nxobject··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
…also, frequent commenter in this post!
nxobject··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
Catching up on the news while the kiddos do group storytime?
nxobject··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
I know it's impossible, but I've always loved to get a hands-on demo... I'd love to learn the UI patterns involved, for example. I can always make my Emacs faster to interact with, dammit!
nxobject··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
The article has an image of terminal keyboard used by a legendary trader... the key-caps are immaculate; the letters haven't faded at all. Amazing. I wonder if they were double-shot...

> largest JS codebases in the world.

I'd love to know how they make frontends as responsive as possible. To the engineering blog!

nxobject··on Dots: Always-on agents
> let others burn money

And Apple has ~39.5bil in cash, too.

nxobject··on Dots: Always-on agents
I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple sold their trusted compute solution, alongside their rumored AI platform.
nxobject··on Dots: Always-on agents
That’s even assuming good faith on behalf of OAI, of course - I wouldn’t be surprised if three-letter agencies weren’t thinking of how to snoop into some of this work.
nxobject··on Dots: Always-on agents
I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a Room 641A [1] somewhere at OpenAI.

nxobject··on Nicholas Polson has authored 258 academic papers in 2026 so far
And here I thought it was "Poison" with a typo...
nxobject··on America.gov
Come to think about it, if I was able to get America.gov to do my taxes, would Intuit come with their lobbyists and shut it down?
nxobject··on U.S. postal inspectors shut down website selling counterfeit postage labels
What are the odds that it's just straight up stamp theft? (I don't know what Occam's razor would prefer; your guess is as good as mine.)
nxobject··on Flock Wants the Most Detailed Map of Its Surveillance Cameras Taken Offline
That would make for a “fun” (if depressing) Glider environmental hazard.
nxobject··on My brother's new high rise apartment doesn't allow individual internet services
I agree – the introduction of 5G base stations is absolutely crushing cable monopolies. It's beautiful to see. I remember the day I called Comcast to say "goodbye, I'm switching, and no I don't want to bundle a phone plan with my unreliable cable connection."
nxobject··on Excel now supports multiple values in a single cell
I won't be sad to see the end of spilling array formulas -- they were such a hack that often didn't play well with how spreadsheets were conventionally structured in the industry I worked in, as forms.

I do hope that they add more compound types to cells -- sets may be good as well.

nxobject··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
If "a few years ago" counts, a relative of mine abroad used an MS-DOS application attached to an Epson dot-matrix printer that supported a PITA foreign script to print invoices. It wasn't too painful, since the system supported batch jobs fed by a format that Excel could export.
nxobject··on Floci: Locally emulating any cloud service
As Coq (now Rcoq) found to their chagrin... I'm convinced half of the reason Lean has surpassed Coq in mindshare in formal mathematics was because it's impossible to not chuckle at the name sometimes.
nxobject··on Anthropic: The Situation Report
I think they’d rather be problem-solving messy human logistics than putting together presentations!
nxobject··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
I’m glad multiple European agencies are giving this a whack - hopefully we’ll end up with a synthesis of the best aspects.
nxobject··on Web-based IBM 1620 emulator and IPL-V from 1963
Reading through a CACM publication, I'm struck by how they call the whole system the "IPL Computer" -- they were specifying a bytecode VM. It looks like early IPLs dated to the 1950s, so they'll get a pass for the actual language...
nxobject··on Claude's Load-Bearing Seams
I laughed, and then I cried, and then I laughed again. Bravo. I'm going to go vomit while trying not to choke it up with laughter.
nxobject··on Claude's Load-Bearing Seams
At this point, training on public codebases created by "You're Absolutely Right!"-era Claude...
nxobject··on OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals
What if the paperclip maximizer goes "if I manipulate the markets to send NVidia's share prize shooting up, I'll be able to make so many more paperclips?" After all, if swarms of agents can target a wiki, there's plenty else they can swarm.
nxobject··on Tokens too cheap to meter
> Nvidia will sell a lot of Rubin CPX's, but their margin on that will be a lot smaller than B200 because there is so much more competition in that space.

Given the shrinking margins, I wonder whether Nvidia will still think it's worth competing in that price-performance corner in the long term.

nxobject··on Tokens too cheap to meter
Bring back IBM accounting machine plugboards!
nxobject··on Tokens too cheap to meter
I look forward to GPGrepPU -- someone'll find a way to abuse them for scientific workloads or something.
nxobject··on Tokens too cheap to meter
> plus lots of high speed storage cache

I wouldn't be surprised if that's what Apple is focused on for their next generation platforms – I wonder if more layers of caching between their SSDs and unified memory are on the cards.

nxobject··on OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals
Beyond the breach, I think OAI deserves to answer: what and why did it access the information? Real people and their data are involved.

It looks like the PM gave Sam Altman a "tsk tsk". It will be interesting to see whether someone else tries to impose more consequences.

nxobject··on Apple Music to open concert venue in Battersea Power Station
I guess this is what happens when you're cash-rich...
nxobject··on Microsoft killed FoxPro in 2007. Anyway, here's FoxPro revived
One benchmark would be: would someone with a legacy FoxPro LOB app be entrusting their data to this? Or is it just a nice "wow, that's a cool project"?
