notnmeyer··on Code like a surgeon
> My current goal with AI coding tools is to spend 100% of my time doing stuff that matters. (As a UI prototyper, that mostly means tinkering with design concepts.)

this struck me as weird. both in terms of “tinkering” being the most important thing to be doing, and then also describing “working like a surgeon” to be tinkering.

notnmeyer··on Rivian's TM-B electric bike
charging by pedaling is just for range extension. obviously you aren’t breaking the laws of thermodynamics on an e-bike.
notnmeyer··on Rivian's TM-B electric bike
an emtb with the assist off feels like you’re pedaling out of a black hole.
notnmeyer··on Synology reverses policy banning third-party HDDs
they’re pretty clearly referring to _their_ use case and not everyone’s. i think people are mostly talking past each other about this. there isn’t one feature set that matters for everyone, so of course a synology is perfect for some and for others it can be replaced with “junk”.
notnmeyer··on RediShell: Critical remote code execution vulnerability in Redis
i assumed it was intentional
notnmeyer··on RediShell: Critical remote code execution vulnerability in Redis
"RediShell" is an absolutely horrible name that makes it extremely difficult to search for things.
notnmeyer··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
maybe, but there was a time when google was the best alternative too.
notnmeyer··on I'm spoiled by Apple Silicon but still love Framework
i also want an arm laptop running linux with good hardware. hearing it a lot too. fingers crossed.
notnmeyer··on Why our website looks like an operating system
i miss the old web where websites were fun, so this is kind of neat. on the other hand i’m not a huge fan of sites so loaded with js that performance is abysmal.
notnmeyer··on [dead]
hard to say, the article is so short on details.
notnmeyer··on Web apps in a single, portable, self-updating, vanilla HTML file
iirc browsers used to allow direct filesystem access.
notnmeyer··on GitHub was having issues
amazing
notnmeyer··on GitHub was having issues
how's the reliability been?
notnmeyer··on GitHub was having issues
anybody have a GH alternative they like? bonus points awarded for not being a straight clone of GH.
notnmeyer··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (July 2025)
mostly spending free time on my daily note taking / standup tool, daylog: https://github.com/notnmeyer/daylog-cli. more or less the definition of “useless”, for-myself software.
notnmeyer··on The JJ VCS workshop: A zero-to-hero speedrun
this looks great. excited to give it a go!
notnmeyer··on Do not download the app, use the website
i use spotlight to switch apps. having everything in a browser messes with that.
notnmeyer··on Positron – A next-generation data science IDE
it looks like it is based on vsc. there’s got to be a decent sql client extension, right?
notnmeyer··on Speeding up my ZSH shell
you are wise and have good taste
notnmeyer··on Show HN: ggc – A terminal-based Git CLI written in Go
it’s slow, not great. at a previous place we used go-git and wound up switching to just shelling out to git.
notnmeyer··on Show HN: ggc – A terminal-based Git CLI written in Go
any advice on learning jujutsu? i keep bouncing off tutorials and blog posts about it. i’ve had a difficult time trying to map the github-centric branch-based workflow to jj. i’m sure part of the problem is “don’t try to use it like git”, but i haven’t gotten to the aha moment where it clicks.
notnmeyer··on Helix Editor 25.07
i know many very smart people that insist that their muscle memory makes it impossible to switch editors or shells.

i respect the perspective of “i like my tools and have no reason to switch”.

what i feel is constantly missed if the understanding that your regular tools are literally one command away. learning something new doesn’t mean you can’t also take advantage of your muscle memory as necessary.

notnmeyer··on I write type-safe generic data structures in C
pretty sure C is the new Go.
notnmeyer··on Infrastructure at Roblox
kids should _not_ be playing roblox unsupervised (or at all?). it’s full of inappropriate and seemingly unmoderated content, while simultaneously being built to extract microtransactions.

amazing infra challenges, just a shame is a cesspool.

notnmeyer··on Mbake – A Makefile formatter and linter, that only took 50 years
or any other task runner
notnmeyer··on Dull Men’s Club
the chaotic evil take
notnmeyer··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
yeah, this also makes sense
notnmeyer··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
correct
notnmeyer··on My iPhone 8 Refuses to Die: Now It's a Solar-Powered Vision OCR Server
i’d guess it’s more to keep extremely low effort submissions out of the app store.
notnmeyer··on Dull Men’s Club
overers see the world as it is and live to solve problems.

underers are frantically trying to fix their broken lives.

nihilists lacking opinions are empty shells.
