ntoshev··on Image Ad Blending Works Really, Really Well
The comparison to Google is incorrect, as I said elsewhere.

Google ads are displayed in the right column by default, and you can't simply buy your way to the search results column. Google displays the ad there only when it considers the ad as relevant as a search result, and relevance judgement is something you already trusted Google for.

Patio's ad is pretending to be curated and endorsed by the site where the ad is shown, and it is displaying a fake rating pretending to be from the users of this site. It's also way more similar to the non-ad text on that page.

ntoshev··on Google+ as your blog (using G+ API)
I hope G+ will evolve into a nice blogging tool by itself. The amount of G+ posts linked to from HN and other aggregators indicate the potential is there. I wish it were able to format code nicely and posts' urls included a title instead of a meaningless id (for SEO as well as humans).
ntoshev··on Node.js has jumped the shark
This only proves that many in node.js community and some trolls outside of it don't really understand programming at the event level, BUT insist on writing about it.

First, you shouldn't judge anything by the worst of its kind.

Second, why I keep seeing related stories piling one misunderstanding on top of another on Hacker News?

ntoshev··on Windows Phone does transmit location information without user consent
I agree, they are sending more info than they need to, in the same way Apple didn't need to store these data for so long or back them up on a computer. In both cases I don't think there is malice, but it's good people actually check what is going on and force vendors to take privacy seriously.
ntoshev··on UTorrent.com compromised, malware added to installer
I installed it recently and even though I tried being careful not to install anything unnecessary, it tricked me into it! There was a checkbox saying something like "accept terms and conditions and install Bing toolbar", and I only readbthe beginning and left it checked as Eulas have conditioned me (of course I had accepted terms and conditions of utorrent before that).
ntoshev··on Google to Settle with U.S. Government for $500 Million
Humans are often worse than algorithms. But human mistakes (e.g. in medical practice) are socially acceptable, machine mistakes are not.
ntoshev··on IPython 0.11 - Innovation in iPython
Other good Python consoles are DreamPie and bpython.
ntoshev··on Asana tech talk: rethinking web app development
It doesn't really - I saw it on an iPad.
ntoshev··on Poll: Do you visit the 'new' section of Hacker News?
http://news.ycombinator.com/newest

The submissions go there first, and bubble up to HN main page only if they get enough upvotes.

This kind of question is pretty useless as a poll, if pg shows actual statistics I think it would be pretty far off.

ntoshev··on NoSQL is a Premature Optimization
This is not a very useful statement, because there is no clear-cut border between relational and non relational data. You can map everything to a relational schema and to most nosql models.
ntoshev··on The Problem With Silicon Valley Is Itself
For the startups to be less of a commodity, perhaps you could look for some sort of unique perspective on the world that founders should have. It seems Google founders had a lot of that. This may not help with the returns though; maybe more money are there to be made from commodity startups than truly disruptive ones.
ntoshev··on Show HN: HN Trends - like Google Trends, but for Hacker News
Awesome work!

Can you normalize it against total text volume? Number of mentions always goes up with time as HN grows, % of posts mentioning will be a better measure of mindshare.

ntoshev··on Protolol Jokes
I thought this would be about social protocols. Do you have some of these?
ntoshev··on Y Combinator’s Paul Graham: We’re Looking For People Like Us
Yeah, Google and the other 20 search companies at the time. I don't think this became an issue before search became reasonably good, when they didn't have a choice but follow through.

I also think Google broke and still breaks rules, just your example is not very good. Interesting that this reply of yours is upvoted over paul, pg and tlb in this thread.

ntoshev··on The Next 10 Years Will Be Great For Both Founders And VCs
I received spam from you on my email, scraped from HN. Please don't do that.
ntoshev··on Understanding the code inside Tornado, the asynchronous web server
Tornado devs recommend using blocking mysql drivers and disk I/O. These operations have relatively low and predictable latencies. You can run more Tornado processes than the number of cores is if CPU is underutilized.
ntoshev··on Wikileaks Founder: Facebook is the most appalling spy machine ever invented
Do you have any link describing this backdoor and the procedures to use it (grandparent's claim "without judicial oversight" is the critical bit here)? Schneier just mentions it without reference.
ntoshev··on Redis and Scripting
I didn't exactly mean a Redis server implemented in Python instead of C... It could be that, but speaking application-specific DSL instead of generic data structure DSL.
ntoshev··on Redis and Scripting
Redis is i/o bound, while this approach eliminates i/o and copying data from Redis to the client ;)

