https://www.mnxsolutions.com - 24x7 Cloud Server Management https://mnx.io - Cloud hosting, and managed services https://tritondatacenter.com - Orchestration for your private cloud and Docker containers
Code + issues are active under https://github.com/TritonDataCenter (smartos-live, illumos-joyent, triton, etc.), and docs are at https://docs.smartos.org/.
SmartOS is released every two weeks, and Triton is released every 8 weeks -- see https://www.tritondatacenter.com/downloads
And Triton object storage will have S3 support in the next release!
[edit: removed semicolon from link!]
using our package manager pkgsrc [https://pkgsrc.smartos.org/], you can install the MTA of your choice too!
We've released a new version every two weeks post acquisition, and are continuing to develop and invest.
We also hold office hours events roughly every two weeks on Discord[2], and would love for you to stop by and ask any questions, or just listen along!

Aside from Triton, there's a quite a bit of interest in Proxmox and XCP-ng in the community.
While alternatives are gaining popularity, they certainly do not have the same ecosystem that VMware users are accustomed to. Organizations are going to have to pony up, or make concessions.
Currently this is supported on Triton DataCenter only, but our internal roadmap has us building a standalone version similar to how folks use SmartOS standalone.
The key to success is having the right on-prem solution to help bring both teams together while driving costs down. Our solution at Triton Datacenter (https://tritondatacenter.com) has helped various enterprises tackle this issue by providing a public cloud-like experience on-prem.
- Realtime kernel/lib patching.
- Patch management.
- 24x7 monitoring and response.
- Metric collections, alerting, and health reviews.
- Tuning and infrastructure best practices wherever you are (AWS/GCP/Azure/mnx/colo).
- Ad-hoc support - example this week -- one customer who runs large ecommerce valentine day related -- needed eyes on all infrastructure. We sat in slack with them, and huddled realtime to work through any issues.Triton is much simpler to operate, manage and support - and we’ve never looked back!

PXE booted lightweight compute nodes with a robust API, including operator portal, user portal, and cli.
Keep an eye out for the work we are doing with Triton Linux + K8s. Very lightweight Triton Linux compute node + baremetal k8s deployments on Triton.
Triton was built on the backs of giants -- so a slightly different scenario than most.. But it is clear that customers will pay for open source products, and you can more than pay your rent one day!

MNX has recently acquired Triton DataCenter[1] and commercial support business from Joyent[2], and we are working on building the next generation of the platform.
Take a look at the GitHub repo for an idea of what we're up to: https://github.com/tritondatacenter.
Ideally you'd be very experienced with Node.js to support the existing code base, and ready to explore Rust for new features.

Triton is open source[3], so you can run it in your own facility, at home, and our Public Cloud with the same experience.

Are you running Manta (https://github.com/joyent/manta) for anything? If so, is that meeting you needs for object storage?
I would love to hear more about the replacement of VMware experience and any other Triton details good/bad.
I also love that they continued to bet on Illumos and am looking forward to the continued growth and development in the Illumos space.
We're a managed cloud infrastructure business (since 2006), and also run our own public cloud.. Reach out to me via nick at mnx io.
