notriskfree··on Racket 8.1
You doofus.
notriskfree··on Racket 8.1
I think the aim was more for supportability. I assume if you enjoy Scheme; you would like to write more of your language in Scheme and less of it in C. Although that is somewhat contradicted by the plans to create a new syntax for Racket going forward. Chez Scheme by itself seems to be extremely fast.
notriskfree··on Why do so many companies incorporate in Delaware?
Because so many large American corporations; are heavily involved with Farming chickens.
notriskfree··on Hurricane China: How to prepare
An enjoyable read and being prepared is always good advice.

I don't doubt that China has great engineers; I personally use a Huawei phone and Huawei tablet. I believe these are banned in the USA.

I do doubt that Huawei have created their own operating system to rival android. Unless git clone constitutes an act of creation; if so I have also created lots of new operating systems.

Not saying they couldn't develop an operating system; but the rest of the article did a pretty good job of explaining why they just wouldn't.

If someone 'cheats', there is a pretty good chance that they also 'lie'. And enough with the cultural relativism. Some things people do are recognizably bad just at the human or even social animal level.

Even dogs get embarrassed by their own behavior, if they are caught out.

notriskfree··on CP/Mish is an open source sort-of-CP/M distribution for Z80
The only flaw with this idea is that the Z80 is an acquired taste; not knocking it; and I liked it when the choice was more limited; but when I had Z80 systems; I would have really loved a 2.4Ghz PI 400. - I do understand that running Linux on everything; is not every ones idea of fun and interesting.
notriskfree··on rpi-open-firmware: open-source VPU side bootloader for Raspberry Pi
I like and use my new PI400 every day. Still have several older versions mostly sat in a desk drawer. The pace of innovation in the PI product line has been rapid; I have no reason to use earlier slower less reliable versions. And they don't have great resale value. None of them went straight into the drawer; they all had their time to run and occasionally get involved in a project.
notriskfree··on StoneKnifeForth (With a Metacircular Compiler)
Very nice. Building a new FORTH using FORTH might have been easier; FORTH is traditionally very good at rebuilding itself. e.g. WimpForth on a PI400 recompiles its own kernel to an absolute image (executable) in 00:00:007. FORTH week on HN is great. The main trouble with FORTH is remembering to stop playing with FORTH and actually write the App.
notriskfree··on The Progressive Purge Begins: Tech’s stampede will lead to more populist anger
If your country does become a one party system; join that party and change it from the inside.
notriskfree··on We can have democracy or we can have Facebook
Indeed the less the state has to do with religion; the more religious freedom everyone has.
notriskfree··on A Worsening Culture War
I agree the UK is not the US and we have different issues in the UK that we are dealing with.

Living and working near London I always assumed the increased ethnic diversity and global outlook in the capital led to less racism. I assumed it was the rural homogenous countryside that had more endemic racism. I guess we all misunderstand each other all the time.

notriskfree··on A Worsening Culture War
Exactly; when there was a clash of civilizations between a free west and a repressive soviet union; it made sense that Russia was the enemy.

Now it is just a conflict between different European powers with varying levels of dysfunctional democracy and corrupt elites.

So what is the basis for hating the Russians now; racism?

notriskfree··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
I doubt the M1 macs are really using memory much more efficiently; the stock M1 macs with 8GB were available rapidly; the Macs with 16GB ram or larger disk space had a three to four week delay when ordering; a lot of enthusiasts and influencers rushed out and got base models; they are then surprised to find they can work ok in most apps with only 8GB.

Perhaps they never really needed to fit 32GB into their intel macs either. Some days after the glowing reviews; and strange comments about magic memory utilization; we now see comments concerned about SSD wear due to swap file usage.

If the applications and data structures are more compact in memory on the arm processors; it should be easy to test; you just need an intel mac; and an M1 mac running the same app on the same document and look at how much memory it uses.

Software Engineers: We need a Hippocratic Oath for Microsoft Presidents.
notriskfree··on Delphi's 25th Birthday
It is quite simple. I mean that if you install the software N times; perhaps because you often switch and rebuild machines; and you do not have a current subscription; Dennis in tech support will not reset your license registration limit; and you will never be able to install the software again.
notriskfree··on Delphi's 25th Birthday
Too bad you don't actually let us reinstall the software we already paid for.
notriskfree··on Delphi's 25th Birthday
Delphi is great; just ensure you always stay subscribed. Their tech support team regard properly managing their own strict license system as 'a courtesy' and will prevent you from installing the licensed software that you purchased. For that reason alone; I am out.
