nvarsj··on Keyboard.io Silently Dead
Seems like the owner @jesse has even unregistered from the discourse server. They're not responding to emails at all, and nothing on Discord. No parting message or anything. Rumour is the US tarrifs killed the business.
nvarsj··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
Maybe she enjoys it? Kids especially ones leaning ASD tend to have these kind of obsessions. I don't think anyone can force a 6 year old to practice rubik's cube 2 hours a day.
nvarsj··on I Don't Like LLMs
Insert "Old Man Yells At Cloud" meme
nvarsj··on Google stole open source code without crediting the authors (Artemis/Minitap)
This kind of thing is almost always a result of the performance culture. There are a lot of promo oriented people in big tech who just want money and have no ethics (or engineering competency usually), sadly. These people have no issue at all plagiarising or stealing credit to get themselves more money and success. And it works.
nvarsj··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Kind of bizarre tbh, given the software market for VR seems absolutely dead. Announcing it with a 7 year old game is like, what? What's Valve's plan here?
nvarsj··on Steam Frame starts at $1059
Except far less comfortable and motion sick inducing for a non-trivial portion of the population. No thanks.

HL Alyx was awesome though, nothing else on VR has been worth it for me.

nvarsj··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
I purge my box every few years. Do you really need 20 usb cables. I do save the esoteric ones though.
nvarsj··on iPhone Duo
Triple fold just seems awkward as heck, plus you have to design the UI for it around the fold section. I’m pretty bullish on the duo design. Hopefully we see some more unique designs in the future if this works out.
nvarsj··on iPhone Duo
What's up with all the negativity? Apple is finally doing something radical (for them) again with the iPhone, their bread and butter. And I'm all here for it. 10 years of the same form factor was getting old. I'm gonna buy this on release, easiest decision ever.
nvarsj··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
Reminds me a lot of big tech campus interior decoration. A lot of greys, neutral colors, very little color or personality.

Pretty much what you'd expect from techies that never really thought too hard about their living space beyond functionality.

I mean, I'm the same, so no judgement, but I did hire an interior decorator for my own place. Definitely worth the money and my house has all kinds of funky fun stuff and colors going on (on top of being 130 years old and super wonky everywhere, ha ha).

nvarsj··on Changes to Sourcehut's terms of service regarding LLMs
Well I guess it’s time to move my repos and stop paying. The moralism here is ridiculous. My code is my own, sorry.
nvarsj··on Notes on Private Trackers
bibliotek is an interesting one, and one of the most exclusive trackers around.

They have very high requirements as their entire purpose is archival. You can't download anything without uploading new content first.

It's probably the most complete archive of niche books in existence - it's a librarian's wet dream. No wonder LLM training used it, and probably paid a lot of money to someone for access.

nvarsj··on Doctors are finally learning to manage antidepressant withdrawal
I can believe it. They are used for general anxiety disorder which I imagine can be kind of similar - an over-reaction to some stimuli.
nvarsj··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
Eh I feel like search results have been pretty bad for years. SEO and fake page link farms ruined it.

ChatGPT is trained on all of Reddit and internet forums where most of the useful info is. It just automates the drudgery.

nvarsj··on Kagi added a setting for removing paywalled links from search results
Yeah I pretty much soley used assistant.kagi.com the last couple months. Traditional search days are really numbered.

I'm finding though ChatGPT with sol 5.6 is as good or better, so I'm using that primarily these days. Can also do actions in browsers on your behalf, so you can have it book your whole vacation, etc. Pretty rad.

nvarsj··on Opus 5.0 drives incoherence into the stratosphere
Just use Sol 5.6. There's no reason to endure Anthropic models anymore.
nvarsj··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Yeah OAI really nailed the communication style with GPT. It also seems just way more token efficient and faster compared to cc. Myself and all my friends have cancelled our $200 Anthropic subs. I'm using a $20 personal plan and even that is enough for my usage so far.

Also using Codex or Pi makes you realise how slow and clunky the cc harness is. Even the desktop app is more responsive and has better UX.

