nxobject··on WinUI 3 Performance: A Leap Forward
For that matter, AppKit was first released on a NeXT with a 25 MHz 68030 and 8MB of RAM.
nxobject··on Coldkey – Post-quantum age key generation and paper backup tool
I'm surprised Docker is the recommended way to run the application – it seems like a lot of hidden magic relative the ~800 actual lines of Go, and given that the resulting keypair is saved outside the container.
nxobject··on Israel's AI targeting system: how data from a phone become a death sentence
My bad, thanks for pointing that out! That's me misinterpreting the tone of a comment on the internet.
nxobject··on The Original 1965 Gatorade Recipe
A heads up that this is one of those recipe sites that go "I'll tell you a long story, but there's actually a recipe at the end". But it's worth the scroll: who knew Gatorade was sold in a flat top can that needed a key?
nxobject··on Israel's AI targeting system: how data from a phone become a death sentence
Have you read the article? Its point is that anyone who has to coordinate with Hezbollah is being called a "terrorist".
nxobject··on The Boring Part of Bell Labs (2025)
Design of Experiments? Boring? I'm glad she's showing her passion – I've reviewed applications for people with just "data science" experience, versus people with additional research design experience, and their "traditional" training ended contributing so much more to our resource-constrained environment with small customer samples.

At one point, when I worked in an area with many pilot fabs, Intel was haemorraging technicians with practical experience working with statistical quality control, but didn't necessarily have a lot of formal education on their CVs. Their loss...

nxobject··on Screenshots of Old Desktop OSes
The HPC Integral PC has a fascinatingly compact design... by necessity.
nxobject··on How Fast Does Claude, Acting as a User Space IP Stack, Respond to Pings?
Value prediction's where the most gains are to be had. Of course, the irony of using an LLM to execute an LLM is delicious.
nxobject··on Guy Goma's Accidental BBC Interview Lives on After 20 Years
Honestly? A political interview show with gags like that would lighten things up. A few "crime is everywhere!!!" politicians would do very well with a whoopie cushion.
nxobject··on Guy Goma's Accidental BBC Interview Lives on After 20 Years
I do think about what I would have done – maybe I would quietly leaned into the ear of the presenter and mentioned something.

But, also, I wouldn't take any chances if I was trying to get hired there...

nxobject··on PS3 Emulator Devs Politely Ask That People Stop Flooding It with AI PRs
It’s a reasonable when you frame it like this: the consequences of one AI-assisted addition are small… but maintainers are responsible for the codebase’s long-term quality after years of additions. The bar's higher. (Similarly, my friends like it when I host an occasional dinner party, but things would really suck at a restaurant run by nothing but my clones.)
nxobject··on PS3 Emulator Devs Politely Ask That People Stop Flooding It with AI PRs
Similar for me, but regarding the Classic Macintosh APIs. The difference is that there are plenty of books, and some source code available… just not enough to stop Codex from writing subtly wrong gibberish.

I get the impression that the “10x velocity!!!!” claims still only reflect which areas have a sufficient corpus to learn from, rather than any inductive reasoning.

nxobject··on A recent experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro
I think that’s worthy of at least sour grapes, too.
nxobject··on The first microcomputer: The transfluxor-powered Arma Micro Computer from 1962
I imagine the civilian equivalent in size and structure would be a PDP-8/S (bit-serial, still discrete logic?) But DEC material from that time simply calls it a "small-scale computer".
nxobject··on Using Claude Code: The unreasonable effectiveness of HTML
In an alternate universe where HTML was the native input-output format of LLMs, we'd be talking about the unreasonable effectiveness of Markdown in sparing tokens for reasoning.
nxobject··on A recent experience with ChatGPT 5.5 Pro
I wonder as well whether large-but-finite contexts can handle algebraic questions that require traversing up and down levels of abstraction, at least not without "thrashing".
nxobject··on Ask HN: We just had an actual UUID v4 collision...
I imagine that there might still be a way to swing by with RF equipment and tip the scales in your favor. And if you're important enough, I'm sure there'll be someone motivatd enough to do this. After all, Polymarket was motivating enough for someone to take a hair dryer to a weather station...

nxobject··on Casio S100X Japanese Lacquer Edition (JP Page Only)
My god, the keys: the keycaps are __double-shot__, have scissor switches, and 3-key rollover.
nxobject··on Rust but Lisp
"Lust", or "Risp"?
nxobject··on Dirty Frag: Universal Linux LPE
I know this was a thing re: Copy Fail, but... ...LPE = "local privilege escalation", for everyone not directly involved in the security.
nxobject··on Canvas online again as ShinyHunters threatens to leak schools’ data
I'll be shocked if Canvas ever gets held publicly accountable for this.

I believe FERPA's PII provisions apply to Canvas and contractors handing PII in general (at least as interpreted by the Department of Education). Now, will Canvas be held accountable by ED in this administration? Hah – DOGE probably ran that through the shredder as well.

nxobject··on RFK Jr. plans to curb antidepressants, which he falsely compares to heroin
> and finding a humanist way to deal with depressions and its symptoms

If only everyone could afford psychotherapy!

nxobject··on Ti-84 Evo
Oh, I didn't know they split it into two tracks! I was there when you had Math Studies/SL/HL/Further.
nxobject··on Windows API is Successful Cross-Platform API (2024)
A good answer is “it’s successful because of the mileage we’ve gotten out of Wine” - whether it’s Valve or Apple. The costs are relative to the benefits, no?
nxobject··on Windows API is Successful Cross-Platform API (2024)
If I ever get the time, I’d like to make Wine as good as possible for UI app distribution - native UI bindings and the ability to slim down and bundle the runtime. Alas!
nxobject··on What is Z-Angle Memory and why is Intel developing it?
But will this go the way of a “non core” product like Optane (or modems for that matter?)
nxobject··on Ti-84 Evo
Faster than a base-config SGI O2, with a MIPS R10000 at 150 MHz! /s
nxobject··on Ti-84 Evo
On my favorite designs ever? The first TI-Nspire "battleship" keyboard. Mini alpha-symbol keys in the corners of actual keys. It looked so annoying, but my muscle memory got very good at it.

HL or SL? (It's been a while for me, but I know I needed PDF/CDF functions... and I don't know about the optional modules/Further.)
nxobject··on Lib0xc: A set of C standard library-adjacent APIs for safer systems programming
I'm curious – is MSFT using this in production, or is this a "20% time" project? I'm not sure MSVC could compile the GNU extensions used.