Not sure about memory efficiency. You can use __slots__ in Python or custom data structures (e.g. blist) if you have specific needs.

ntoshev··on YouTube Founders Acquire Delicious From Yahoo
I have this pet hypothesis that matching delicious tags with actual words found on the web pages will make for a killer query expansion algorithm...
ntoshev··on Ask PG: have you seen a change in the cumulative comment karma?
This result suggests that a limit of +4 displayed points would be equivalent to the current situation, while leaving more visual guidance about how valuable a comment is perceived to be. If you chose to do that, maybe you should color-code it instead of displaying a number, though.

FWIW: I like the comments with hidden scores better than before.

ntoshev··on A better way to teach math
I was also wondering recently why illiteracy carries social stigma, while innumeracy does not. The article asserts everyone just considers math ability to be innate, but I'm not sure this is a good explanation.

Our daily life seems to rely on literacy much more than it relies on numeracy. You can only know how to add and subtract (mostly money) and you will still function all right in your daily life and a great variety of jobs. Not so much if you have difficulty reading. This seems to be slowly changing in the future, but if you consider the learning curve, mathematics has a much steeper one compared to reading and writing well.

Does anyone have a better explanation?

ntoshev··on Larry Page and Wall Street: Who needs who?
> Stock price only starts to matter when a company needs access to more cash

I used to think that too, but it's not true. Stock price matters for the existing shareholders, including founders and employees, who may need to cash out for personal reasons. The stock price is an instrument to align the interests of many.

ntoshev··on What was the code quality of the initial version of Google?
Scaling a website and scaling a search engine are two very different things. Python websites are OK, Python search engines... well: http://whoosh.ca/blog/fools_errand
ntoshev··on How a 19-Year-Old Raised $5 Million to Revolutionize Search
Python:

max((s[start:end] for start in xrange(len(s)) for end in xrange(start, len(s)) if s[start:end]==s[start:end][::-1]), key=len)

ntoshev··on Tornado 1.2
node.js is asynchronous from the ground up, Tornado is generally synchronous with the exception of http client and server. So, Tornado is less pure, but you can use any of the Python libraries as they are. Node.js is pure, even disk i/o is asynchronous, but there are much fewer libraries.

Tornado also wraps Facebook API and has authentication with Facebook, Google, Twitter and everyone else.

ntoshev··on The Reason The Rich & Famous Commit Suicide
Why do you care if you have mental illness or not? Either way, you have a bit different perspective on the world from everyone else, drugs could make you feel better, etc. Mental illness is just a label.

Try talking to your close friends about how the world is and how you'd like it to be (no need to get into details about leaving it). Maybe you'll find you can do something about it, albeit small.

ntoshev··on Quora Blocks Startup Search Engines
> And does that mean that you store those pages in your database and use your own ranking algorithm, or are you using their ranked results for a query and then rearranging them on the fly?

I have looked at those search APIs and they don't let you write your own ranking formula. They just give you back 10-20-30 top results. There is no info on term frequency, inverted document frequency, pagerank or any other component of a decent ranking formula. So you can rank yourself the pages from your own crawls, but you can't merge this nicely with the API results.

If I were Garbiel, I would merge them in some crude way basically assuming my results are better, and add those URLs to the list for my crawler. The top URLs for all one and two word queries aren't that many.

ntoshev··on Eric Schmidt: On April 4th I Will Step Down, Larry Page to be CEO
I like the image of the self-driving car he chose as an illustration of who drives Google.
ntoshev··on Three Design Hacks from Apple
It depends. There are two layouts for Bulgarian keyboards - "Standard" and "Phonetic", and I believe phonetic is more commonly used. With iOS 4.0 the phonetic layout disappeared, to be back in 4.1.
