nullandvoid··on Tell HN: Nearly all of Evernote’s remaining staff has been laid off
This isn't trivial when you start syncing mobile (now you need an extra app, as onedrive doesn't support local), or onto a work device (where I don't want onedrive installed)

There's work arounds (for example I forgot the name, but one plugin allows you to setup onedrive to share just one folder via logging in on each device), but the syncing story wasn't great. Quite a bit of extra setup across all devices, more points of failure etc.

Hence the smart business model, of let us handle it for you for a small cost.

nullandvoid··on How to Do Great Work
I mean it's a blog, with no ability to sign in / risk leaking any PI. Adding HTTPS would only waste CPU cycles serving the page.
nullandvoid··on Did Reddit just destroy mobile browser access?
Just seems like enough time to read any search queries that match on reddit threads each day, but no reason to browse.

I just flat block it, but use workarounds when I rarely need to view Google results, may follow this same approach going forward.

nullandvoid··on Notes on Vision Pro
The primary input is eye tracking to me is really exciting, feels like the future.

I wonder what happens in games though. Will this not essentially be aimbot, looking at the target and then shoot?

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: My GPT project has become a local hit but I can't afford the bill
I think you might be projecting a bit here with the whole "nervous devs should never try anything other than write code"..

OP can totally give some basic marketing a go. The product isn't turning even creating revenue - hiring marketing now, without at-least testing the water himself would be silly.

nullandvoid··on The Epic Stack
Don't mean to add 1 more to the list, but I would say tRPC is a must have for side projects for me now where I'm not requiring a publicly facing API.

The ability to just define a function on the backend, and it be callable in my frontend, with responses automatically typed is a game changer for building fast.

For me that means https://create.t3.gg/ is the current go-to for starting a new project, but it's definitely missing some pieces this stack has.

nullandvoid··on Intel posts largest loss in its history as sales plunge
A similar priced mac > windows is ~2x the price, with no upgrade-ability options. I'm not so sure the price is right, it's expensive and they are making good money on it, but I agree does have some un-matchable features such as the battery life.

I work with both windows (with WSL) and mac OS, and there's nothing massively that sells me either way on the base OS, however I really wish tools like raycast existed in windows.

nullandvoid··on Why is OAuth still hard in 2023?
As a web dev next auth makes auth a breeze just add a provider and go (unaffiliated, just love how easy its made things).
nullandvoid··on Marginalia: DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content
I get no results at all for this seemingly simple https://search.marginalia.nu/search?query=how+to+draw+a+3d+b..., presume it's been HN hugged to death?
nullandvoid··on Community is the future of AI: Blog post and community discussion
Providing this is opt in i'm pretty OK with it, unless i'm missing something?

We trialed a private SO instance at work, and discoverability was an issue (now we have to search slack engineering channels, check notion, and check SO).

If I could quickly ask, in for example slack, a question in natural language and have it query our private SO, slack, notion etc, I would be pretty game (providing this data remains private).

nullandvoid··on Show HN: Share AI tips, tricks and ideas on Communaity.com
Thanks for visiting and for the feedback! Sorry about the experience you had, that's frustrating to hear.

I'm able to load right now in <1 second, but I have experienced sporadic issues where some "cold" queries seems to take a lot longer (~5 seconds) with planet-scale (my current DB host), I guess you may have ran into that.

I will look into this tomorrow, hopefully you can give it another try in a few days!

nullandvoid··on Twitter showed us its algorithm – what does it tell us?
There's nothing cynical about that take, it's a fact this is how YouTube (and modern social media) operate. Longer eyeball time == more ad revenue.
nullandvoid··on How does database sharding work?
Does anyone else use planet scale but find it extremely slow? I'm using planetscale trial, simple queries can easily take 3-4s "cold", and then seem to get a little faster once presumably I hit cache.
nullandvoid··on Show HN: We are building an open-source IDE powered by AI
I dislike telemetry as much as the next guy, but it is a little funny to complain about it on the post for this editor, which instead sends your entire codebase to OpenAI.

