nphase··on A Depressive Journey With MongoDB
26 webservers and only two mongodb instances? Seems stacked.. Why not set up more instances and split the load across them (sharding, splitting collections across replica sets, etc) or similar?

Also - big question for me: were you using a ridiculously old version of mongo? I have yet to run into anyone who is on 2.0 or 1.8 and is still running master/slave (as opposed to replica sets). Sounds like your writes weren't working when you moved to replica sets because your client wasn't properly configured.

nphase··on This Photograph Is Not Free
Kind of. Let's not forget that most wedding photographers explicitly own the rights to the photos they take of your wedding, and have print and digital packages they explicitly push both to you and to your friends and family as part of their offering. Some wedding photographers don't even offer the digital pictures as part of their base packages.

Why bother negotiating options at all if what you end up with is a fraction of what you negotiated for to begin with? If the company isn't willing to honor the agreement, it shouldn't offer it at all.

Future options are precisely what was on the table when negotiating and subsequently accepted an offer form a startup.

nphase··on MongoDB and Riak, In Context (and an apology)
"Unfortunately, I am not at liberty to share the results, nor do I think it would be constructive to this discussion."

- I don't understand this mindset. Forgive me for being naive, but if we're to "toast to the challenges and all become stronger, more proficient, and more successful as a result," then why don't we share these edge cases and fix them?

nphase··on Forced Exercise's Effects on the Brain
I'm by no means an expert, but from my reading of body hacking and dieting etc, it seems that higher intensity workouts lead to increased cortisol release, a hormone released in response to stress. I'm not sure if this is the hormone they're referencing though, because IIRC extended periods of elevated cortisol levels are associated with Parksinson's/Alzheimers...

nphase··on Oracle on why you shouldn't use NOSQL (PDF)
I'm currently sitting at 2 million users generating data, and that number has grown from 1 million users in the last month and a half (100% growth in under two months).

I suppose I should've clarified that sooner. Having had some experience scaling MySQL at growing businesses, I am now trying to anticipate an explosion of analytics requirements alongside an explosion of user growth and activity caused by feature growth.

nphase··on Oracle on why you shouldn't use NOSQL (PDF)
"While in theory, NoSQL databases can be deployed on hundreds or thousands of machines, in practice the deployments are much smaller and can typically easily fit within a single Oracle database with fewer and more reliable components. The largest production Cassandra cluster has over 100 TB of data in over 150 machines."

I find this interesting. I wonder if there any real TCO comparisons have been done to this point.

Sure, this paper is full of FUD. But it does raise a valid question for me: What's the difference between paying for Oracle and paying for MySQL, Datastax, or Cloudera support/enterprise to get the added features needed to run my business and keep away from reinventing the wheel?

nphase··on MySQL Query Analyzer and PHP
More interesting (to me, at least) than the query analyzer and debug tracing (to a proprietary tool which costs money) is the mysqlnd_ms plugin, that can seems to be able to gracefully handle switching between multiple mysql connections to simplify query routing for master/slave or load balancing setups. Handling that on the driver level (I'm already a big fan of mysqlnd async) could help you ease your code into a replicated environment.

nphase··on Walk Away From Your Computer. Seriously.
I have lost track the number of times where my coworkers and I will be pounding our heads on our desks for hours to find a solution to a problem, only to find the solution in the middle of a bathroom break.

Walking away is critical to any creative process.

nphase··on New Commercial Extensions for MySQL Enterprise Edition
This is frustrating to me. Thread pool has been a requested feature for quite a long time, and I'm sad to see it's not being contributed to the community edition. Wasn't it supposed to be a part of MySQL 6.0 and now MariaDB?
nphase··on The Costs of Bookmarking
I can second this. I hosted CentSports (a recently acquired side project) (~1mm userbase, ~500gb dataset) in a full cabinet for under $1100/mo. At it's peak we did about 80 million pageviews per month on a heavily IO-constrained, heavily active OLTP workload (...not nearly as impressive as mmaunder's!)

By the time the doors closed, we had about 16 RU's filled, IIRC. The beefiest DB box had 64gb of RAM in it, which as it turns out is a $1200 one-time upgrade for colo vs $1500/mo extra on your dedicated (quick price checks on newegg and softlayer, I'm sure both numbers can come down).

Yes, making the leap into colo can seem like a big up front cost, but over time these costs do work in your favor. Yes, there is a support cost involved (either with remote hands or you getting up at 3am and replacing that disk yourself). But If your workload and dataset are such that you don't necessarily require a new box spun up in less than 24 hours, the savings could be quite great for you.
