numeromancer··on Oldest and Fatherless: The Terrible Secret of Tom Bombadil (2011)
David Lynch directing The Lord of the Rings would be a fascinating experiment. Lynch would make the experience of the Ring-bearer, in particular, sublime.

Urbit has made it's own (characteristically idiosyncratic) syllabary for ASCII symbol pronumciation:

numeromancer··on A sketch of the biggest idea in software architecture
Like a glass jar that has been dropped onto a stone floor.
numeromancer··on Common libraries and data structures for C
In C, whenever any part of the creature needs to do some thinking, it grows its own small head to do just enough thinking to get by, and then goes about its business. The process is simple, but the result is often Cthulhic.
numeromancer··on Will Hare replace C? Or Rust? Or Zig? Or anything else?
It's hard to mature when you never stop growing.

numeromancer··on Russian news channel RT to broadcast on Rumble after Big Tech curbs
Should "we" force you to label your posts as "activism" rather than "information" or "discussion"?
numeromancer··on I wrote a program that sends cats to my phone when I'm sad at the computer
Cats. Lots and lots of cats.
numeromancer··on An underrated idea: the priority view
Imagine that the Imagination Quotient is a number between 0 and 1, with 0 being the inability to imagine even what you're looking at, and 1 representing the ability to imagine a real thing unseen in full detail. The Imagination Quotient required to imagine that someone's utility is 80 is would be an proper imaginary number.
numeromancer··on An underrated idea: the priority view
> "Imagine that the gifted boy has a total utility of 80,..."

Argument discarded.

numeromancer··on IPv4 addresses are silly, inet_aton(3) doubly so
> may be decimal, octal, or hexadecimal, as specified in the C language (i.e., a leading 0x or 0X implies hexadecimal; otherwise, a leading 0 implies octal; otherwise, the number is interpreted as decimal)

I really want this convention to die.

numeromancer··on YouTube is banning anti-vaccine activists and blocking all anti-vaccine content
The accumulation of "chilling effects" has now become a deep-freeze.
numeromancer··on The Linux Experiments YouTube channel has been terminated
No, it was prescribed by his doctor.

Which brings up another point: some pharmacies are refusing to fill it, even when prescribed by a doctor. If you want to place the blame for people getting "horse dewormer", such pharmacies deserve part of the blame.

numeromancer··on Freenode ops take control of 700 channels
I doubt that they are stupid, so one must conclude that the purpose was to silence speach, not profit from it.
numeromancer··on Master List of Logical Fallacies (2018)
Since the author doesn't even know what a logical fallacy is, he has no reason not to continue to add whatever itches him as a "fallacy".
numeromancer··on Master List of Logical Fallacies (2018)
Like most of the entries in the article's silly list, this is not a "fallacy", formal nor informal; one does not invalidate a particular argument just by "thinking too much".
numeromancer··on Dr. Seuss books deemed offensive will be delisted from eBay
In particular, this was an analogy used by Oliver Wendell Holmes in Schenck vs United States. The act which he compared to "shouting fire in a crowded theatre" was passing out leaflets opposing the draft, ie the government's power to force people to go to a war by which the American people were not threatened.
numeromancer··on Riot is now Element
Maybe they should have called it "Protest".

I must confess that I don't know which end of a hammer to grip to drive a screw.

numeromancer··on Where you are born is more predictive of your future than any other factor

We dance round in a ring and suppose,
But the secret sits in the middle, and knows.
numeromancer··on Cross-Platform GUI Toolkit Trainwreck (2016)
I though he was being clever; "egregiously" means "in a manner consistent with being out of the herd". Bad or offensive for the goat-herd maybe, but perhaps not for the goat.
numeromancer··on The “10,000 Hours of Practice” Myth

numeromancer··on Doing One Thing, Well: The Unix Philosophy
> Another interesting idea to come out of the computing world around that time was the saying “worse is better“. Although this idea wasn’t a direct relative of the Unix philosophy, it’s certainly similar. The idea references the fact that additional features or complexity doesn’t necessarily make things better, and a “worse” project — one with fewer features and less complexity — is actually better because it will tend to be more reliable and usable.

I don't think that this is an accurate description of "worse is better". I've always taken it as being a bit (or more) tongue-in-cheek. Sort of an analogy to the saying that a lie can travel half-way around the world before the truth can get its boots on, but going on the say that a lie is therefore better because its faster.
