nym··on Ask HN: Is Tik-Tok Malware?
Yes.
nym··on Microship.com: The Library of Technomadics
Steven K. Roberts is amazing. He was very influential on my ideas around technology when I was about 12. Super awesome guy. Never afraid of living on the bleeding edge
nym··on A Thread about Internet Archive's “Silent Killer”
Setup a monthly $5 donation. It's not much, but I know how valuable the archive is... they're doing the work the library of congress SHOULD be doing.
nym··on Go Scan 3D – Handheld 3D Scanner
Would love to rent one then!
nym··on Programmers: Before you turn 40, get a plan B (2009)
As someone who ran a startup and worked for several others in the valley, then moved away: I agree.
nym··on Most internet service providers are gone – Sonic has survived and thrived
> The phone companies say that the ruling will free up more of their resources to improve their broadband services, although at least one FCC commissioner says he will be watching to see if that's really the case.

> ISPs such as EarthLink, which already have a hard time competing on price, may still negotiate access contracts with the phone companies but are looking for alternative ways to deliver their services.

EarthLink sold the next year to Windstream for $673 million in an all-stock transaction. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2016/11/dial-...

Three years later... Windstream unloads legacy EarthLink internet assets for $330M https://www.fiercetelecom.com/telecom/windstream-unloads-leg...

nym··on Zuckerberg’s Rules Would Hurt Everyone but Facebook
Maybe it's that facebook encourages the content from your friends that is toxic, because that toxic content leads to more clicks, engagement, and ultimately revenue.
nym··on Backpage.com seized by U.S. justice authorities
Laws like this are selective in nature.
nym··on Facebook reveals Russian troll content, shuts down 135 IRA accounts
Is Facebook notifying the affected people that they had viewed fabricated news, or just releasing press releases?
nym··on Google bans cryptocurrency ads
Facebook: Hey everyone! No more cryptocurrency ads.

Google: We're banning them too.

Big Pharma: But not us right?

Google: No, we appreciate your business...

Facebook: How much are you looking to spend??

Udemy does a lot of advertising.
nym··on CryptoMaps: Cryptocurrency Market State
Love it, one recommendation though - make sure it's easy to share. When I tried to share on FB it didn't show an image, which I really wanted it to.

I know it's JavaScript, but you can still generate an image using something like https://github.com/yahoo/cronshot.

nym··on Vulnerabilities in mobile networks opens Bitcoin wallets to hackers
It turns out the hacker stole a dealer's ID which meant the OTP sent to my phone was never needed / used. The dealer id overrides the need for a password.
nym··on Vulnerabilities in mobile networks opens Bitcoin wallets to hackers
Unfortunately I don't guard my name + number like I do my passwords. Who knows how they found it, in a post equihax world I'm not sure anyone can consider this private.
nym··on Vulnerabilities in mobile networks opens Bitcoin wallets to hackers
Does Tmobile offer 2FA that isn't SMS based?
nym··on Vulnerabilities in mobile networks opens Bitcoin wallets to hackers
I was targeted this evening by a hacker who ported my phone number, and then got into FB + Yahoo (SMS reset).

The motive appears to be bitcoin, based on the people contacted via facebook.

Is it possible the initial PIN that was sent by Tmobile was intercepted via SS7? I am trying to find out if my phone (android) is compromised as well.

The accounts and phone number are back under my control but I want to find out the vector as soon as possible -I don't trust tmobile to honor requests not to allow porting.

nym··on Hacker News News Feed for the Mac Touch Bar
It's not a physical key, and touch bar sometimes crashes, which makes it difficult to back out of many UX flows (think full screen video).
nym··on Hacker News News Feed for the Mac Touch Bar
It would only be nice if they had not removed a physical escape key. It's a downgrade in my opinion. Sometimes it just turns off for no reason.
nym··on Hacker News News Feed for the Mac Touch Bar
If you ask Siri to disable, it gives you a weird "I'm sorry I can't do that" reply. Unlike a real person, there's no verbal abuse that will make her go away.
nym··on 70% Repetition in Style Sheets: Data on How We Fail at CSS Optimization
Yeah, keep the dynamic stuff on your webserver, static stuff on the CDN. Part of the reason I say "as much as possible" is because I've seen significant conversion improvements by enabling a CDN.
nym··on 70% Repetition in Style Sheets: Data on How We Fail at CSS Optimization
Typically the CDN is used for all static assets does not include the HTML. In the event that your CDN is not working, you can always fallback on your own static.example.server.

CDNs are one of those cases where the cloud vastly outperforms whatever kind of server you have.

nym··on 70% Repetition in Style Sheets: Data on How We Fail at CSS Optimization
Would throw in there "Use CDNs as much as possible"
nym··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
You don't have to rate the driver anymore I believe. Even if you put the step of tipping after getting out of the cab, it's a step.

Having a preset option is a good way to take out the friction, but instead you could just not include tipping and pay higher wages. Tipping is a way for businesses to bury the actual cost of a service.

I understand as a driver, it's nice to get tips, but if you get paid a fair wage it shouldn't matter.

nym··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
It adds friction to the process for getting from A to B.

Cabs

1. Find a cab

2. Hail the cab

3. Get in cab

4. Decide what to tip the cab

5. Pay the cab driver

6. Get out of cab

vs

Uber (without tipping)

1. Hail the uber from phone

2. Get in uber

3. Get out of uber

You could make the argument that tipping is optional, but deciding not to tip is still a decision making step.

nym··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
What if they just got paid more?
nym··on Uber rolls out in-app tipping
One of my favorite things about Uber was not having to deal with tipping. Pay them a fair wage with fair prices.
nym··on ReactOS 0.4.4 Released
I am purely naive of this project and not of another project with a similar name. I thought ReactOS was newer than ReactJS due to the version number.

The analysis was entertaining, but over-speculative.

nym··on ReactOS 0.4.4 Released
Thank you.
nym··on ReactOS 0.4.4 Released
Does this have anything to do with ReactJS or React Native?
