o999··on The Origin of the Pork Taboo
Jews and Muslims don't eat pork because their holy books tell them they cannot eat it.

This article is really making up a fancy explaination to very simple subject, Jews and Muslims believe Torah and Quran are devine.

Alcohol consumption was widespread among Arabs and early Muslims before it was discouraged and later prohibited in Quran, you should not play clever to try to explain that differently.

o999··on El Salvador's crypto experiment ends in failure
One does not need an expert to predict a terrible failure of Bitcoin as a legal tender and for $30-worth of free BTC wallet.

But as a minority of reserve asset, Bitcoin might be a good idea, nobody bought bitcoin at any price whatsover and wasn't able to make a profit that beats US T-bonds for 4 consecutive years (please double check on this, it's not a financial advice), let only if they DCA their portfolio.

Of course such national reserve cannot make a large % of the total reserve as the risk is also high and wealth of the nation is not meant to be used in risky bets. 4 years is also not a very meaningful window for a 16 years old market.

Antitrust goal is protect competition and prevent monopolies, Safari search and Bing market shares aren't in a position of a monopoly, unlike Google's (~79% of desktop search market share)

o999··on Supreme Court rules to uphold TikTok ban, setting stage for shutdown
Liberties are not granted to everyone equaly ≠ Some liberties are [equally] denied.
o999··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
So China blocking US social media is justified for the very same reasons?
o999··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
Because US is not really a free country.

It is obviously way better on this matter than China, but in principle, liberties are selectively granted in US and in China.

The TikTok ban topic has been stale for long time before it became the main harbor for Pro-Palestine content after it became under censorship by US social media thus depriving anti-Palestine from controling the narrative, effectively becoming a major concern for AIPAC et al.

Data collection is more of a plausible pretext at this point.

Statement by UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland on Attack by Israeli Settlers in Huwwara

“I condemn today’s attack by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their property in the town of Huwara in occupied West Bank,” said UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, in a statement.

“I'm outraged by the continued incitement, provocations, and lack of accountability for these violent crimes,” he added, stressing that “Israel must ensure that the civilian population is protected, and perpetrators are held to account.”

o999··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
Not necessarily, some services would have the magic link verify the session that triggered it regardless of browser or device.

I assume it generates a session on the post-login screen and authorize that session upon accessing link

o999··on Magic/tragic email links: don't make them the only option
Most internet users (who aren't tech savvy and will never be) will find magic link || mailed OTP way easier than passkeys accross devices, etc..
o999··on Roman Empire's use of lead lowered IQ levels across Europe, study finds
> By some estimates, the Roman empire amounted to more than 80 million people at its peak, meaning that about a quarter of the world’s population could have been exposed to the lead pollution generated by mining and smelting. The effects of lead poisoning can be so severe that scholars have debated whether it contributed to the fall of the empire.

I wonder what will happen to current empires from micro- and nano-plastics, PFAS, airpolution, as well as harmful yet popular habits like doomscrolling and games addictions.

o999··on All clocks are 30 seconds late
Does OP realize that people don't looks at 11:55 and think it means 11:55:00, but they think, it is just not 11:56 yet.

Computers and smart devices syncing to NTP doesn't have 30s average error rate, it is the author who has 30s average error rate in clock-reading if he reads a digital clock and think that the clock tells that no seconds has passed since the last time it added one minute.

That is like saying that Russia is not liable for the cyber-sabotage done by hackers it harbors (and presumably funds, covertly).

Israel is notorious of dodging responsibility, like carrying assassinations abroad that are set to look like accidents, just like Russia does.

Take the assassination of Waddie Haddad and Yasser Arafat with slow poison as examples.

o999··on How to lose a fortune with one bad click
Almost all scammers use more or less the same trick, they try to trigger a fear or greed rush with their message/call, so you don't get a chance to question authenticity of what you read or hear.

That is also what many salespersons do to get you to buy what you don't need nor even want, you cannot miss this limited time discount.

Always stop for a moment and be skeptical, caller ID can be spoofed, email addresd can have ä or ē in the domain that you won't notice if you don't look carefully.

> Discourage the over-sharing of screenshots (of your application and other things). Again, not searchable. If one must be shared, describe it. For instance, many devs share a picture of a stack-trace. Not super helpful for others. Grab the text and dump it to Slack.

I was recently surprised to find it is actually searchable in slack, apparently Slack OCRs the screenshots and even photos of text and you can find screenshots in the results if the keyword can be found in them.

Wouldn't consumer like it if they could use Google services on any browser with the same experience without having to give up other browsers?
