oafitupa··on Safety, liveness and fault tolerance—the consensus choices
I agree that Stellar is "obviously inferior".

If you want a centralized system, just use your bank, Paypal or whatever. Nobody was claiming that Bitcoin, a distributed system, was more efficient computing than other systems. The whole point of Bitcoin is that nobody controls it. Finding something that is more efficient than Bitcoin, without the decentralization, is plain stupid. I don't need an "expert" telling me that "hurr I could have done that faster with a SQL database".

oafitupa··on Reddit Plans Cryptocurrency to Give Back to Its Users After $50M Raise
Because it's stupid? Why peg millions of dollars to a currency with no security?
oafitupa··on Reddit Plans Cryptocurrency to Give Back to Its Users After $50M Raise
So you just copy/pasted Counterparty's code too? Do you have any plans on providing something of value, or only copycats?
oafitupa··on Reddit Plans Cryptocurrency to Give Back to Its Users After $50M Raise
Seems like you don't know what Counterparty is.
oafitupa··on Reddit Plans Cryptocurrency to Give Back to Its Users After $50M Raise
Why are you trying to spread that falsehood? How is dogecoin "already the cryptocurrency of Reddit"? It wasn't created by Reddit, no one in Reddit is using it (except r/dogecoin and related subs), and it's supposed to be a joke. I don't think Reddit wants its shares to be a joke too.
oafitupa··on Reddit Plans Cryptocurrency to Give Back to Its Users After $50M Raise
Stellar? What kind of joke is this? Why go with some small, centralized currency created by a private company (and owned by it to some degree), instead of going with the most adopted, most secure, most serious of all, and decentralized: Bitcoin.
oafitupa··on Brain 'can classify words during sleep'
Yep, I solved several Math and Physics problems for school (I used to get into competitions), understood a martials arts technique (it was taught to us but nobody could make it work. In my dream I fought someone but I saw everything upside down, and there I figured the technique was very similar to other one we already knew, but upside down), and solved many programming problems I had when I started learning that.

I also feel like my naps defragment my brain even when I'm not 100% unconscious. I go through things that happened that morning or the day before and kind of classify everything. Sometimes I understand how the people I interacted with felt. Things that in the moment they occurred I couldn't appreciate. Like when you consciously try to think things from the other person's perspective, but dreaming sometimes forces me to do that.

oafitupa··on A girl with three biological parents
Not necessarily; it could be, but it certainly wouldn't happen quickly. Here you have several possibilities explained by Dawkins:

oafitupa··on Minting Money with Monero and CPU Vector Intrinsics
Bytecoin falls in the scam, yes. But the Monero community fixed this quite fast.
oafitupa··on The Role of Trust in the Stellar Network
Yes, yes, they now admit it because they got caught. That doesn't change the way they presented it when it was launched.
oafitupa··on The Role of Trust in the Stellar Network
> Stellar is a brand new decentralized protocol

Nope, it's just a clone of Ripple by the same author. He just dumped all his XRP, rebranded the whole thing, and started a new pump and dump scheme. He tried really hard to remove all the Ripple references from the code, but the whole concept looked so similar (nothing interesting, just another premined, centralized in practice service) that people caught him in no time.

oafitupa··on The legend of John von Neumann (1973)
More than once I was studying something in completely unrelated fields (eg: quantum mechanics, biology, game theory), when suddenly von Neumann (who I first knew for his contributions to computer science) is mentioned and I'm like "What? This guy again?". After the third time I went to read his biography because it couldn't be the same person. But yeah, it was.

Can't you do the same without programming it though? I don't think I could have fun playing a game I programmed for someone else.

Can you answer the question?
oafitupa··on NSA's BIOS Backdoor a.k.a. God Mode Malware
Engineers have to work with what they have.

Do you disagree that he made the right decision?

Is there solid evidence that these countries are engaging in the same stuff as the NSA?

oafitupa··on An Unreal Decision
Wow, that's horrible. So what do you recommend?
oafitupa··on Email Is Still the Best Thing on the Internet
Bitcoin is better IMO.

But I agree that email is a great thing. I hope someone creates a sick email client that turns back the flow from Facebook to the email. I'm fine with Thunderbird + Enigmail, but I don't see the average person using it any time soon (or ever if unchanged).

oafitupa··on Hacker Redirects Traffic From 19 Internet Providers to Steal Bitcoins
That's not a problem, it's a feature. It's like saying "the problem with gold is that you can't recover it". But that's precisely what gold holders want: Not letting the government "recover" it (ie. seize/steal it).
oafitupa··on Hacker Redirects Traffic From 19 Internet Providers to Steal Bitcoins
Bitcoin is targeted because it's a digital asset, true digital cash. Banks don't have that. You can never really own your bank money in digital form, it always stays in the bank's computers.
oafitupa··on Hacker Redirects Traffic From 19 Internet Providers to Steal Bitcoins
Sounds like a problem with computers, not Bitcoin.
oafitupa··on Transducers are coming to Clojure
I don't think that 5-line function will be understandable by the next programmer who has to deal with it though. That's my point. It probably involves a Fibonacci or other math trickery that not everyone might have fresh in their minds.
oafitupa··on Transducers are coming to Clojure
> Would you rather learn to write and read maintain a handful of classes

I appreciate your answer, but that's not what I do with libraries. I don't have to read their internals, let alone write them.

oafitupa··on Transducers are coming to Clojure
As someone who tried Clojure and failed, serious question: Does anyone actually use all these crazy features/patterns that keep getting added/discovered and talked about?

I ask because even though I can imagine someone smart mastering these things and programming faster, I can't imagine a second person being able to understand his code, maintain it, and generally be productive. I imagine the second person losing a lot of time trying to understand what is going on, or even thinking he understood but in reality he didn't and messing things up.

So how do you even form a Clojure team?

oafitupa··on Ask HN: How do you get paid for remote freelance work?
I see, you had to complete the sterotype as a Bitcoin hater so you added that you want to short soooo badly but you only don't do it because it's not possible yet. Which of course, like everything else you said, is wrong ;)

> but as that is presently impossible and a wee bit against my intuitive sense of justice

Let me guess. Your "intuitive sense of justice" is also where your hate for Bitcoin comes from? You hate that people were smarter than you when they decided to buy and you decided to stay in your comfort zone?

By the way no one here said anything about being rich or Bitcoin reaching 100k or "the moon", so I guess I'll just ignore 3/4 of your comment because it's just a huge chain of straw men.

oafitupa··on Ask HN: How do you get paid for remote freelance work?
How do you explain the amount of time you dedicate to investigate and attack Bitcoin? Not saying that you are well informed though because most of what you've said is just wrong, but still it's pretty weird if you ask me. Especially when no one is forcing you to use it through violence, unlike other currencies (eg: the currency of whatever country you happen to live or do business in, probably USD).
oafitupa··on Ask HN: How do you get paid for remote freelance work?
Bitcoin.
oafitupa··on Emacs and Vim
Why would I want to use any pc in the world? That makes no sense unless your work doesn't involve security of any kind. Besides you can carry your work environment using a virtual machine too.
oafitupa··on Emacs and Vim
I asked why would you want to do it remotely, and you basically answered "I do it remotely".
oafitupa··on Stellar
No this is not Bitcoin-like. It's premined and requires trust. Besides, it's just a fork of Ripple, which has already failed after being dumped by its creator.

Oh but it has integration with Facebook, so I guess that changes everything! /s
