nullpoint420··on Replace the Retiring Windows XP with Linux (2014)
Neat! It makes sense how more kernel/userspace abstractions would add more latency.

> If you are doing music on your Linux PC, I would like to know your best ping from some MIDI instrument to the headphones.

I am not, unfortunately. I've always wanted to get into digital music production, but sadly DAWs have always been elusive to me.

nullpoint420··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
And then what? Am I supposed to be excited about this future?
nullpoint420··on When hardware goes end-of-life, companies need to open-source the software
Unless it becomes a law, and the hardware makers adapt.
nullpoint420··on Replace the Retiring Windows XP with Linux (2014)
What was unique about it? (genuinely curious, I'm coming from the Linux side of the pond)
nullpoint420··on Fixing a Buffer Overflow in Unix v4 Like It's 1973
That sounds really fun!
nullpoint420··on Show HN: Executable Markdown files with Unix pipes
Great idea, this reminds me of a Makefile! However, I do dread the cmake version of this that will nevertheless emerge in the next 10 years.
nullpoint420··on Go.sum is not a lockfile
I like your comparison about Firefox not being a great example of "good" C/C++.

I'd personally consider myself comfortable in C/C++. I've built Wayland compositors, H264 backends for live-streaming, and built Chromium occasionally for testing. Despite being a die-hard Firefox (zen) user - I still have not been able to compile Firefox! To be fair, this was pre-Firefox quantum days so I hope their SVM and build tools have improved.

nullpoint420··on An Honest Review of Go (2025)
As a fellow Fedora/GNOME user, fun fact: GNOME Web uses the same web engine as Safari! They both use Webkit, so it's not out of reach.
nullpoint420··on FediMeteo: A €4 FreeBSD VPS Became a Global Weather Service
They had me until they hit me with their "It's not just poop; it's fart." writing style
nullpoint420··on Rust GCC backend: Why and how
It shows, even as a Nix fan. The errors messages are abysmal
nullpoint420··on Principles of Slack Maximalism
We do a version of this at work. It’s the most productive I’ve felt as an engineer.
nullpoint420··on Uncloud - Tool for deploying containerised apps across servers without k8s
Talos has made this super easy in my experience.
nullpoint420··on Anthropic acquires Bun
Are you a Java dev by any chance?
nullpoint420··on Uncloud - Tool for deploying containerised apps across servers without k8s
100%. I’m really not sure why K8S has become the complexity boogeyman. I’ve seen CDK apps or docker compose files that are way more difficult to understand than the equivalent K8S manifests.
nullpoint420··on APT Rust requirement raises questions
Which is the exact use case someone would choose rust for over other languages
nullpoint420··on Windows GUI – Good, Bad and Pretty Ugly (2023)
IMO, in a good way. It has a nice feel compared to the new laggy context menus and selections
nullpoint420··on Runc breaks pods when CPU requests aren't multiples of 10
It’s crazy how they just copied and pasted it
nullpoint420··on Why Sam Altman Won't Be on the Hook for OpenAI's Spending Spree
If the bubble pops, the only upside I’m looking forward to is the cheap liquidated hardware
nullpoint420··on Code like a surgeon
Haha I was thinking the same thing. It’s super interesting how they follow the same format in every post. It’s like 3-4 paragraphs each, and each time they claim to have done something similar to the OP.
nullpoint420··on Debian Technical Committee overrides systemd change
The central problem with Linux is that it forces you to conform to everything being a files, including device and IO. I’ll stick to MSDOS where I can go about business poking memory myself to control the hardware. /s My point being is that contracts between systems can improve our lives. We take the process, file, and protected memory models for granted today. However, I’m sure people hated the migration to protected systems as well because it “didn’t let them go about their business”
nullpoint420··on Linux Capabilities Revisited
A very similar process happens in security research for macOS and iOS w/ the mach kernel. Researchers look for open mach ports that are ripe for privilege escalation.
nullpoint420··on "COBOL supports close to 90% of Fortune 500 business systems today."
You're right, I wonder how they calculated that number...
nullpoint420··on macOS Tahoe
Subjectively, it’s a bit faster than my M2 Max, but a lot faster than my 3700x desktop.
nullpoint420··on macOS Tahoe
Oops, yeah. I meant early 2026
nullpoint420··on macOS becomes iOS: Safari video controls
GNOME with DashToDock and BlurMyShell on Fedora Workstation.

Trust me, it’s macOS enough. I switched from a 16” M2 Max MBP to a HP Elitebook G1A Ultra with Fedora. It’s been a dream.

nullpoint420··on Systemd can be a cause of restrictions on daemons
Kubernetes is also this but for the cloud. CPU/Mem/Storage limits
nullpoint420··on If all the world were a monorepo
It's common to think monorepos are a way of shipping code. IMO, they're actually a mental model or model of your code and its dependencies. It's not just tooling for tooling sake, it gives you a new view into your code and its dependencies.
nullpoint420··on macOS Tahoe
The only downside is that the webcam _does not work_ unless you use Ubuntu 20.04 w/ the OEM kernel package.

The ISP driver which will enable the camera to work is in the process of being up-streamed, though. I believe they're targeting early 2025 for mainline Linux support.

nullpoint420··on macOS Tahoe
I'm typing this post on the 395+ 128gb RAM model. IMO, the keyboard is better than the one in the newest Macbook Pro. Just enough travel, and quiet enough so I don't disturb co-workers when I type.

I use it for development running Fedora Workstation. My job involves spinning up lots of containers and K8S KIND clusters.

I often reach for it instead of my 14" M4 Macbook. However, I will choose the Macbook Pro when I know I'll be away from a charger for a while. The HP, as great as it is, still has bad battery life.

nullpoint420··on Intel Foundry demonstrates first Arm-based chip on 18a node
I would say they’re smart to invest in ARM over RISC-V for the time being. It was hard enough to get the industry to support x86 and ARM64. I mean the Windows transition is still not fully complete, and they’ve been trying since Windows 8.
