notthemessiah··on US Military had close call after using AI for hallucinated intelligence report
It was of course Palantir's Project Maven which lead us to drop a $2.5M missile on over 120 schoolchildren:

notthemessiah··on AI hallucination of Chinese nuclear components almost led to US Military attack
There's a big difference between "AI is creating misinformation and intelligence failures that could compound, especially given the fact that in a pre-AI world we came to the brink of nuclear warfare" vs the AI Doomerism of "Super-intelligent AI will kill us all in some mysterious way" of the AI "safety" TESCREAL cult, often used to hype up their own product capabilities.

In other cases, use of Palantir's AI-powered Project Maven lead to us using our long range $2.5M Tomahawk missiles to blow up an Iranian school along with over 100 schoolchildren, and humans in the loop did nothing to stop the accumulation of intelligence failures from the overreliance on AI. Palantir-funded politician JD Vance said he's doing God's work and "if that leads to the end times, OK".

It's the same pattern we see in predictive policing where "AI" is being used to manufacture probable cause, but instead of just using it to harass minorities as cops do, the people doing the policing are people actively trying to start Armageddon and the end times because they believe they are doing God's work. So they spend our long-range missiles stockpile to blow up schools because AI told them to.

notthemessiah··on US confirms for first time it has deployed space weapons
The only reason why Putin is there now is because we strongly backed Boris Yeltsin despite his unpopularity, we interfered with the 1996 election in order to prevent Communist Party challenger Gennady Zyuganov from winning re-election amidst disastrous liberalization policies and lowering life expectancy, and then Boris Yeltsin ended up appointing Putin, who did war crimes in Chechnya in an effort to appear tough as a strongman against the separatist threat. In 2001, the NYT had op-eds from Thomas Friedman that were "Rootin' for Putin". Had we not interfered, we probably would have had another Gorbachev.

Yes, you want a space only for those who think the same as Elon Musk, with his thumb being pressed down on the algorithm which you have no choice but to use.

On Bluesky/ATProto, I am free to chose my own algorithm or my own client software and affiliate with the people I want to. My data is always my own because I can host it on my own PDS. On Mastodon, I have similar freedoms, and you can opt into bridging ATProto with ActivityPub through Bridgy Fed. I like the freedom of the open web, but I guess not everybody thinks the same as me.

notthemessiah··on XCancel service is suspended until further notice
Bluesky, like Mastodon, is built on an open network on open source code. Run your own data server and moderation services that cater to your needs. Many are already doing it: Northsky, Eurosky, Blacksky, etc. If you want to live in a safe space isolated from the mainnet and its allegedly toxic users, you can do that too: Roundabout is built on ATProto but run on its own network, also Truth Social and Threads are forked versions of Mastodon but federated with nobody (Threads used to have opt-in Mastodon federation before Facebook decided they no longer want users to be able to do that).
notthemessiah··on Why is Google still serving dodgy ads?
Meta also including CSAM in their ads, computer generated in the US and real abuse materials in South Asia:

notthemessiah··on Julia 1.13 highlights
I love Julia, but I feel two annoyances right now with the ecosystem.

Interactive programming seems to be having a schism between Pluto, a reactive notebook like Observable, and Bonito, a more imperative notebook like Jupyter from the creator of plotting library Makie.

The other annoyance is that the packaging ecosystem is tied very closely to Github and Gitlab as the only alternative, in an era where Microsoft is killing Github reliability, and many new projects are moving to Tangled (on the AT Protocol network) and Forgejo (with Codeberg as the flagship), which has no packaging support from JuliaHub.

notthemessiah··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
If he salutes like a Nazi, pushes antisemitism like a Nazi, and promotes Nazi policies, he's probably a Nazi (or at best, functionally indistinguishable). Plus, his parents had close ties to Nazis:

notthemessiah··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Looks like data/account portability is in the works: https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-data-portability/lola

But at ATProto/Bluesky, account portability was a consideration from the start.

Bluesky Social is more useful for news. I can use custom clients such as https://sill.social/ which just aggregate the links and commentary from my feeds, and catch up on what news is important to the ppl I'm following.

Whenever I check X, it's always just misinformation, and it's impossible to see what people actually say because bluechecks are always the first to show up in the algorithmic ranking. On political commentary: they were dying hard for Graham Platner saying he was the only option, but then Troy Jackson who replaced him did better in the polls.

notthemessiah··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
English is still the lingua franca of Europe. I find that users in all parts of Asia still use Xitter heavily (though some artists in East and Southeast Asia fled when the Grok edit button was added), and only nazis and campist communists still use Xitter in the US.
notthemessiah··on Jack Dorsey launches Buzz to combine team chat, AI agents and Git hosting
You're right, but can we stick with Blue Ocean and Red Ocean as metaphors? 0 to 1 makes sense, but 1 to N loses it, and the whole framing reeks of pseudomathematics and math envy (which there is way too much of in the tech industry), when we have a perfectly good metaphor from competition in natural selection. Also the tech industry has way too much renaming-things-with-less-intuitive-terminology-to-seem-original.
notthemessiah··on There are no instances in ATProto
> Relays are quite expensive to run

While relays are among the more intensive parts of AT Protocol infrastructure, their cost of operation is still something most people can afford: approximately $30/mo now. What is truly expensive and difficult is something that will be immutably so regardless of how centralized or decentralized you are: moderation.

