oaf357··on John Dvorak: “Yesterday I was fired from PC Magazine”
I didn't realize PC Mag was still around.
oaf357··on Ask HN: How would look the ideal tech interview for a DevOps/Cloud Engineer job?
I wouldn't even consider your company based on this alone.
oaf357··on Ask HN: How do you handle comments on your blog?
I don't anymore. Low quality, racism, and spam essentially led to me removing commenting altogether. I have considered creating threads on HN or Reddit for commenting but that doesn't feel right.
oaf357··on Ask HN: What's a good static site generator to use for a blog in 2018?
Hugo. And done!
oaf357··on Show HN: Buy Me A Coffee – A free, fast and friendly way to receive donations
Having had Buy Me A Coffee promeniently featured on two websites and a newsletter I never had anyone actually contribute a penny. YMMV of course but with a quarter of a million page views you'd think people would have contributed at least once.
oaf357··on Ask HN: What are the best conferences you've been to for your growth?
All Things Open
oaf357··on Ask HN: What ways have worked for you to overcome 'imposter syndrome'?
Religiously keeping my LinkedIn profile up to date, writing, and public speaking.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Mailing lists that HN readers ought to know about?
Shameless plug for DevOps'ish https://DevOpsish.com

Trying to lower the barrier to entry for all those involved in DevOps while highlighting cool ish going on in the industry.

oaf357··on With a 10-day supply of opioids, 1 in 5 become long-term users
The problem with the backlash against opiod use in the US is that people who actually have to have the drugs are finding it increasingly harder to get.

As a disabled veteran with nerve damage I am rationing pain medication daily. I cannot afford to have a manageable pain day due to the fact I might have a week of excruciating pain.

As you may or may not know, little can be done for functional nerve damage. Some experimental procedures are available but in general, only the symptoms can be treated. For me this means a lot of different muscle relaxers and an opiod for when things are beyond control.

But, the opioids have become increasingly more difficult to get prescribed because of recent DEA rule changes and legislation affecting these medications.

This basically means, for me at least, I will take my own life at some point as the pain will be too unbearable and I won't be able to acquire the medications necessary to control it.

oaf357··on Ask HN: Who is switching away from MacBooks this year?
I just bought a new non-touchbar 15" MBP.
oaf357··on Researchers are beginning to disentangle pain relief from addiction and overdose
As someone with irreparable nerve damage (and has to ration pain meds as a result) this is incredible news!
oaf357··on Grubhub CEO's email to employees
After having spent 20+ years in IT (11 of which was in government) I find it very disturbing when someone says fall in line or get out. No one likes to hide who they really are.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2016)
I don't see any remote positions.
oaf357··on Lineinfile be damned
This is a valid concern. Thanks for pointing it out. I will update the article.
oaf357··on HoloLens secret sauce: A 28nm customized 24-core DSP engine built by TSMC
Only 10W for all that? While I'm a little sceptical that is an impressive number.
oaf357··on PhpMyAdmin Project Successfully Completes Security Audit
I encourage everyone to use MySQL Workbench over SSH. For whatever reason people seem to not understand the concept of SSH and the inherent security it provides. But, once you explain to folks how to use it effectively it really is a good balance of security and usability.
oaf357··on Salary Negotiation
I have always been honest with what I'm being compensated. In six years I've nearly doubled my salary.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Moving Out of Silicon Valley because of housing? Where to?
Come to the Palo Alto of the east coast: Raleigh
oaf357··on Ask HN: What's the best welcome you've ever had when you first started your job?
I actually just started a new job and my first day was amazing. First, my boss gave me a tour of the office. Followed by showing me to my desk. On the desk was a working phone, monitors, folders, pens, paper, sticky notes, a tape dispenser, and two documents. The first document was essentially everything I needed to answer my spouse's questions about the new job (holidays, vacation accruals, pay dates, where to sign up for benefits, etc.). The second document was an org chart with everyone's name and title which was nice for reference when meeting new people. Shortly after wiping down the desk a person dedicated to getting my new laptop setup came in and made sure I had access to everything I would ever need. She literally brought everything new in box and started laying it all out for me. Next my immediate co-workers set about getting me access to systems and internal applications. By mid-afternoon on my first day I felt like I could start diving in and solving problems. It was a truly refreshing experience especially when you consider it was December 28th.
oaf357··on Daily Telegraph Installs Workplace Monitors on Journalists' Desks
I commend the idea (assuming the leadership was being honest) but you don't just install a black box on someone's desk and not explain what it is before hand.
oaf357··on Show HN: Freeciv-Earth play anywhere on earth
I would love to see how a battle for my neighborhood would go. Please enable geolocation.
oaf357··on Ask HN: Are you wearing computer glasses?
I have considered wearing glasses but couldn't justify the cost and I've never met anyone that swore by them.
oaf357··on Twitter can solve harassment right now with verified accounts
Twitter has been used to overthrow governments. I'll pass on the verified account meaning Twitter knows where I live bit. Facebook likely doesn't know my street address.
oaf357··on The simplest possible way to prevent brute-force logins
Wouldn't you want to know who/what was trying to brute force your site before just letting it try again five minutes later? If not, I guess that's fine but ultimately I would want to know how many times that login attempt threshold has been breached per account.
oaf357··on Flickr Camera Roll
I'm still pondering what I'm going to do with my massive Flickr presence that's floundering. The analytics I get are great but, I'm not sure I care anymore? The issue is I'm paying for those analytics. This might make me stick around a little longer but it's probably too little too late.
oaf357··on Ragic: the cloud's answer to Microsoft Access
It's been years since I've seen an Access database in use anywhere. I'm curious if there is a big market for a more simplistic-ish Access replacement. I guess we'll see.
oaf357··on HubPress – A web application to build your Blog on GitHub
I'm surprised there aren't more things like this out there. With GitHub, Tumblr, etc. basically allowing you to host almost whatever you want it's surprising people still pay for hosting their small, personal-ish websites.
oaf357··on Eero – Blanket your home in fast, reliable WiFi
This is intriguing but at that price point I'm not sure it's worth it without some additional detailed tech specs.
oaf357··on Gopher Gala winners announced
Congrats to all! Goffee looks rather interesting. I could think of a few interesting applications.
oaf357··on Robert Scoble to take 2 months off
And the world rejoices? I can appreciate taking a break for health. I still have no idea what he does to help RackSpace. He does know how to fill a timeline though.
