nullify88··on A look inside the SNES, PS5, and Xbox controllers with CT scans
One of the things I like about the Xbox Pad when used with a PC is that when a wired headphone is plugged in to the controller, the pad appears as a new audio device and routes the audio to your headphones. I use the pads via the wireless dongle (Via virtualhere from my Shield), but may work via wired usb or bluetooth.

As much as I agree the PS5 controller is better technically, the xbox pad works better with a PC. Compatibility wise, not many games take advantage of the haptic feedback triggers.

The closest thing may well be Elasticsearch (and Kibana for visualisation), if you are fine with the Elastic license. As its document format is very flexible, it can be used to store logs, metrics, and traces. It'll be a solution inferior to specialised tools like Prometheus, Mirmir, Tempo, though. And some may be put off by the difficulty of running Elasticsearch.

Alternatives could be other general purpose databases.

Not at all.

Ditto. I've recently just completed a migration from Thanos to Mimir, and I've found that its much easier to operate and administrate. Still stuck on Elastic for logs but I'm slowly convincing developers Loki can be just as effective.

Alternatively the 3 chosen tools to ship metrics and logs (CAdvisor, promtail, node-exporter) could be replaced with an all-in-one tool such as Vector or Telegraf. If you wanted to slim it down further, Netdata accomplishes what those 3 tools and Prometheus can do in a really nice UI.

If the poster hosted those services in a single node k3s or something, the kube-prometheus-stack helm chart is able to deploy a lot of those tools easily.

nullify88··on LED lighting badly suppresses human melatonin production at night
Regarding flickering of lights supposedly Dogs and perhaps other animals are quite sensitive to them.

Not on my Galaxy S10 unfortunately. I have to resort to using Darker (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mlhg.scree...)
nullify88··on Steam now allows you to copy games over a local network to another PC
A few friends used to run https://lancache.net/ to cache the traffic between the steam cliemt and their cdn. Its nice this feature is made accessible to all but there still remains cases where lan cache maybe preferable.
nullify88··on Saving Energy: Home Server That Automatically Suspends to RAM and Wakes Up Again
Perhaps using something like keepalived on your server and Pi could be useful here. When the server is off the ip will failover to the Pi to receive server traffic to know when to power on the server. Once the request comes in and the pi powers on the server, it'll come active again and recieve the IP while the pi goes in to standby. That way the Pi doesnt need to be in the read or write path.
nullify88··on Things that improved between Elasticsearch 1 and 7
I would have expected some memory savings due to the indexes being lighter on the heap. Perhaps your workloads are more cpu heavy than memory?
nullify88··on Elastic, Loki and SigNoz – A Perf Benchmark of Open-Source Logging Platforms
Sure but in the end it boils down to whether that operational cost is worth it for the value received. Tools like Loki, are worthwhile alternatives for centralising infrastructure logs with lower operational costs.
nullify88··on Elastic, Loki and SigNoz – A Perf Benchmark of Open-Source Logging Platforms
I may have missed something, what have they done that builds on top of 8.4.3? SigNoz uses Clickhouse as its storage backend.
nullify88··on Elastic, Loki and SigNoz – A Perf Benchmark of Open-Source Logging Platforms
What about index mapping, how many primaries, how many replicas, index rollover. Is your hot tier optimised for ingest, warm tier optimised for querying, and cold tier optimised for storage? There's so much to think about to get Elasticsearch running "optimally" and to keep it that way.

It highlights the operational cost of running Elasticsearch.

nullify88··on Hampstead Heath
Perhaps before starting a walk buy a crêpe at La Crêperie de Hampstead, if the queue isn't so bad. The crêpes make excellent walking companions.

