nullhole··on How does fentanyl get into the US?
A country that tears up an agreement it renegotiated and signed four years earlier over spurious claims* isn't a friend and isn't to be trusted.

Sure, the dairy carveouts - which the US and Trump agreed to, again, just four years ago - are stupid artifacts of a farmers lobby group, but threatening to blow up our economy on a whim makes the US unfriendly and untrustworthy. Doing all that while the leader repeatedly says they want to annex our country by economic force and make us a state turns things from untrustworthy to adversary.

If trump wanted free trade to end, he may have gotten it, because a huge amount of the trust that underlay the north american economy is gone now. If you're cheering that on because the number of eggs your dairy farmers are able to export is under a quota, then I can only say your point of view is far too limited.

nullhole··on Trump slaps tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China
There are two possible reactions to tariffs that you think will put political pressure on you.

One is to retaliate. You only do this if you think you might win the trade war. Canada retaliated, and Canada thinks it might win the trade war.

The other is to roll over. You only do this if you don't think you'll win the trade war. That's what Columbia did.

Retaliation is a sign that the attack was strong, yes, but it's also a sign that the defence is strong.

nullhole··on Trump slaps tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China
Targets talk about retaliation if they think the tariffs have some chance of succeeding, true. Targets also talk about retaliation if they think retaliation has a chance of succeeding.

Is the bluesky account non-official?

nullhole··on The Toyota Prius transformed the auto industry
Re: being a gas-powered car: they seem fine in terms of tank size, 11 litres for a prius prime vs 13 litres for a gas corolla from the 2010s. You get better fuel efficiency, too, so your effective range is likely at least as good as a regular gasoline car.

The added complexity / part count is definitely a downside, though.

Edit: er, now I'm not sure about my second statement: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42748610

I was objecting to the characterization of the occupation of the capital city as being simply a 'protest'.
nullhole··on South Korean president declares martial law, parliament votes to lift it
>> One could argue that the invocation of the Emergencies Act in Canada (in response to protests against COVID safety measures) resembles martial law

> I'd agree with this characterisation.

I consider it an occupation of the capital. If re-establishing public order by forcing lawbreakers to leave is martial law, then so be it. It needed to happen.

There have been successful long-running protests in Ottawa in the past, including encampments outside the national legislature, without any hard response. Sticking dozens or hundreds of trucks belching diesel fuels and blaring horns in the central part of the national capital for a month, and preventing police from keeping order, goes beyond any normal protest.

> M2 and newer MacBooks have an IMU on-board, which is just a funny way of spelling microphone. Admittedly a very low quality one; I'm not sure if you could pick up understandable speech at the 1.6kHz sample rate Bosch's IMUs seem to support.

Are there examples of using IMUs to get audio data you could point to? A quick search didn't reveal anything.

> By saving the versions of the files we sent for revision (think of the main branch), I could receive the version from other parties (kind of like feature branches), turn on Word changes, paste the complete content of the original, and we could visualize the difference.

IANAL, but this was a key step for me as well. If you maintain copies of the versions sent out (and modified copies sent back), you can always get a clean diff of the copy sent out versus the copy sent back, or of an earlier version versus a subsequent revision.

The compare/combine tools in Word aren't great, but they are functional. Kind of like a local maximum, I suppose.

Suggestion for the website: ~double the height of the first video element; as it is, if the mouse is over the video, the play button / scrubber overlay will be displayed & obscure the video itself.

(the quote at the bottom of the article is excellent and apt, too :))

If you haven't already, you should try Total Commander for file navigation. It's similar to Notepad++ in that there's a long list of reasons why it's good at its task, but it's also just a very good example of what desktop Windows software can be like when it's done well.
