nutanc··on An experiment in teaching a language without relying on translation
This is a very interesting experiment. A couple of observations from my side.

1. First goal is mentioned as, "prove that you can learn japanese without using your mother tongue". But when I click on start you show a Monkey with some Japanese text. In my mind I see the picture of a monkey and think of the word in my mother tongue, Telugu(Kothi), then I check the Japanese script. So I am not strictly learning Japanese without using my mother tongue.

2. Since Japanese script is also new to me it becomes harder. As I have to learn the alphabet first and then words and then sentences.

3. To really try this experiment out instead of the Japanese text the picture should be associated with the Japanese word and Japanese sentences. If you realize, thats how we learn language as a kid. We are shown images and told to repeat words and then sentences.

4. Deep learning tries to do something similar. Here what you are trying to do is encode the word in an image as a translation layer and then we jump across languages. Deep learning also learns embeddings and then uses those embeddings to translate. In this case, the embedding is an image, but computers can use lesser info than all the pixels to embed.

5. This embedding approach has limitations in deep learning as we can see from the current translation engines. But by using sound and image maybe our brain embeds information better and hence we learn languages better.

nutanc··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Everyone here seems to be mentioning how they want to move but cannot move because of the network effects.

Even for me, my kids school sends updates on WhatsApp. Bank also sends its updates on WhatsApp etc. But I have avoided using WhatsApp for these purposes. And so far I have survived. Because almost all businesses don't rely exclusively on WhatsApp. Atleast in my case. They send emails, SMS messages etc. It's not as clean as WhatsApp. But everything has its pros and cons.

If we really want to move, then I think we can move. It will be a little harder to start with. But then something better will hopefully come across. Tech has always filled gaps which come up.

nutanc··on Ask HN: Please share your experience teaching your kids to program
Got my 6 year old to write a python program. He was so excited the computer did the homework for him. This is a fun way to introduce programming.

Example session:

>>>number_of_passengers_travelling=672

>>>number_of_passengers_got_down=21

>>>total_remaining=number_of_passengers_travelling-number_of_passengers_got_down

>>>print(total)

His only question was, do I have to type so much and I said yes. There is no way I am letting my kid name variables v1 and v2 :)

nutanc··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
We recently launched in the US. Nice that Dialpad has noticed us. All the best to them :)
nutanc··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
"if I search for "apple", what should the first result be? Wikipedia or Apple.com?"

Apple is a common noun in the English language. So I would assume the first result to be Wikipedia or some site which gives the best details about apples. The second result could be Apple.com or whoever has applied for the keyword.

nutanc··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
This is exactly what happened and a bidding war started(long time back).

And then we decided to step back from the bidding war. One reason to do so was because we did not have VC funded money. If we had VC money, maybe we would have continued the bidding war. But glad that we could make the right choice.

nutanc··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
As I have mentioned, I have no problem with my competitors being able to do this. The problem is how Google buries ozonetel.com below everything else. It should be absolutely fine if Google puts Ozonetel as first search result(because there is a brand and company called Ozonetel), and then puts the ads below that. Its win-win for everyone.

"If your customers intend to go directly to you, why do they not go directly to your site but instead search for it on a general search engine?"

It's because now mostly people(including me) search for a brand we know and click on the site. Mainly we type in the address bar(without .com) and press enter. The default search engine brings up the list and we click.

nutanc··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
Yes, we have also been beating the drum since a long time. But unfortunately our drum is not as big as DHH :)
nutanc··on Uber discovered they’d been defrauded out of 2/3 of their ad spend
We did a similar kind of experiment some time back and found both FB ads and Google ads were doing jack shit for us. Google was better. FB ads were absolutely useless. So we stopped our ad spend. We observed no change in our customer acquisition.

Another way these ad engines extract money out of you is by allowing competitors to bid for your brand name keyword. Try searching for Ozonetel on Google. There will be six competitor ads and then our website will show up :)

In our early days we used to be scared and bid for it.Lost a lot of money doing that. Then we talked about it and stopped. Again, no change in customer acquisition. Turns out, customers scroll down the ads and still click on our website.

Are our competitors getting some of our traffic?

Of course.

But my business is not built on the assumption that people will not find my competitors. Its built on the fact that people will explore options and try to find the best fit for them. So its ok.

nutanc··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language
Actually when I write blogs I listen to music. So I dont think it matters a lot whether we are writing code or English. The songs and music just sort of goes in the background.
nutanc··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language
This may be the reason why you can still learn programming even when you are 40 years old, but its very hard for you to learn a new language the older you get as you language acquisition skills fade away.

Also the experiment was "The researchers showed them snippets of code and asked them to predict what action the code would produce.".

This may not be the best way to prove the thesis conclusively. Because when I read code I check the syntax fast and then I try to figure out logic.

"The researchers saw little to no response to code in the language regions of the brain"

This may mean that the participants quickly scanned the sytntax(language part of brain is used) and then they tried to figure out the logic(multiple demand network of brain is used)

nutanc··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language
Empirical success shows that the GPT-3 model has seen the sequence before(maybe many times).

Transformer architectures do map sequences to sequences. What is not known is that the task of programming is a sequence problem. This experiment seems to suggest that maybe its not a sequence problem.

nutanc··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language
So this may mean that language models like GPT-3 are not best suited for code generation tasks. And networks trained on languages may not learn the feature embeddings needed for programming languages.
nutanc··on Every Model Learned by Gradient Descent Is Approximately a Kernel Machine
This can have very good real world consequences. If this is true, then it makes sense to first attack a problem with SVMs and then if the results are encouraging, try to go the deep learning route if needed.
nutanc··on Drivers react to Tesla’s full self-driving beta release
Would we all want a world where every car drives itself? Yes.

