ntide··on Ask HN: Where do you find reliable information on diet?
There is only 1 book you need, my friend: https://pedietbook.com/

Ted Naiman (the author) is a practicing medical doctor, and there are loads of podcasts of him discussing his protein-to-energy ratio approach to dieting.

ntide··on Ask HN: What are you currently building?
Have you seen https://www.madewithmischief.com/ ?
ntide··on Show HN: I spent 6 years making a cool free game
You should maybe look into distributing this on itch.io (http://itch.io), which handles hosting, promotion, and pricing for you.
ntide··on An iOS Developer on React Native
Do they not have MVC in iOS land? This isn't solely a React benefit, most every JS framework has it.

Regardless, excellent post!

ntide··on Ask HN: Node.js vs. Go – which tech stack has higher freelance demand?
Interesting...but could it be that Go is a super generic term? It's surprising that Go has more jobs than Python, for example:

ntide··on Ask HN: Does anyone else have a hard time coming up with ideas for projects?
Someone at work writes a lot of Python for doing this already - this is a great idea.
ntide··on Ask HN: Does anyone else have a hard time coming up with ideas for projects?
Hmm, that is very wise. I've never thought about things that way.

My motivation for projects has always been kinda screwy. On the one hand, I want to make an income on my side projects in order to someday move away from my rather boring job. On the other hand, I want to make fun and personal things like games, that aren't necessarily things that people would pay for. Most of the project ideas in my list reflect this split of motivation.

Wow, thanks for the insight. :)

Neat idea, reminds me of Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble.
ntide··on Notch, WebGL, Dart, and ramping up quickly
You know, I read Hacker News less and less precisely because the posts are so damn negative. For those debating whether Notch is good or bad, I suggest reading every article from programming in the 21st century.[1]

ntide··on Sublime Text 3 Public Beta
Try this: http://yannesposito.com/Scratch/en/blog/Learn-Vim-Progressiv...

This is how I learned Vim, so as far as I know it's the best resource out there.

ntide··on The Three Hour Hackathon to Cure Facebook Addiction
You want to cure Facebook addiction?

Then delete your Facebook! I did it a year ago and I've never looked back.

ntide··on The Time Suck Economy
By Drew's standards, Hacker News is yet another time suck. I don't mean to be incendiary, but it's debatable whether knowledge of Aaron Swartz's death has any actionable impact on my life.

I do agree with his thoughts on smartphones. While some smartphone apps are genuinely useful (e.g. workout apps, weather widgets, your smartphone's camera), there is a whole class of apps out there that facilitate mindless consumption. Every mobile game and social media app falls into this category.

Going off on a tangent, I haven't played a single, good mobile game (i.e. one that isn't a mindless time waster). There isn't a single mobile game in existence that naturally ties in with the hardware, the way that trading Pokemon was a natural fit for the Game Boy. I really wish there were these types of experiences on smartphones, because Pokemon was a significant slice of culture.

ntide··on Engineers suck at finding the right jobs
What would you say to a college student who's just starting out?
ntide··on Ask HN: Where should I study abroad?
Not at all! I've lived in the same state for my entire life, and I'm open to suggestions from those of you that are more well-traveled. :)
ntide··on Show HN: I spent two years working on an HTML5 game. I finally released it
Looks amazing, I bought a copy. :)
ntide··on Ask HN: What calendar app(s) do you use?
Why not Google Calendar?
ntide··on Best Open Python Books
I would disagree. I personally used Dive Into Python to learn Python. If you know programming, Dive Into Python is a great Python primer. Besides, reading is useless. You want to write code as soon as possible.
ntide··on Best Open Python Books
Paul McCartney does programming? Woah.
ntide··on What music do you listen to while coding?
Nothing beats the Breaking Bad Cooking Meth Soundtrack.

ntide··on Ask HN: Anyone in a need of a django guru?
What did you do to get started (with Django)? I understand nothing beats hard-earned experience, but were there any tutorials or books that stood out in particular?

I'm saying this as a complete newbie to web development.

ntide··on Programming's Impact on Personality
Great post. Though I'd say that programming DOES make you less fun. Because after having programmed for awhile, you eventually learn that you can't bullshit a compiler. And that immunity to bullshit makes you immune to shitty friends who spew bullshit. So programming makes you less fun to those people. :D

But of course, any hobby changes you on the inside. I picked up running last December, and it's taught me the value of "one step at a time" and "focus on what's in front of you, not the end goal." I think everyone needs a serious hobby that teaches these essential life metaphors.

ntide··on Believe you can change
This article precisely explains what John Carmack was like as a kid.
