something similar to whitelist ip’s for dns in iptables. Pi admin uses php so it’s already installed and working.
obituary_latte··on Pi-Hole 4.3.2
I have run pi-hole on the cheapest tier of Rackspace cloud server for 2+years now with great success. It’s wonderful. Just configure my routers dhcp to set my pi ip for dns and no ads anywhere (YouTube, streaming [except Hulu unfortunately], and general browsing). It’s especially nice now that it seems every company is offering their own streaming apps with ads. Recent example was I wanted to watch an action sports video and firetv had it with the redbull app. Ten or so minutes in and the video was interrupted with “here’s some ads” stinger and then the video immediately resumed. Kinda caught me off guard but produced an instant smile.

One thing to consider though is becoming a dns resolver for any random thing on the net. What I did for this was create a bash script that adds the visiting ip to iptables whitelist. Created an impossible-to-guess php page (pi admin uses php so it’s already installed and ready to go) which takes the REMOTE_ADDR and passes it to the bash script to add to iptables. Makes it super easy to allow ip’s when isp changes address or when visiting family/friends and they want to use it.

obituary_latte··on Adblock Radio: An adblocker for live radio streams and podcasts
Why would anyone have to defend blocking ads? It’s a personal choice that doesn’t negatively impact anyone. You could argue that if enough people did it, it could effect the potential advertising revenue, but if that were the case then the end result is not that “people are bad for blocking ads” but rather that the current state of advertising is incompatible with user needs and desires.
obituary_latte··on An interactive cheatsheet tool for the command-line
Sorry but I do not.
obituary_latte··on An interactive cheatsheet tool for the command-line
Looks neat. I wish, though, there was a way to try it out in the browser as advertised without having to sign up or login. Might be a requirement of the site hosting the demo but whoever it is, forcing login is always and forever a deal breaker for me.
obituary_latte··on Against Against Pseudoaddiction
Agreed. I think the war on drugs and especially more recently the war on opiates is a travesty. I sometimes wonder if the amount of suffering caused by the lack of access to proper treatment due to the fear among doctors of legal issues for prescribing is comparable to the suffering on the other end of the spectrum.