> I will say the views are unbeatable

It's hard to agree with that. There are some amazing train routes through Austria, Norway, Switzerland, Germany that keep me looking out of the window the whole way.

nullify88··on Some thoughts on Prometheus Alertmanager's alert reminders
Perhaps severity should also influence how often an alert is repeated. And during a holiday break where no one is available to react to incidents, a alert silence should be active until people are back.
nullify88··on Sim Wong Hoo has died
Creative were also pushing Environmental Audio eXtensions (EAX) on to many games and there were several versions of the techonology requiring upgrades of the soundcard until it was killed off by the release of Windows Vista when Microsoft discontinued DirectSound3D.

I believe Creative would be a very different company if EAX were still around. Their business was killed overnight.

nullify88··on Show HN: A device that only lets you type lol if you've truly laughed out loud
My group of friends started doing that after they were introduced to the Pure Pwnage web series back in 2004. Classic.
nullify88··on The 5GHz “Problem” for Wi-Fi Networks: DFS (2018)
Actually A while ago, it was discovered Atheros ath9k and ath10k based wifi cards have a spectrum scan feature. There was some work in reverse engineering the data format. I'm not sure if theres been similar developments for recent devices.

Theres also the possibility of self hosting the sync server. Though it won't necessarily mean more secure, someone may sleep better at night.
nullify88··on Gattaca draft script (1997)
I'd say its a fine suggestion. A dystopian movie portraying a futuristic, overly bureaucractic government which is highly dependent on unreliable whimsical machines paired with a hyper consumerist society.

Robocop and Running Man portray similar scifi futures / society.

nullify88··on The 5GHz “Problem” for Wi-Fi Networks: DFS (2018)
If you need a tool to diagnose situations like this, the Metageek Chanalyzer or perhaps a SDR with similar software can find such interferences.
nullify88··on Ask HN: How do you protect your eyes while coding for long hours?
I use https://github.com/AutoDarkMode/Windows-Auto-Night-Mode to automatically switch Windows and a handful of apps to dark mode / light mode depending on sunset.

I think its counter productive to have dark mode enabled all the time and I can feel my eyes strain when using it during the day. Windows, VS Code, Office 365, Edge and a handful of websites that follow the OS settings switch themes. I wish more laptops or screens had ambient light sensors and I would use that instead to trigger the theme switch. Maybe theres a way to use the webcam?

I also have a blue light filter on my glasses, and have enabled the OS blue light filter for a stronger effect when its night.

nullify88··on We upgraded an old, 3PB large, Elasticsearch cluster without downtime
I can recall the update from 5.x to 6.x gave us some headaches due to the removal of mapping types.

Luckily major updates from then have been relatively painless.

nullify88··on Nvidia PhysX 5.0
Bad Company 2 came close to this and for me was probably the most fun and thrilling Battlefield game ever.
nullify88··on Nvidia PhysX 5.0
The destruction in the trailers reminds me a lot of Bad Company 2 when it was possible to level the battlefield. Later games dumbed down the destruction or had scripted destruction sequences.
nullify88··on Wiring my home with fiber
Mikrotik has some very affordable & capable routers under $1000 with SPF or SPF+. Depends on how many ports, but they'd start with RB5009UG+S+IN which has a suggested retail price of $219.
nullify88··on Valve Employee Handbook (2012) [pdf]
I think Steam works very well. I heavily use in-homestreaming and big picture mode on my shield and it offers a nice experience that I've yet to see emulated elsewhere. I usually have a browse in the store and watch trailers on the TV before launching my game.

Remote Play is fun on games that support it.

And it runs on osx, linux and windows.

And then theres Broadcasting, chat. Its a heavily featured launcher, and offers way more than some of the alternatives out there.

nullify88··on A surprising way to lose your files on Windows
Perhaps a lot of key folders such as Documents, pictures, etc should also be readonly or denied access to prevent someone from using those temp profile folders and beliving data would persist.

Or maybe a temp profiles directory structure shouldn't be visually similar or identical to a full a profile.

Lots of low hanging fruit here.

nullify88··on GeForce RTX 40 Series
Control was a great looking game (even on my 1080 Ti), and its art direction very unique. Another top release by Remedy.
