o_p··on Gravity batteries try to beat chemical ones with winches, weights, mine shafts
This doesnt account the short duration of batteries, I have to replace them every time they go past their lifetime, so in the long term their cost is much higher
o_p··on Am I Doctor Stallman?
Someone who made a contribution relevant to the field deserves far more the title than someone who made a dissertation no one reads. These silly formalities dont benefit academia
o_p··on Running code within another process's address space
But the nefarious potential its so obvious that no one with that intention would do DLL injection that way when there are other thousand of ways to get in
o_p··on Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving
By 2100 people will realize how dumb people in the 2020 were and have efficient public transportation for that "autonomous" travelling.
o_p··on Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving
>There is something called personal responsibility that most people believe in.

If you are talking about the personal responsability of Elon Musk by misleading the public into thinking his cars have anything close to a self driving car, I agree. If autopilot is not autopilot, then why name it as such?

o_p··on Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving
This is even worse than the deadly autopilot, EV cars are much more likely to burn and the fire is much hard to extinguish, but no one who tries to sell you an EV will tell you "hey you are more likely to die by being burned alive!"
o_p··on Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving
Why would someone use autopilot when Tesla is not liable for damages? Its like you hire a driver but you are liable for any crash they do.
o_p··on Google used ‘double-Irish’ to shift $75.4B in profits out of Ireland
Intent is a part of the law, not only actions. If you use an exploit in computer systems to get unauthorized access you cant just say "well, thats how its designed, write better programs next time".

Retroactive taxes should apply here, what was written in the law was wrong with the actual intent of the lawmaker, we shouldnt encourage this stupid cat and mouse games, just pay your taxes.

o_p··on Google used ‘double-Irish’ to shift $75.4B in profits out of Ireland
You or someone pay to companies with your money for the value they provide. However companies dont pay for the services goverment give them, like the security of police enforcement and the roads and public transport for their workers to come to work, or the justice system to ensure their rights are protected. In fact, without the goverment the business probably couldnt even be a ble to operate.
o_p··on Google used ‘double-Irish’ to shift $75.4B in profits out of Ireland
Companies should contribute to society, they benefit off the public and legal infrastructure.
o_p··on The brain ‘rotates’ memories to save them from new sensations
So memory and sensory get multiplexed?
o_p··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments
But there are no many surgeons here, theres only one, one central bank. The inflation rate of Turkey is 15%, is anyone really telling people to just "trust the goverment"? Would you put your life savings in the Turkish Lira?
o_p··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments
This shows how scared goverments are. And its a great way for the people to put pressure in their goverments, get your sh*t together or Im not trusting you with my money, when people deem bitcoin more stable than your local currency you know things are pretty bad.
o_p··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments
>Sure these guys are clearly corrupt but that doesnt mean you shouldnt trust them with your money!

Are you serious? Honest question.

o_p··on Turkey bans use of cryptocurrencies for payments
Poor finance guys, they have it so rough.
o_p··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
I dont know how can you sleep at night in good conscience while using the US Dollar, so glad theres BTC, energy consumption is its only sin.
o_p··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
>regardless of where we are getting our energy from So you dont care about the actual real problem which is carbon emissions?

>we should be making efforts to massively reduce consumption across the board Why? Theres no problem with the consumption of renewable energies

When you want to trample on people's freedoms just because you dont deem them "worthy" of consuming energy its no wonder that people gives you the finger.

o_p··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
BTC miners buy the energy to power their nodes and that cost is passed to the users in transaction fees.

The only legitimate criticism here may be that energy prices dont account for the externalities of carbon emissions. But thats irrelevant of how the energy is actually used

o_p··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
Its not BTC miners fault that energy is priced incorrectly. We shouldnt waste any energy into powering the armies of the world, lets just not fight, right? But here we are.
o_p··on Bitcoin miners are buying power plants
Well its the cost of a decentralized safe currency, at the end of the day its the users who pay for it, and I gladly pay for it. Keep using your fiat if you want.
o_p··on PHP in 2021
Daily reminder that by Lindy effects, for each additional year of php still alive the probability of staying alive increase. We will probably die before PHP
o_p··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
>in most states this turns kids into child porn producers a more serious crime than child porn viewer

This is even worse than the OP

o_p··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
This violates my human right to send random garbage messgages to my friends
o_p··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
Dont let your kid videochat on the internet? Maybe?
o_p··on IT companies warn in open letter: EU wants to ban encryption
Lets ban children
o_p··on Psilocybin 'promising' for depression
Maybe some mushrooms could help you with that
o_p··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
>the supposed point of crypto is to reducing the reliance on, and grifting from, companies like Coinbase.

Not necessarily, the point of crypto is to reduce reliance on fiat money, due to the high fees of crypto it makes sense to build centralized services on top backed by decentralized cryptocurrencies, these exchanges dont hold real power, as you can just switch exchanges (unlike credit card processors). Bitcoin is like the internet gold, but you dont buy stuff with gold.

o_p··on Just Be Rich
If two sub groups of a distribution get a net positive in % that necessarily means the other part went net negative in the same proportion, seems a bit too far to argue against math just to defend the rich.
o_p··on Just Be Rich
That completly misses the point, first, rich people earnings come mostly from their investments, not their work. Second, the money earned through investment necesarily comes from the work produced by other people and thats completly independent if the rich person works or not.

The person who "earns by investing and working in both nearly equal proportion" doesnt really exist beyond outliers, this is empirical, the 1% owns as much wealth as the entire middle class, this is where their yearly income comes from, they get money because they own stuff, not by being superworkers, otherwise the inequality wouldnt be growing.

o_p··on Just Be Rich
Economy is closer to a zero-sum game, after all theres limited resources in a period of time. We cannot be all rich because we cannot all own the capital, if we did, who does the work? To invest you need workers, to produce you need consumers, to rent you need renter, etc. Then the rich class exist because theres a poor class, a zero-sum game.
