Slightly more complex CRUD apps? ;)

Met my fiancee in Hunter's safety class in middle school. We've been together 11.5 years now.

All three actually seem to work quite nicely together[0]

Some that I've been enjoying lately:

- SpecsFor: Some nice BDD wrappers around NUnit and Moq http://specsfor.com/ - Glimpse: A great diagnostic console tool for ASP.NET applications http://getglimpse.com/ - FluentMigrator: Awesome DB migration framework https://github.com/schambers/fluentmigrator

Well, they made it more touch friendly, so they were obviously copying Apple... /s

numo16··on A Software Engineer’s Adventures in Learning Mathematics
> I feel like that's scaring away lots of people who would otherwise do just fine.

I am much in agreement with this. I know that the guidance counselor on staff when I was in high school would heavily steer people away from going into computer science/programming if they hadn't completed the entire catalog of math classes available at our school. Her assumption was that you needed to be some sort of math wizard in order to be successful in a CS or programming degree.

numo16··on Techies Who Are Homeschooling Their Kids
I have to wonder if there would be a change in educational quality if teachers were actually paid and treated like professionals who were educating the next generation of thinkers.

For instance, a starting teacher's salary in Michigan is around $30,000-35,000 a year. I know I personally wouldn't want to work, for that low of a salary, for 60+ hours a week (managing and teaching classes of 25+ students for 8+ hours a day, then having to use time outside of class to plan further lessons, manage paperwork, work on professional development, do all of the other crap required by school administration), for 9 months out of the year with some ad hoc work during the summer "vacation". I especially wouldn't do all of that just for everyone to tell me that I'm doing it wrong (which seems to be the major public opinion currently), and I have a feeling many people who would be great educators are smart enough to realize it isn't worth it for these same reasons.

numo16··on CoreCLR is now open source
Unity has been developing their own runtime for a while now to get away from the mono licensing costs of using a new version. I'll be interested to see how they react to Microsoft open-sourcing a lot of stuff they might have been able to use.
numo16··on Ask HN: I got let go this morning. What should I do next?
Looks like you guys are doing some awesome stuff! I'll have to keep you in mind if I ever decide to leave my cushy DevOps job in Troy.
numo16··on Microsoft to invest in Cyanogen
Love my 928. Still runs as smoothly as the day I got it (1.5 years ago). Haven't had an android device that has competed performance-wise for the same duration. Having used the big three platforms for several years now (and still developing for all of them), Windows Phone is still my favorite, by far.
numo16··on Strider – Open-Source Continuous Integration and Deployment Server
> I think for many keeping source-code locked down is important.

This is the primary reason we went with self-hosted bamboo and octopus deploy for CI and deployment. It does move managing the infrastructure of it all over to our side, but it could always be worse, I suppose (previous jobs not having any sort of structured deployment workflow, in particular)

Yes. From the FAQ:

Q: Who can use Visual Studio Community? A: Here’s how individual developers can use Visual Studio Community: Any individual developer can use Visual Studio Community to create their own free or paid apps.

Or, you know, just using the Azure portion of the program and deploying in any language with any database implementation to linux VMs with docker.

numo16··on Introducing Visual Studio’s Emulator for Android
I believe the thinking is that if your business is still around after the 3 years of free licenses, it is successful enough to afford to pay for licenses from that point forward.

From the actual site for VS Community [0]:

> Q: Who can use Visual Studio Community? A: Here’s how individual developers can use Visual Studio Community: Any individual developer can use Visual Studio Community to create their own free or paid apps.

Sounds to me like you do fit in that category for this edition of VS. That being said, .NET development definitely does still seem very VS centric, but things seem to be changing. The experience of using sublime text + omnisharp[1] doesn't look too bad.

Based on this interview/article on the verge [0], it sounds like there are plans to open up to devs eventually (not surprised, considering microsoft's current trends), sounds like they are just taking this one step at a time.

numo16··on Mono for Unreal Engine
The Unreal license is only that much if you keep your subscription going. You can subscribe and then cancel your subscription whenever you want, while still being allowed to publish using the latest version of UE4 that was available while you were subscribed.

From the EULA:

After cancellation of your Subscription by either you or Epic, you will not be entitled to access or use future Versions of the Engine Code or Assets that Epic makes available under the License. However, cancellation of your Subscription will not affect your rights under the License with respect to any Licensed Technology you have already downloaded under the License.

This also blocks GM/Ford/Chrysler from selling directly to the consumer. This isn't specifically Tesla focused, but is favoring the auto dealer network which wants to remain relevant and get their cut.

numo16··on Microsoft buys Minecraft for 2.5B
Pretty sure the every version outside of PC is not Java, so there is already an existing minecraft codebase that could potentially be ported to WP (Xbox version seems mostly likely for porting since it will already be using directx for rendering).
