When I was in high school (graduated in 2006), we were only required to take chemistry OR biology, but not required to take both. Those in my class who were afraid of math (most of them) took biology, while the rest of us enjoyed our chemistry fun.
Funny you mention this, as I was told by the hiring manager at a wendy's that I worked at that she was hiring me to "do the man work", which meant unloading and putting away truck, working grill, taking out the trash, etc... Never really thought about that until now...
If the game is as they say it is and can't be played without the server, due to critical game logic being done there, I don't think they can get away with the pirating excuse as easily this time.
Maybe feelings need to be hurt...A lot of people expect things to just be handed to them these days, especially with the "everybody is a winner" culture that is pushed in the elementary schools currently.
Microsoft has been making some decent moves into open and free as of late. The biggest thing lately, that I can think of, was their open sourcing of the entire asp.net stack:
I've done quite a bit of work in both C# and ruby and I haven't had any more or less difficulty in developing against APIs with either of them. Development speed is about the same either way. Working against a well built API helps. In a previous project at work I developed a mobile web services back-end in java and integrated Twilio into it in less than a day. Twilio is super easy to work with, so implement it now! :)
I live in Flint, MI (which has been #1 in violent crime for the past few years) and the thought of people around me potentially possessing and, possibly, carrying firearms around never crosses my mind when I'm out and about. Maybe I'd just prefer to not give myself a heart attack over worrying about someone nearby carrying a gun, but in one of the cities where one should be worried most about it, it doesn't even rank on the scale of things to think about generally.
I could see this being an excellent on-the-go digital sculpting/modeling machine. If the digitizer is comparable to a Wacom, this would be great for zbrush.
What got me in easy for my internship was a decent GPA (3.8 at the time) + working full-time as a shift manager from when I turned 18 until the company hired me. GPA + maintaining some sort of responsibility definitely helped
> We are somewhat socially liberal - gay rights are making headway here - and fiscally conservative - our state sales tax is 6%.
Based on this everything else you mentioned about Iowa, it seems like it would be a great state for third party candidates to try to upset the two party balance.
> I typed faster than the keys were registered and he said it was because my stance was tense and I needed to relax.
If this happened while you were typing in Word, they may not have installed the update that fixed this issue (was reported in the comments of a surface article on here somewhere).
>I still had to sync all my music from iTunes though, but I don't see how the Surface would be able to do this without requiring to be 'tethered' (iTunes has WiFi sync) to a PC.
By storing your music in Skydrive, this removes the need to 'tether' to a PC
Unless, of course, you pin your most used applications to the taskbar or create a shortcut on the desktop. Honestly, it is pretty easy to avoid the metro screen if you really want to. In any given day, I may see the metro screen 2-3 times the entire day, on average, all because I setup my machine to work the way it is most productive for me.
> Nobody wants to manipulate an upright screen with an outstretched arm. It's a completely unnatural thing to do, and the complete opposite of everything we've learned about the UX.
Hence why some OEMs are offering convertible laptops and all-in-ones, which actually look pretty nice and should complement the new interface nicely.
Given the fact that several of my enterprise clients provide iPads to quite a few employees, which definitely don't support legacy apps or Office (which SurfaceRT will come installed with), I don't see why legacy support would be an issue where the use case for an iPad already fits and a Surface tablet might fit better.
I blame Verizon for my not having a WP7 phone. I refuse to switch over to AT&T and Sprint coverage is hit or miss in my area, but I still hold a grudge over Verizon for not offering a better WP7 device than the HTC Trophy.
Agreed, having used Vista from release to Win 7 release, I never seemed to see the stability issues that so many seemed to be reporting. It made me wonder if people were just trying to work with ridiculously outdated hardware and software.
Alt-F4 from the desktop in Win 8 still works, as well. Being that I'm in the desktop a majority of the time on Win 8 and have always used Alt-F4 if actually needed to turn off my machine for some reason (who does this anymore?), so not much change for me.
The same is true for me. Damn typing classes would mark you down if you didn't two space, so that drove me into two spacing everything, as well. I've been trying to push myself into single spacing for a while now, though...It's tough.
How is the dev life over at QL? They keep calling and trying to get me to come in for an interview, but I haven't had the time to really consider it having just gotten in at ciber in Southfield a few months back.
Actually, you can even get around the need for shortcut keys for admin tools if you really need to. Admin tools can be added to the start screen from the settings menu on the home screen: Settings -> Tiles -> "Show administrative tools".For other applications, if you don't want to interact with the tiles, you can hit the Win key and just start typing to search for applications, just as you could in Win7.
How likely are people using a professional workstation/content creation setup to use metro? Until their creation/development/productivity apps are developed and optimized for the type of machines they use (large monitors, etc..) as metro apps, they'll continue to use them in the desktop as they always have. I think the only time I really see the metro/start screen when I'm in windows 8 is when I'm developing metro apps, everything else I see in the desktop.
