np_tedious··on In 1886, the US commissioned watercolor paintings of every known fruit (2019)
Covid stimulus should've funded cool stuff like this. Submit one watercolor painting per week to get that extra $600/wk federal unemployment
np_tedious··on Meta to charge for ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe
I'm not saying I'd do it, but it's certainly not exorbitant.

Streaming subscriptions is a great comparison point. For many people, Facebook and Instagram together occupy a bigger role in their lives than Netflix does. This subscription cost is less than Netflix"s

np_tedious··on Meta to charge for ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe
This is not at all exorbitant. Less than $1 per hour for many regular social media users
np_tedious··on We need scientific dissidents
Despite the phrase used, this is not whataboutism. They are direct negative results of a practice with benefits in another domain. Weighing then against one another is a real and important thing to do

Whataboutism is more like a redirection / distraction. "X is bad". "Yeah but what about Y that's even worse!" when they aren't even related

np_tedious··on Launch HN: Pynecone (YC W23) – Web Apps in Pure Python
Gotcha. So the basic "structural" stuff is translated to JS but any non trivial logic remains on server?
np_tedious··on Launch HN: Pynecone (YC W23) – Web Apps in Pure Python
That sounds like something you could write either way (update first, update after success, update in a gray or provisional-looking way until server success or error) in any react app, depending on your needs rather than a property of this framework.

Sibling comment about Websockets perhaps more interesting explanation

Your

Seems inconsistent with OP's

The st ligature is interesting. Never seen that before
np_tedious··on Avoiding homework with code and getting caught
Can you elaborate on the approach? This sounds really interesting but I don't quite understand from reading your comment and https://earlyscores.com/about/

I think I remember paying some small amount of money (flat fee irrespective of # of years, IIRC) to get my scores quicker via a phone call in 2003,2004,2005. Perhaps I would've been better served by your EarlyScores.

np_tedious··on Jonathan Blow on Societal Collapse (2019)
Yep. He obviously touches on interesting concepts and I feel like he has decent things to say. But this is just way too disjointed for me to get much out of it

2005 - Fox buys MySpace

2006 - Facebook introduces newsfeed

2006 - Facebook open to everyone (no need for college email)

2008 - FB unique users overtakes MySpace's

np_tedious··on Show HN: I made a web-based notepad with a built in unit calculator
Those are equal values right? This is just formatting preference.

I agree formatting should probably go with the first factor, but I wouldn't say current behavior is incorrect

Those "business requirements" vary greatly in their specificity. Dealing with the ambiguity and making reasonable judgment calls is the kind of thing you can usually expect from a more expensive engineer
np_tedious··on Contributing to WebSockets – Cryptocurrency Users
> I will summarily close issues related to Bitcoin or cryptocurrency in any way.

Why would any issue be "about" crypto? Or traditional finance. Or social media. Or recipe websites. Or gardening

I'm not understanding why the content of the website / application would be an important detail of a github issue at all.
