nvalis··on Show HN: Bodily Oddities
I learned diaphragmatic breathing pretty early in childhood. Later, I noticed that whenever I got the hiccups, taking a deep belly breath early on, usually within the first two or three hiccups, would make them stop. Over time, I learned to do this unconsciously, so nowadays it's basically a reflex as soon as a hiccup starts. Since then, I haven't really had any hiccups longer than one contraction.
nvalis··on Show HN: What if the speed of light was 5 km/h?
Same for me in firefox. Even with the website closed I get a popup of "dmitrybrant.com controls your cursor" from time to time or if i hover over the top of the URL bar. Visiting the website again and explicitely pressing Esc, then closing the page worked to get rid of the message.
nvalis··on Visualizing Binary Files
I always liked the 3D visualization in Veles[0]. It's very intuitive to make out structured ASCII or other non-compressed sections in binary data.

nvalis··on Tell HN: Anthropic no longer allowing Claude Code subscriptions to use OpenClaw
I can't see any results any more.
nvalis··on Japanese Woodblock Print Search
I took a class at his workshop in Tokyo and highly recommend the experience. So much thought and detail goes into preparing the wood blocks and even into "just" printing them.
nvalis··on World Wide Lightning Location Network
There are hourly and daily maps [0]. But there is an alternative live map at https://map.blitzortung.org/

If it's about intrusion detection of packaged goods lentils, beans or rice are very useful [0]. Cheap but great tamper detection.

nvalis··on The best $4 ever spent
I would say this applies to more than just kids, this is the case for almost everyone.
nvalis··on AppleWatchAmmeter
That's because Phyphox is financially backed by multiple public bodys of the German governement, mostly the RWTH Aachen and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as pointed out on the landing page [0].

nvalis··on Nxylon: New super-black material made from wood

I love the concept of moving walkways on large airports and always wondered why there are non with multiple speeds like this one. Is it a security aspect?

My guess is that in this case the first 4 listed are main contributors (in whatever way: authors, funding, ...) , while the following are alphabetically sorted.
nvalis··on US inflation means families are spending $709 more per month than two years ago
It's more people see prices dropping hence their money increase in relative value so they save up more instead of spending it.

nvalis··on Grid World
Beautiful article, both in text and in visuals.

> Then my grid-vision exploded outwards from this center, enveloping everything, and I dreamed that the grid was the understructure to not just my own memories but to the world. I think we project grids outwards onto the world from within ourselves, shining their structure from our minds.

This paragraph instantly let me think of the theory of Lattice QCD [0] where both space and time get discretised in a lattice to be able to simulate and make predictions on processes happening on the subatomic level.

nvalis··on Don't Use DuckDuckGo
Kagi also provides a feature called "Lenses". How does Focus compare to Kagi Lenses?
nvalis··on Don't Use DuckDuckGo
Kagi or Brave search? Kagi is superiour in search result quality in my experience, Brave on the other hand is free (as in free beer).