Are we anywhere close yet? No.

Then why is Tesla calling it as Full Self Driving? Because it's marketing and more money can be made in updates.

Is it wrong to call something as Full self driving when it obviously is not full self driving? Well, duh!

nutanc··on Drivers react to Tesla’s full self-driving beta release
Lets do a simple test:

You are in between two walls and there are two straight lanes. Lane 1 has Tesla FSD coming in at full speed. Lane 2 has a human driver coming in at full speed. You can choose to be in one lane. The FSD and the human can both see you only 50 mts out and if they brake as soon as they see you, you will survive.

Which lane will you choose?

nutanc··on Show HN: Chat bot powered by GPT-3
Given OpenAI's pricing I am assuming a single chat session should cost a minimum of 5-10 cents. Maybe more depending on their prompt size. So unless they have an enterprise deal with OpenAI, this service will end being very costly. Might be cheaper to have a human agent.

That said, it's still early stage, the bot itself has a lot of kinks as mentioned in the comments. Hopefully things will settle down soon.

nutanc··on Deep learning job postings have collapsed in the past six months
AI has a business problem.

Very few businesses I know actually have a deep learning problem. But they want a deep learning solution. Lest they get left out of the hype train.

nutanc··on GPT-3 has no idea what it’s talking about
The article is a critical view on GPT-3. Fair. It is well known that Gary Marcus is not a fan of the GPT kind of systems. And he does make some valid points. If you want to look at a better balanced view it actually helps to look at all their prompts [1].

That said, I think it's more of a hype that GPT-3 is moving towards AGI. The actual GPT-3 paper says "Language Models are Few-Shot Learners"[2]. So it's actually surprising that no one has actually done a real analysis of this. Are they really few shot learners? My experiments seem to suggest otherwise.

But for sure, GPT-3 is the best general purpose natural language system out there in the world. I don't think anyone can say otherwise.

nutanc··on Sci-fi story coauthored by GPT-3, including in-character human/AI chats
Nice. I had tried a short story effort concentrating more on speed of generation. If you work with GPT-3 it becomes a very helpful tool.

The story I generated: https://gpt3experiments.substack.com/p/the-devils-mind

nutanc··on Court dismisses Genius lawsuit over lyrics-scraping by Google
So if I scrape Google search page and remove the ads and show it on my page, that's ok now?
nutanc··on Show HN: Humans vs AI – A/B testing GPT-3
It will work for this use case. In any case, most probably a human will select from a bunch of generated texts. Whether the texts are generated by a copywriter or GPT-3 will be the difference. So for small texts like heading and CTA buttons this should work. Longer texts are a different story though.

More than A/B testing this might be a better fit for web site building tools like wix.com and and webflow.com

nutanc··on Why GPT-3 Matters
Around 2 weeks I think
nutanc··on Why GPT-3 Matters
"Give humans a new tool and they will amaze you." You are right. Already some special use cases of the API have come up. I have been exploring the API since yesterday and it is a big deal. But not for the reason of AI and AGI. That may happen later. But right now, the API is the game changer. Single API to apply for lots of different tasks. I have been updating my thread of demos which I am building at https://twitter.com/nutanc/status/1285128265519083520
nutanc··on Show HN: Twitter thread of bunch of GPT-3 based demos built by me. Updating live
Exploring the GPT-3 API. I am mashing up different demo prototype ideas that I have. I will be opening up the demos and code and the priming prompts once I am done building all my ideas. It will be one huge blogpost :)
nutanc··on OpenAI's GPT-3 may be the biggest thing since Bitcoin
GPT-3 isn't magic. That's the most important thing. I got so amused with the hagiographical tweets that I coded myself a non GPT-3 demo :)

https://twitter.com/nutanc/status/1284446411438710784

nutanc··on OpenAI's GPT-3 may be the biggest thing since Bitcoin
The main thing to consider is the author choosing the sentences. The author says they only made a couple( less than 10) edits. But the human input is what is important. I remember something similar when GPT2 came out(I think it was an interview conducted by GPT2, with human tuning).

I have been following the twitter hype on GPT-3. @quasimondo has done some excellent analysis on text generation using GPT-3. For me, when reading GPT-3 text, something is off. It jumps around too much. It does not seem to care. I couldn't read more than 10 sentences if the text is completely GPT-3 generated. But if prompted properly by the human at regular intervals, it sounds ok. Generally it holds a thought upto one paragraph. So maybe the usefulness of GPT-3 is in scenarios like, I have a thought, I want to complete it, I fire up GPT-3, prompt it and generate different results, choose one which is closest to my thoughts and edit it and publish. I am sure that's what this blog author did.

GPT-3 is really good at NLG. But people seem to be extrapolating the results to NLP.

nutanc··on OpenAI API
Thanks Greg. Will check it out. Would love to see AI move from the "it's fun" zone to "make some money" zone soon though. We are all invested in the success of AI :)
nutanc··on OpenAI API
Why are there no live examples on the page. All I see is video presentations and some cached API response.

Is it a confidence problem? Are the OpenAI folks not confident on a single use case? Or did I miss the live demo somewhere?

nutanc··on Ask HN: My wife might lose the ability to speak in 3 weeks – how to prepare?
At a minimum get the following list of sentences recorded in her voice, http://www.festvox.org/cmu_arctic/cmuarctic.data

Make sure the recordings are of a good quality. This will ensure that you will have a baseline TTS of her voice at the minimum.
