oafitupa··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
What's 16/8?

And how can you get up at 4:30 and also "get enough sleep"?

oafitupa··on A mysterious connection between number theory, algebra and string theory?
Math and physics look like a lot of fun. Does anyone know if the real fun only starts after like a decade of studying?

If I remember correctly, one of his answers was something like "Because it's the only Universe where we could ask such a question". I think what he means is that all the other possible universes (or most of them) might or might not exist somewhere else, but they certainly don't include intelligent life with the ability to ask "Why is there something instead of nothing?". When you ask that question you are assuming this is the only universe and it was "meant to be". But our sole existence is not evidence at all for a "destination".

"What do I do now" is a complete different question, and I guess people might find their own personal answers in the most varied places. You obviously don't need a physicist for that, although lots of them also think about these things.

oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
False. It's a store of value, that even central banks use.
oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
> He's certainly the most knowledgeable person about bitcoin.

That's false. There are several persons who are way more knowledgeable than him now (assuming he hasn't been following the developments since he disappeared).

oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
What you said makes no sense whatsoever.
oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
People don't like to work either, and yet they do it.
oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
And you would be wrong, because a scam requires a trickery and someone being fooled.
oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
A scam is a trickery by which you fool someone into giving something of value to you.

Bitcoin is open source, and what we say it is is exactly what it is, and anyone (or any programmer, but hey, this is HN) can check it, so there is no scam.

By your logic then gold and every other investment is also a scam, because you are "giving money to earlier investors".

50% of the total hashing power only gives you certain powers, and certainly not "control over Bitcoin". For instance, you can't change the protocol any more than you could without the hashing power.

The economic majority controls Bitcoin, not the miners alone. Have you even heard about nodes?

oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
See, it's not even clear where patio11 is going with his recurrent rants about Bitcoin. Looks a lot like irrational hate.
oafitupa··on The truth about the Bitcoin Foundation
What if I told you I have been using it as a store of value all these years? Seems to work too.
oafitupa··on New Hacker News Guideline: Avoid Gratuitous Negativity
But now Bitcoin haters will have nothing to say!
oafitupa··on Meteor 1.1 Released – Now Supporting Microsoft Windows and MongoDB 3.0
Yes, I have the same feeling reading these comments. I tried Meteor and it felt like the classic monolithic framework that gets in your way.
oafitupa··on Ask HN: What's the best way to invest in Bitcoin?
To get the bitcoins you need a broker, an exchange, or buy them in person. Check out Coinbase, Kraken, and Localbitcoins.

To keep your coins safe you can use Electrum. It will generate a "seed" that you need to print or write down and keep it safe. The wallet will use that seed to generate addresses you can use to receive bitcoins. If you are into Linux, you can use a Tails DVD to generate the seed in a clean environment, which is safer. I think the last version added Electrum so you won't need to install anything extra.

Another option is to use multi-signature online wallets like Coinkite (I think Coinbase offers multi-signature too now).

oafitupa··on Bitcoin is not for goverment. Bitcoin is digital currency of the internet
You don't have any evidence about that. And like I said, he expressed all kinds of libertarian ideas, so chances are he is.
oafitupa··on Bitcoin is not for goverment. Bitcoin is digital currency of the internet
Of course it could, but it would be stupid. Why bother with mining, if they don't want anyone else to be able to do it? The point of mining is distributed consensus. You don't need a crazy algorithm to reach consensus with yourself.
oafitupa··on Bitcoin is not for goverment. Bitcoin is digital currency of the internet
Too bad that you don't like libertarianism, because Satoshi Nakamoto (you might have heard of him) expressed all kinds of libertarian and anarcho-capitalist ideas.
oafitupa··on Bitcoin is not for goverment. Bitcoin is digital currency of the internet
The real question is why would a government use a Bitcoin clone, instead of either traditional fiat or just Bitcoin.
oafitupa··on Bitcoin is not for goverment. Bitcoin is digital currency of the internet
In many countries it's forbidden. Eg: Argentina, Venezuela, etc. The government doesn't like it when their people find ways of escaping inflation.
oafitupa··on Bitcoin is not for goverment. Bitcoin is digital currency of the internet
Except they would have to also create their own mining industry to secure it, or enemy countries could easily attack it.

You can't print gold either, but that's precisely why even central banks use it as a store of value.
oafitupa··on Lightning Network: “Bitcoin Doesn’t Scale” [pdf]
While I appreciate the criticism, I wonder why Bitcoin detractors' main argument is always "it will never go mainstream", while by their definition of "mainstream" (ie. "the average person"), gold isn't mainstream either, and yet it's such a great store of value that even central banks use it.
oafitupa··on Lightning Network: “Bitcoin Doesn’t Scale” [pdf]
Wrong. There are degrees of centralization. Hundreds or thousands of entities holding the blockchain is certainly not centralized. We don't need every single participant to hold the blockchain.
oafitupa··on Lightning Network: “Bitcoin Doesn’t Scale” [pdf]
General people don't care about gold either, and yet it's such a great store of value that even central banks use it.
oafitupa··on Astronomers find an ancient black hole the size of 12B suns
We already knew about several black holes more massive than that though (the news seems to be about how ancient it is too, not just its mass):

oafitupa··on BitcoinEmissions – A project to calculate CO2 emissions of mining bitcoin
I don't see you complaining about these:

oafitupa··on BitcoinEmissions – A project to calculate CO2 emissions of mining bitcoin
Yeah, there are also bottle caps which can be used as currency!

But seriously, don't call those "alternatives" if they are not secure. There is no known replacement for PoW.

oafitupa··on BitcoinEmissions – A project to calculate CO2 emissions of mining bitcoin
> It's not even inflationary

And that's exactly the whole point, and is the very reason it's working.

> a pyramid scheme

Then every other successful investment is a pyramid scheme. Gold is a pyramid scheme! Storing food for catastrophes is a pyramid scheme! Paintings are a pyramid scheme!
