I made it to 1000 karma and I think that's it for me here.

notkaiho··on Lemmy, an open-source federated Reddit alternative, gets funding for development
Exactly, it's not like you can't create a genuinely anonymous email address for a one-off purpose.
notkaiho··on Lemmy, an open-source federated Reddit alternative, gets funding for development
It will absolutely need popular support to attain some sort of critical mass, and not just among the cast-offs from other platforms, such as Gab, Parler etc.
notkaiho··on What I learned from writing for The Onion for a month (2015)
Would you say that it is worth teaching media studies and literacy in schools?
notkaiho··on What I learned from writing for The Onion for a month (2015)
I feel almost ashamed to say that I don't think I've ever read past the headline on an Onion article.

They just absolutely nail the satire in that one-liner, time after time after time.

notkaiho··on Julian Assange charged in superseding indictment
Aren't the initial news stories credible?
notkaiho··on Julian Assange charged in superseding indictment
I may be misunderstanding your comment, but Assange is Australian.
notkaiho··on The Last of Us Part 2: What’s the Problem Here, Exactly?
I've not played Part II but it's not like the first one was particularly revelatory in the story itself - instead, as an examination of loss and responsibility it was very reminiscent of something like The Road
notkaiho··on Reflections on Being a Female Founder
Can be; more often it's destructive, and to what end?
notkaiho··on My first SaaS, don't be gentle
What's your USP over, say, UptimeRobot? Looks slick, but thought I'd ask :)
notkaiho··on Reddit started banning accounts that voted for content “against their policies”
So it's a hive mind and group think but with terrible people instead?
notkaiho··on Deus Ex at 20: The oral history of a pivotal PC game
We need, in fact the industry simply REQUIRES, in-depth oral history journalism and retrospectives like this. The "gaming industry" is 40+ years old now, and there have been absolutely pivotal works in that time. They deserve to be interrogated and documented dispassionately and with rigor.

> That's a big gap in your memory between 1986 and when React was first released in 2013. Or _maybe_ 2010 or 2011 if you were working inside Facebook back before they released it publicly...

You do realize why you're being downvoted, right? :D

notkaiho··on Turn on MFA Before Crooks Do It for You
Interesting! I think I read about a person who had a "only turn on this machine if I ask you to" situation, where that computer would boot, automatically connect to a network and allow for connections to the secrets store, in a situation like you describe.

Of course, that requires maintenance and checks it would work in a real life situation, that network configurations haven't changed, the parents are present and compos mentis, etc.

notkaiho··on Turn on MFA Before Crooks Do It for You
Exactly what I thought when I read the comment. Unless it's something you connect with on a regular basis, and therefore I guess less secure?
notkaiho··on Discovering Dennis Ritchie’s Lost Dissertation
But, as your friend thought, being respectful is also important. By all means say thank you, but don't expect much response beyond an acknowledgement. Famous people get TIRED of strangers talking to them, as much as they like the random encounters.

That's not at all saying "we need to dismantle the nuclear family".

It's saying "we believe that care networks can cut across current nuclear family structures to the extent everyone involved feels comfortable".

notkaiho··on Turn on MFA Before Crooks Do It for You
The article mentions the father having recovery codes in a safe. For those of you who do use MFA with recovery code access if the MFA device is lost, how do you store your recovery codes?

Say I have MFA enabled to send me an SMS when I log into my email.

I am abroad, and my phone gets stolen. I need to log in to my email on some other device and re-access my boarding passes, maybe communicate about my upcoming radio silence. But I can't access my account without the code sent to my phone...

That's my worry with this thing.

Source needed on this claim that "BLM(the organization) saying we need to dismantle the nuclear family"
notkaiho··on Doug Engelbart’s 1968 demo
Wow, that's ... niche
notkaiho··on Doug Engelbart’s 1968 demo
I wouldn't limit it to just Apple. Literally all of modern computing tools are influenced, to a greater or occasionally lesser extent, by this work.
notkaiho··on Doug Engelbart’s 1968 demo
Is this a reference to the SpaceX manned launch vehicle? Interesting use of "alien spacecraft" if so.
notkaiho··on TidyTweets – Tidy up your Twitter profile
Thanks! I would really have liked to see this sort of explaining text immediately on clicking to the page (as I often do ok HN before looking at comments)

They could have set work that is difficult to lift word for word, or examine in any number of ways that do not allow googling
notkaiho··on Weizsäcker's speech on 40th anniversary of WW2's end (1985)
That's correct - a US president cannot serve more than two terms. If they were already acting as President for two or more years, they can only be elected to the position once. This was codified in the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution.
notkaiho··on Weizsäcker's speech on 40th anniversary of WW2's end (1985)
Term limits, though. :)
notkaiho··on Weizsäcker's speech on 40th anniversary of WW2's end (1985)
Except unlike the British Monarchy, one is not born into the position and cannot expect to gain the position purely by blood. The position itself may be largely ceremonial, but the holder of the post is recognised as an elder statesperson in their own right for their career prior to the presidency.
notkaiho··on Procrastination is driven by our desire to avoid difficult emotions, says expert
You're absolutely right! I've personally only just been diagnosed, well into my thirties, and am on month 3 of trying to get my medication correct, compounded with fun things like pandemic lockdown. It's a ride.
notkaiho··on Procrastination is driven by our desire to avoid difficult emotions, says expert
It might not be laziness if the difficult emotions would have to be confronted by the mopping the floor kind of procrastination. Or, worse, if realising you need to mow the lawn makes you realise your entire yard is a mess and probably a shame to your community and you feel worse because of it - so you suppress and procrastinate.
