np_tedious··on Improving large monorepo performance on GitHub
Mercurial didn't exactly "care" either, they were just more open to outside contributions along these lines
np_tedious··on Repealing Section 230 won’t do what anyone wants
If you start calling "a thing that fascists also did" simply "fascist" then you're watering down the term quite a bit. It could extend far further than most people would find reasonable
np_tedious··on Kalman Filter
Arguably the sun is also a compiler
np_tedious··on What’s Wrong with “Multiplication Is Repeated Addition”? (2008)
Still don't see the difference.

Density times volume is mass. Volume times density is mass. Distance times force is work/energy...

"5 times I will connect 12 apples"

np_tedious··on Rookie coding mistake prior to Gab hack came from site’s CTO
Idk when this guy worked there, but today a Facebook product dev likely doesn't get a chance to make a mistake like this. Which is good. But it also means people who've only worked there can have some really surprising gaps
np_tedious··on Notes on the Slate Star Codex Controversy
All of this is true, but I do think this "outing" still means something.

My hackernews account here is "anonymous", but not carefully so. I'm sure any dedicated reporter could figure out who I am (I have no pretensions that I would ever merit attention like this). Still, if one decided to out me after I asked them not to AND it didn't even really advance the story, I would indeed feel violated. And I'm not a therapist with patients to consider, I'm an IC FAANG grunt.

np_tedious··on Show HN: Call a Dev – Pay Stack Overflow users $1/min for live programming help
Stack Overflow rep/profile is probably a decent start
np_tedious··on Why Flutter is overtaking React Native
This is far more convincing than anything in the article
np_tedious··on The spot price for electricity in Texas is currently about $9000 per MW-hr
Parent said only that it was the daily cost for their apartment. No numbers or units
np_tedious··on Learn Functional Programming Visually
Cool game!

Headline here might be a little grandiose. Author has "A puzzle game inspired by functional programming" on the project's Github. I find this more apt

np_tedious··on Clubhouse user IDs, Chatroom IDs are transmitted in plaintext over the internet
I think it's UDP. Probably for the audio
np_tedious··on Why Flutter is overtaking React Native
> According to Google Trends search results from January 2020 to January 2021, comparing search results on Google between Flutter and React Native shows Flutter to be the most searched term.

"flutter" is a word. In English. This seems a silly comparison. The above statement is accompanied by an image which indeed shows flutter to exceed react native, but with no obvious trend

np_tedious··on 20% of requests for Wikimedia Commons are for one image of a flower
I have, and this is is still fascinating. Got any more links you'd suggest?
np_tedious··on Science fiction hasn’t prepared us to imagine machine learning
They also likely need a lot of training data and compute resources
np_tedious··on A German man is keeping $60M in Bitcoin from police
> ensured the man cannot access [his] largesse

How? Sounds like his address / public key is known but only he (if anyone) as the private key. What steps from an authority, besides an exogenous threat like being charged again is any balance moves, could they take?

np_tedious··on Hedge fund Melvin sustains 53% loss after Reddit onslaught
You're not the only one thinking this. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-01-29/reddit...
np_tedious··on Why Robinhood disabled buys but not sells
https://twitter.com/Camp4/status/1355701648182501378?s=19 presents an argument about how they should have and how it might've been done well
np_tedious··on Proof of X
Yes we do
np_tedious··on An experiment in teaching a language without relying on translation
Idk about this. I found myself translating in my head anyway
np_tedious··on Could giant SPACs be next?
My understanding is that a SPAC is more or less a corporation/fund that exists solely for the aim of doing a (or multiple?) reverse merger
np_tedious··on Retiring Tucows Downloads
If it's unidirectional (user only downloads) and the files aren't crazy big, then given today's connection speeds and reliability I would say no not really.
np_tedious··on We are sending more foster kids to prison than to college
Other commenter has good points too, but I primarily meant that there are still many many people (and entire rural towns!) making and dependent on the money involved. Even if the running of the prisons is "public".
np_tedious··on Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C: study from 2018
Yes of course. It's a matter of efficiency. Certainly they aren't doing so optimally.

I'm not even trying to make any claims on magnitude. Just saying it's pretty clear if shipping/housing gold changes to bitcoin, if some amount of finance activity changes to Ethereum or some kind of DeFi, then this is not purely additive. It's replacing, and the article doesn't account for this

np_tedious··on We are sending more foster kids to prison than to college
Private prisons are a problem, but they are also sort of an overemphasized canard. They house under 10% of the prison population, and for several of the larger states it's none at all.

American state run prisons and their surrounding ecosystem of courts, municipal govts, vendors, etc have much of the perverse incentives and a far larger overall footprint

np_tedious··on Bitcoin emissions alone could push global warming above 2°C: study from 2018
Employing thousands of human beings and computers and offices for processing simple transactions is wasteful too. Both using a bank (with outdated system) and "being your own bank" cost energy
np_tedious··on That's not how 2FA works
> persistent access

Given a successful login and session, perhaps on some sites this is enough for passwords reassign via some backend (likely intended for mobile apps) API?

np_tedious··on North Dakota Bill Would Let Censored Citizens Sue Facebook, Twitter
Yes this is about right. 230 allows moderation, but does not obligate it. Pretty much leaves full discretion to the platform and moderating one thing is not a commitment to moderate anything else.

One is the key examples that highlighted the need for this was Jordan "Wolf of Wall Street" Belfour's company suing Prodigy for allowing users to talk negatively about it on message boards.... and winning! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stratton_Oakmont,_Inc._v._Pr...

np_tedious··on Toxic positivity does more harm than good
Not to downplay the mental harm discussed in the article, but the more mundane issue you touch on here is what gets to me.

With this constant demonstration of happiness / positivity, it's extremely difficult to get a real, honest read on something. Not everything you ate was incredible, not everywhere you went was perfect. In fact, 50% of them were below average! I wish more people would quit performing and give the real scoop. But that tends to only happen in pretty tight circles now. I noticed this effect even in a group chat of close friends once it grew from 5 to 8.

np_tedious··on Facebook will pay more than $300 each to 1.6M Illinois users in settlement
Yes important point, but also probably not 5 years of active work. I'm sure they were doing other things, performing some steps and then waiting for others to act, etc. You don't "work" 8 hours to make a crockpot stew
np_tedious··on Big Tech Has Helped Trash America
Old media are the main one's "losing to tech". So we've got some incentives for articles like this