Funny how quickly the tides change.

nvarsj··on Kimi K3-256k
tintinweb/pi-subagents. Then I use superpowers and it spins up subagents automatically. Works really well and you can customise the models and efforts you want to use with local AGENTS.md.

I’m primarily using gpt-5.6 and then opus for reviews.

nvarsj··on Kimi K3-256k
Pi harness with subagents is pretty great. I’m using it for everything now.
nvarsj··on Zero roadkill as Amazon canopy bridges secure 15,000 crossings
Well no king would ever accept and propagate that religion.
nvarsj··on Jellyfin founder Andrew leaves team
Not hard to understand. People will pay for a better UX. Which Plex has, once you disable all the streaming junk.

Also there’s simply more clients for it. The only way to play Bluray Dolby Vision layers correctly is with an AM6B+ which has an amazing Plex frontend.

nvarsj··on Steam Machine: Between 12k and 15k Units Sold per week
This assumes Valve isn't artifically bumping up the Steam Machine for more exposure.
nvarsj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
Well I don't know the details from Apple's side, and this was 20 years ago. That was just the discussion on the ground. I personally experienced a senior Mot employee grilling me about some IP I had developed, then go to Apple the next week. Also saw many directors/VPs with extensive proprietary knowledge go to Apple. Apple opened up recruiting events 10 minutes down the street from Mot HQ in Schaumburg Hilton to poach the best people (which I went to, and flew to Cupertino to interview for the original iPhone ios team - wish I had passed that, I would be retired by now!). I know there was also a free flow of information as part of the ROKR collab while Apple was working secretly on the iPhone.
nvarsj··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
Psychotherapy. I've also done a lot of CBT in the past - but I found it didn't really solve my issues, just provides some temporary relief. I personally found going for a long walk to be better than CBT techniques.
nvarsj··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
Yep - meds. Tried a bunch and duloxetine is making a massive difference for me. On them for 4 months so far.

Also picked up therapy yet again but tbh I never found therapy to really solve things - it helps me understand myself better at a logical level but the underlying anxiety / depression (including suicidal ideation) has never really gone away until the meds.

I'd say right now I'm feeling quite content with life, and even find myself feeling genuinely happy throughout the day about things. Which is something I haven't really experienced before. I still have some of those feelings of anxiety crop up but they fade away pretty fast. Depression is completely gone for the most part. I'm still trying to understand this new reality as I'm not used to it at all. But I think (with some caution still!) it's pretty great.

I know anti depressants have a lot of bad press and I’ve even had therapists tell me it’s a crutch. So I’ve generally been hesitant to start them. But they work, not sure why they work, but they do for me at least and I’m glad I stuck with it to find the right one.

nvarsj··on Prioritize mental health, and why communication is so important
This... I finally changed my life by talking to a psychiatrist after 40+ years of suffering and trying a myriad of things. Mental illnesses are real and need real treatment.
nvarsj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
The irony to me is Apple did the exact same thing to Motorola back in the day, which I saw firsthand as a Mot eng. Poached employees and IP. I doubt the iPhone would have happened otherwise.

Jobs was absolutely ruthless and would do anything for his goals.

nvarsj··on Apple sues OpenAI, accuses ex-employees of stealing trade secrets
As an old timer, I saw this firsthand happen with Motorola. Apple did the same shenanigans, stealing IP and engineers. I doubt the iPhone would have happened otherwise.

Jobs was absolutely ruthless and would do anything for his goals.

nvarsj··on GPT-5.6
The harness is so much better than cc which is a buggy mess. Gpt is also way faster than Claude. I’ve been using gpt for a while now and I know a lot of people that swapped away from Anthropic for multiple reasons. However - fable still seems to be the best coding agent, it’s just slow and the harness sucks. So I still use it in some rare cases like to review codex. I’m hoping 5.6 lets me drop it entirely.
nvarsj··on The anatomy of an AI-native org
Yikes, why is this AI slop post #1 on HN? I have to deal with enough of this at work.
