nrj··on Is the world ready for the waterless urinal?
They have these in the Adobe offices. They are all about being "green". Anyways, something never set quite right with me about them... something about the piss just sitting there, not being washed away. Not that regular urinals are clean either.
nrj··on One click uploads to Amazon S3 for Mac
Hello HN,

I have been working hard on this little side project and last time I posted here I got some great feedback. I wanted to share with you an update that I just released which now allows you to upload to Amazon S3 Buckets from your Finder context menu!

Enjoy. Nick

nrj··on Ask HN: How do I become a consultant?
Start advertising yourself as a consultant, get some business cards, go to conferences, reach out to people you've worked with in the past, network! If all else fails, there are always craigslist gigs.

I would avoid consulting firms, as in my experience employees of consulting firms generally get the shaft. Especially if you're new to the game and don't realize that clients are paying the firm 250$/hr for your time while they turn around and pay you 40$/hr. You are much better off as a freelancer if you want to get a decent hourly rate.

nrj··on Ask HN: What's the best way to use a 30" monitor?
Porn. Lots of it.
nrj··on Betting on the Engineers
Damnit. When I click on Dilbert links, I want to be entertained. The world is too depressing to read a serious blog entry from such a comedic genius.
nrj··on Ask HN: How long before you called yourself a programmer?
I would recommend you hit up Craigslist and start responding to ads under Computer->Gigs. You can often find small and simple coding projects. That's how I got started building up my resume after I graduated.
nrj··on DuckDuckGo Searches Are Not Anonymous
I haven't tested this out, but I don't see why something like this wouldn't work...

<?php

   header("Location: the-result.com");

   header("Referer: ");
?>
nrj··on DuckDuckGo Searches Are Not Anonymous
One fix is to not directly send the users to the result page. Instead link to a redirect script on the ddg servers i.e, duckduckgo.com/goto.php?link=http://search-result.com/ and then have goto.php remove the REFERER from the request headers.
nrj··on OneWay 0.5.2 Released – Thank you, Hacker News
Yes. This is definitely in the works for the next release. Under the hood I am using libcurl which makes implementing public key auth pretty painless.
nrj··on OneWay 0.5.2 Released – Thank you, Hacker News
Yea, that would be a pretty good feature. I'm thinking a preference pane that allows to enable something like this would be easy. I'm also thinking of adding a "rsync to ..." option that you can enable as well.
nrj··on OneWay 0.5.2 Released – Thank you, Hacker News
If you've already downloaded the application, simply launch it and under the "OneWay" menu, choose "Check for Updates". You should be prompted to install 0.5.2 - Thanks!
nrj··on Ask HN: Review My App - heyhub.com
Nice looking site. My only thoughts are on the name. For something as specific as pet services, I think HeyHub is a very general name and I probably wouldn't remember it as a pet service website. Just my 2 cents.
nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
Nice, I like it. A couple friends have pointed out some design oddities.. definitely where my skills are lacking.
nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
>> Right click on an item in the list and have an option to 'Copy URL'?

This is precisely what I was thinking, but how does this work if you have uploaded a folder containing 100 files? Or 100 individual files. I really would like to implement this feature I'm just not sure the best way to deal with multi-file uploads.

nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
Yea, I have been thinking about how to do this right. It would be easy to allow a user to optionally add a "Public Base URL" for a bookmark that you upload to, but like you said, that would really only work if you are uploading 1 file.

Definitely open to suggestions on this one.

nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
Be sure to "Check for Updates" in the "OneWay" menu. Amazon S3, and SCP will be coming soon.
nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
I use it for this as well. I've also been thinking about adding support for a one-directional rsync.
nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
Of course! :)
nrj··on Ask HN: Please review my Mac App
Hello HN,

In my limited spare time I have been working on a small side project, it is an application for Mac OS X called OneWay. To sum it up, it is a contextual FTP, SFTP uploader (upload only) that integrates into the Finder's Context Menu. It allows you to upload any files and folders in your Finder simply by selecting them and right-clicking. You can also easily add frequently used locations to your context menu for future use! And You don't even need the application open!

Basically my goal was to create the easiest possible uploading solution that is light-weight and doesn't require me to open a Terminal. While applications like Cyberduck and Transmit are great, they really offer way more functionality than I need. I found that 90% of the time when I use FTP/SFTP I am only uploading, and secondly I find that I am often uploading to the same places (host, directory).

Of course, there are bugs... But how will I find them if I don't push it out the door already! With that said here are some helpful things to keep in mind.

#10.5 (Leopard) Users#

Unfortunately there are a few known issues for you. Firstly, it is out of my control but your contextual menu items will be added to your Finder under the "More -> OneWay" menu. If you do NOT see them there at all for some reason, please try restarting your Finder. You can do this by opening a Terminal, and typing `killall Finder`.

#10.6 (Snow Leopard) Users#

Your contextual menu items will live in the top level of your Finder menu! Though please note that in order to SEE the menu items you MUST have at least 1 file or folder selected. Also note, that if you add enough menu items, OSX will group them all under the "Services" menu instead of in the top level.

Thanks for checking out my app guys. Please post any feedback or bugs that you find.

nrj··on Costly IRS 1099 Mandate Slipped into Health Bill
I am an independent contractor, and I probably spend more than 600$ at Starbucks in a full year.
nrj··on Ask HN: Need some tax advice...
The thing is I feel sort of helpless without a CPA. I recently (beginning of this year) bought Quickbooks and I have been keeping track of all the books myself. Logging all transactions, income, expenses, keeping receipts etc. So I feel like this is good step in becoming independent. I paid in a bunch of my debt (about 20k) and filed for a 6 month extension. I'd rather not pay this guy any more money to prepare my return. Do you know any online resources that might help me get this sorted out?
nrj··on Ask HN: Need some tax advice...
The problem is he severely underestimated my tax estimates.