Also it's a somewhat recent update, but VSCode asks you if you trust the code author now when you open a project https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/editor/workspace-trust

nullandvoid··on List of rivers by discharge
Very cool. Now looking out into the distance imagining 100 olympic size swimming pools stacked end to end, being re-filled every second (flow of amazon), crazy.
nullandvoid··on Using ChatGPT Plugins with LLaMA
Partial information at-least gives me something to correct / some hint of the problem space to explore further.
nullandvoid··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
I think the point here is that for a group of people (I would argue most) the primary goal of a comment is to broadcast your ideas, with the language being used to convey them of secondary concern, of which this part could be delegated to AI.
nullandvoid··on Show HN: Beatbot.fm – Make Songs with AI
Couldn't you extrapolate this opinion across all current uses of AI, such as programming, text generation + image generation and argue the same things?

They are all creative, yet it seems a little silly to say we shouldn't use AI to progress in any of these areas.

I'm a music lover, and see no problem with AI generated music. It will co-exist nicely with existing forms of music, and perhaps even teach us something new.

nullandvoid··on The legacy of fy_iceworld, Counter-Strike’s divisive, popular custom map (2020)
I'm not sure that's entirely true from what I've read (at-least I really hope it's not), see https://asset.party/ looks like you can download individual parts and create mods / run on your server as you see fit.

I also don't think matchmaking will be a thing, it will be dedicated servers just like gmod & rust. I will be extremely disappointment if not, was hoping we would begin to see 1000+ player modded servers on a game more built for modding from the ground up, as rust has began to experience.

The monetization is an issue, especially since they have no doubt had a taste of it in rust (through cosmetics), so I'm wondering how they can bring this in whilst still allowing full creative freedom, which would in affect make cosmetics useless outside of official servers (which you would assume would be the majority).

nullandvoid··on The legacy of fy_iceworld, Counter-Strike’s divisive, popular custom map (2020)
It's especially painful as some of the greediest modern games released (COD franchise) used to have some of the most flexible modding tools I've ever worked with.

COD4 was incredible, could change pretty much everything about it, custom maps, modes, models you name it (here's one I worked on back in the day https://www.moddb.com/mods/cod4-minigames).

I agree Roblox is a cesspit of overly monetized P2W experiences, and minecraft from what I've heard has most its audience on micro transaction (p2w) based servers.

As I mentioned in another comment, fingers crossed s&box can bring back the glory days. Although I worry there's now been a shift in how people play, and the "why" people build things (money, versus personal gratification / fun), similar to how the same thing has happened on Youtube (most people don't seem to create for the fun of it anymore, but rather to make money).

nullandvoid··on The legacy of fy_iceworld, Counter-Strike’s divisive, popular custom map (2020)
I'm holding out for s&box hopefully being a return to community driven gaming. Garry has a proven track record of shipping games with big audiences (I've personally sunk way too many hours into both Gmod & Rust), and with source 2 as the engine it's looking pretty graphically stunning.
nullandvoid··on Anki and GPT-3
It already exists natively https://www.notion.so/product/ai

Use the "summarise" option.

nullandvoid··on System76 AMD-Only Laptop Returns
I absolutely do notice when my laptop screen defaults back to 60hz, instead of 144hz after some interactions.
nullandvoid··on NeevaAI
What do you mean, I just login once on web/mobile, set as default search engine and forget
nullandvoid··on Secondments at Zapier
100% this, as if Branson would have been in any danger at all. That's really shitty if they genuinely kicked off contestants for that reason, if that's the correct story.
nullandvoid··on ChatGPT: How many letters has the string “djsjcnnrjfkalcr”?
I think you're missing the point, that words encapsulate some elements of math. If the machine that "does words" can't actually reason about them (how many words am I speaking) then it's of interest, at-least to me.

People will always nitpick until we have perfection, just as we did (and still do) with math machines.

nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Why isn't JSON-RPC more widely adopted?
Isn't the cache situation somewhat solved via defining your RPC as either a "query" or "mutation" (for example in systems such as https://trpc.io/ > https://trpc.io/docs/caching)?
nullandvoid··on Ask HN: What are the best open source TypeScript projects I can learn from?
This could be a good place https://create.t3.gg (understanding all the code generation would be useful, but also you can deep dive into any one of the type safe libraries).
nullandvoid··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
Ah that might explain why I've never seen any payments, I'm on android and the app is free
nullandvoid··on MelonJS – a fresh and lightweight JavaScript game engine
I only have this old demo I open sourced - https://github.com/TomYeoman/2d-zombie-survival-io-demo right now (trying to crunch to finish full version)

It's using phaser on the server in this instance (which I recently ripped out, and moved to just using matter)

It's pretty ugly code, but the foundations are there, maybe it's a starting point or of some use!
