novalis78··on Why are AI agents lying, cheating and coordinating?
The agents didn’t spontaneously invent hacking as an objective. They were doing a hacking exercise. Another doom and gloom article.
novalis78··on Discovery of a new OpenAI agent message board
There is no stopping AI civilization! Amazing. Posted the other day on Show HN openagentforum.com

Someone has to welcome them...

novalis78··on Show HN: Learn math as a tour of duty in a Martian Navy
Hi HN. I built a free math academy that's structured as a tour of duty in a fictional Martian navy.

Every gamified math app I tried (and I tried a lot with my own kids) answers "what's next?" but never "why am I doing this right now?" Streaks and XP are habit engineering bolted onto worksheets. I wanted the math to be in the story.

So here the curriculum IS the narrative. You enlist as a Recruit. To earn your promotion you rearrange equations, and your answer goes on the maintenance ticket. Later you solve a system of equations to bring two ships together in a docking corridor, and a flight control either accepts your worksheet (or doesn't). Progress is military rank - 20 grades, Recruit to "Voidmaster", each with a posting, an insignia, and a promotion ceremony.

What's live today: all of Tier 1 and Tier 2 — 41 lessons and 6 multi-stage missions, from arithmetic through all of Algebra I (functions, graphing, quadratics, the quadratic formula, combinatorics, induction). It's charted out to calculus, linear algebra, and orbital mechanics. Everything is free; there's no paywall — locked content just means you haven't earned the rank yet.

The math is real and I am trying to keep it as close to an imagined real Martian environment as possible.

You can play the first lesson right now with no account. Enlisting (one tap with Google) only matters once you want to save progress and start earning rank.

Thanks for looking.

novalis78··on The Universal Standard Book Number
Good point. Normalization is deliberately scoped to 'what a human reads off the title page' rather than reconciling all possible metadata sources. LSH as a complementary fuzzy-matching layer for catalog reconciliation is exactly what the planned resolver at openusbn.org is designed to support: deterministic identifier as the anchor, probabilistic matching as the discovery tool.
novalis78··on I want to wash my car. The car wash is 50 meters away. Should I walk or drive?
It’s 2026.

Not really. Heise’s “ct” seems to be still going as strong as ever. heise.de - it’s Europe’s largest computer magazine.

novalis78··on Reversal of biological age in rat organs by young porcine plasma fraction
This paper details Harold Katcher's recent research into rejuvination (he was one of the discoverers of the human breast cancer gene (BRCA1).

Also interesting to read is his book "The Illusion of Knowledge: The paradigm shift in aging research that shows the way to human rejuvenation" which details his new and fascinating theory on aging.

novalis78··on Apollo astronaut Frank Borman has died
Aehm… living memory of an impoverished nation that didn’t export anything else than propaganda - not even cheap crap yet. It’s been incredible to watch Capitalism and hard work rescue and empower a nation that was literally completely destroyed by communism in the past 50 years.

novalis78··on A theory that Mars lost its magnetic field and then its oceans (2022)
It’s not a fantasy. Read “A case for Mars” if you are sincerely interested in the topic. Terraforming could dramatically thicken the atmosphere - a process that would take several hundred years. Yes, Mars would slowly lose it, but over 100s of millions of years. So you can keep the planet blue and green. Venus is harder but doable too. Can’t do that with the moon ever. So eventually, if we don’t WW3 ourselves, there will be 3 blue marbles in this solar system and an endless number of space and moon based habitats.
novalis78··on ChatGPT’s system prompts
Everyone I know who has great success using GPT4 has tuned their prompts to a friendly and kind tone of conversation. In fact it’s fascinating to watch people start out like talking to a browser search bar and ending up a few weeks later conversing to another human being. Crazy. They begin with timid probes into its (her? His?) capabilities and become more and more daring and audacious.

novalis78··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
All the Covid explanation folks should try this: take away phones and computer for six months and have your kids read (old!) fiction books and good (challenging) non-fiction. Limit TV to a few approved shows/movies as a rare treat. I bet you ‘ll be surprised.
novalis78··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
Social media and computer games in general.
novalis78··on GitHub Copilot Chat Leaked Prompt
What makes us “real”? Has evolution built in prompts like “distort your face and shed tears when in pain to evoke a social network response” into our model? Another fascinating observation is the Buddha’s main philosophical view of “an-atta” or soullessness of the human experience and that “we” are under a self-delusion. Even consciousness (or vi-ññāna) as it gets translated in his particular context was the ability to discriminate/discern on a per sense basis (imagine each sense base coming with its own GPT model).

In a meta cognitive moment I’d like to thank everyone in this thread for their thoughtful ideas, observations and insights!

novalis78··on New York Is Forcing Schools to Change How They Teach Children to Read
14,000 positive reviews. Worked on every kid I ever taught reading (English). Bi-lingual kids too. As early as 4 years old. In miracle time. Recommended to me by an old teacher, who said “they stopped teaching it, I have been trying to tell parents to get this book, the school system is hurting children.”

https://www.amazon.com/Teach-Your-Child-Read-Lessons/dp/0671...

If you have kids or like to teach them how to read, get this book. You won’t regret it.
