nullify88··on Why we decided for and against Ubuntu Core
Networking specific, if using NetworkManager you can set up fallback network profiles which can kick in, in the event the primary connection fails. Could be a secondary ip, last good profile or dhcp.

With regards to bricking thousands of machines, with great power comes great responsibility. Is there no way to test the config before mass deployment? In batches or a canary deployment?

nullify88··on Why we decided for and against Ubuntu Core
I'm running a few bare metal Fedora CoreOS nodes and its been a dream with IPMI, ignition files, containers, and ansible to orchestrate it all. Havent used Flatcar Linux but I have seen the experience is similar.

No luck with Ansible pull? Sounds like it maybe ideal for your usecase. Git pulls are often incremental and compressed, and going over https may prove to be more stable than ssh over unstable connections. Since Ansible is executed locally, theres no need to have a persistent ssh connection to run your playbooks.

nullify88··on Google has turned off access to sync features for Chromium
There used to be a Python sync server used in the Chromium project that was used to test sync functionality. Someone discovered this and yanked out the relevant code to enable self hosting.

Though its since been replaced by some c++ fake server. https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromium/src.git/+/refs/he...

No but I think installing something like https://guacamole.apache.org/ could work well.
nullify88··on Signal apps DDoS'ed their own server
Explains why DNS was resolving to 127.0.0.1 during the outage. Just didn't think it could be caused by their own app.

I was pretty excited about Linux on DeX for Samsung devices since it had a capable CPU but unfortunately they discontinued it when Android 10 was released.
nullify88··on Twitter cut off the ability to read a tweet by fetching its URL with a HTTP GET
You can HTTP GET tweets again by changing your useragent to Googlebot.

curl -A "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://google.com/bot.html)" "https://twitter.com/zarfeblong/status/1339742840142872577"

Peak SEO when users are faced with more friction than Googlebots and crawlers.

Its possible to create 3rd party spotify clients by using the librespot library and there exists alternatives but I havent seen any that could replace the official application.

The only caveat is librespot only works with premium accounts.

nullify88··on Intel Launches 11th Gen Core Tiger Lake
> ended up spending the whole weekend profiling and optimizing

Some games supposedly have been optimised similarly by running parts of it on a C64 or Amiga. I cant recall the game or studio but John Carmack comes to mind.

> if you're playing with v-sync

High refresh rate monitors tend to support freesync or Gsync. For minimum latency disable vsync, enable free / gsync. Only enable vsync if your fps is above the monitors refresh rate. Alternatively you can enable a framerate limit just below the refresh rate.

I'm not able to find concrete examples of the differences between Flatcar and Fedora CoreOS aside from FCOS using rpm-ostree.

What are the differences especially regarding their spirit and philosophy?

Indeed. Official packages exist for Centos / RHEL 7 & 8 for those that need it.

For those not in the USA and with a Revolut card, you can activate a virtual card in the app, register with and then dispose of.

I did this for the free month of linkedn gold or whatever its called.

nullify88··on Dear Staging: We’re Done
When AWS releases a new instance generation, everyone flocks to them. For previous generations theres usually ample capacity to run as spot instances uninterrupted over long periods of time, giving your staging environment significant savings. I'd call that a hand me down.
nullify88··on What I learned from doing over 60 technical interviews in 30 days
Maybe I'm not thinking about it properly, but if they would discriminate based on my photo, they'll probably do so once they see me in the flesh and give me some excuse to not hire me. I'd rather not go through the wasted effort of making it to a interview and they instead ghost me so I can focus on an employer that does want me.

I believe Denmark takes coverletters seriously. They also want photo of yourself on the CV which is uncommon and often frowned upon in other countries. They want to know a bit more besides your skills and abilities.

Alternatively, nextdns.io can anonymise the EDNS client subnet so you can browse sites like archive.is without giving out a real ip address.

Perhaps cloudflare could do something similar.

nullify88··on AWS App2Container
> Yeah, we investigated that route, but on stateless containers it seemed really cumbersome?

I agree, it could be cumbersome without something to manage the secrets. I use OpenShift / k8s at work so injecting these secrets is trivial.

Unless I'm mistaken, you should be able to get working Windows Authentcation if you have Kerberos libs installed, a valid krb5.conf and a keytab or service account credentials.

It was suprisingly easy to get working.

What Windows containers offers are Group Managed Service Accounts which reduces the administrative overhead managing service accounts for Linux containers and makes them completely transparent to the container.

nullify88··on Turn on MFA Before Crooks Do It for You
AndOTP supports exporting TOTP secrets in to an encrypted file which can be reimported if you need to restore your keys. You can have the file stored in Keepass or an encrypted container for storage.

Additionally it has support for Steam and Blizzard TOTP secrets. Though they aren't straightforward to use, its nice having them on one app.

Alternatively if you dont want your keys stored in Authys cloud, you can replace Authy with AndOTP and export your keys in to an encrypted file which can be imported later back in to your phone when needed.