The author of this piece wrote about this common misconception about relays 9 months ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45077291#45078223

notthemessiah··on How to be anti-social – a guide to incoherent and isolating social experiences
> Talking to random people about anything, and talking to girls, and talking to girls romantically are all separate skills from talking to someone about an interest

This is entirely contradicted by my experiences. Broad generalizations and generalizations about broads are usually wrong.

notthemessiah··on How to be anti-social – a guide to incoherent and isolating social experiences
So this never happened?

https://techcrunch.com/2024/05/14/on-elons-whim-x-now-treats...

The policy was enacted less than 2 years ago, which is why your previous tweets didn't get affected, and it seems new Twitter owner might have since walked it back. Seems it also only affected mobile app users.

> In November, X ran a “timeline takeover” ad promoting an anti-trans film from PragerU, a conservative media nonprofit that has also been criticized for doubting climate change and downplaying the realities of slavery.

Climate change and the history of slavery... More ideas and narratives that the owner and his allies find threatening and uncomfortable.

notthemessiah··on How to be anti-social – a guide to incoherent and isolating social experiences
> platform for people who want to isolate from ideas and narratives they find uncomfortable

Ahh, like how if you say the word "cis" on Twitter, you get banned because the idea that gender is not binary is an idea that the owner of Twitter finds uncomfortable wants to isolate the audience from. So he promotes his own tweets, shoehorns it into peoples feeds and notifications, in order to create an ideological echo chamber. Like that?

notthemessiah··on How to be anti-social – a guide to incoherent and isolating social experiences
Your comment amounts to "so much for the tolerant left", and you seem to be projecting qualities of Twitter (under current management) onto Bluesky.

the author wrote this in the Leaflet comments sections:

"""

through some upsetting turn of events, someone put this on hackernews and started a piranha feeding frenzy of speculation about what / who im referring to here. so just to be clear:

i wrote this bulleted list in a couple minutes as a way to rant about the lack of charity i was noticing in 2 places

- my family, where 2 members aren't speaking to each other for petty reasons, looking for the other to capitulate and admit they're the aggressor

- on bluesky, where users are blaming every outage on "vibe coding"

if you took extra meaning from it, i'm sorry or congrats!

notthemessiah··on Finland looks to introduce Australia-style ban on social media
People in this thread are celebrating this, though it inevitably means ID-checking and mass surveillance. Australia's ban also exempted Roblox, a platform that exploits children and is a haven for child predators. Also, it's no coincidence that all these social media bans are arriving the same time youth are using social media to spread awareness of Israel's genocide of Palestine.
notthemessiah··on I made Zig compute 33M satellite positions in 3 seconds
This compares it to Python and Rust implementations, I wonder how it compares to Julia's SatelliteToolbox.jl? Julia also compiles to LLVM and has macros for explicit SIMD.

notthemessiah··on Claude's new constitution
At least when Google used the phrase, it had relatively few major controversies. Anthropic, by contrast, works with Palantir:

notthemessiah··on Rust in the kernel is no longer experimental
I'm guessing he means Rust voicing solidarity with Ukraine and sympathy with everyone affected by a conflict? It's hard to tell when people vaguepost. I guess wars of invasion/annexation are too controversial to oppose.

"Before going into the details of the new Rust release, we'd like to state that we stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and express our support for all people affected by this conflict."

notthemessiah··on Rust in the kernel is no longer experimental
Agreed, the vagueposting is indication of ill-intent of the top-level comment. No hyperlinks or specifics, it might as well be a game of mad-libs where you insert your grievance here.
notthemessiah··on Replacement.ai
The problem is that the AI companies are most interested in displacing the existing labor force more so than they are interested in developing new uses of AI in areas that humans are inherently bad at. They are more interested in replacing good jobs with AI rather than bad jobs. It's not that machines are doing jobs better, they are just doing them for cheaper and by cutting more corners.

notthemessiah··on Are we decentralized yet?
> Like if I join some node then one day it's offline and all my data lost. I mean surely instances usually don't disappear without notice but it still a totally possible thing.

This happened to me with julialang.social which just stopped running after the guy hired to host it was poached by Google and he lost all interest in the Julia language community. Lost everything. Not going to look back at activitypub as ATProto is the future for me.

notthemessiah··on Are we decentralized yet?
adding Threads's 400M users changes the ActivityPub fediverse centralized market share to 99.72%, beyond that of BlueSky's share of 99.55%.
notthemessiah··on Are we decentralized yet?
This is factually wrong, and disproven by the fact there are now fully independent federated instances such as BlackSky and soon to be NorthSky. Furthermore, they have independent codebases which are fully compatible. Compare to ActivityPub where most instances are just running Mastodon or some close fork or risk breaking compatibility. What's the point of federation if you are stuck with a monoculture of implementations?

The main BlueSky services are still by far the most popular, which is why we see centralization on the network.
