notjoemama··on The myth that you can’t build interactive web apps except as single page app
It’s fine. I don’t see the click-bait-ness of what the other person is talking about. Especially since I’ve run into the title length limit before. Some people have bad days and are more (overly?) critical.
notjoemama··on Traceroute Isn't Real
Nice! Back in the day I provided remote support and occasionally ran trace to diagnose data transfer issues. The few times there was a problem with a hop, there wasn’t anything that could be done. But each time I was able to find either a news article on inclement weather or a post on the ISP website about a network issue. Worked with a guy that spotted a car wreck from trace. Well, it was down the street and so was the trunk cnx.
notjoemama··on Researchers are questioning if ADHD should be seen as a disorder
The fact the article is blocked puts a damper on being able to converse. I just opened a letter from a health care provider, a third party to a clinic that ran tests from my primary care provider, whose notice was about a data breach. Basically, everything was taken. Everything. If you ask, the answer is yes. I'm disinclined to create yet another account on another site that I have to keep track of at the moment.

About the topic. My wife has inattentive ADD and it has put a great deal of tension on our relationship. A few things have improved after she got meds. Because of the fears around stimulant medication, and some intentional scarcity by Pharma, the costs have increased and they are now more difficult to get. I have to wonder...is this "new perspective" simply a reaction to those issues? Is it a reality that leaving everything you pick up in the house where ever you distractedly last left it, having multiple bills sent to collections agencies, and struggling to maintain a normal friendships, not...a disorder?

I do think people are affected to varying degrees, like most things. And I have no way of knowing whether that's a point the article mentioned. But I am suspicious given the problems of the medications that effectively treat the decrease in activity of the executive function in the brain. Cognitive behavioral therapy is NOT a cure-all.

If you are curious about ADHD/ADD, I highly recommend looking for presentations by Dr. Barkley on YouTube.

notjoemama··on Free-form floor plan design using differentiable Voronoi diagram
Does anyone know how to forward this to Hello Games so they can work it into No Man’s Sky? lol
notjoemama··on Free-form floor plan design using differentiable Voronoi diagram
Me too. While I recall Calculus class, I’ve been paid to operate at the algebra level for years. I think this walkthrough is a retread of differential equations, in particular the kind that attempt to approximate the result of the function as it approaches the limit of a point. I get lost at the bits involving dimensionality. I think it’s evident but it’s been years since I’ve read mathematics at this level.
notjoemama··on Modular Monoliths Are a Good Idea
I’ve started taking 5 layers out of a Rails app, back to MVC. It’s so much faster now I actually feel bad, and I’m not the one that built the app in the first place. The premise during its construction was that it would scale to millions of active users. It…is not doing that in the wild…

notjoemama··on Have ‘hobby’ apps become the new social networks?
Cool. So online activists can become more engaged irl? Sounds great unless the activism is the kind you disagree with. Imagine this brining together a collection of white supremacists or antifa. Or pro-life versus pro-choice.

This is the problem with the tech world. They are so preoccupied with whether they can, they don’t stop to think if they should.

Yes, that's from Jurassic Park.

notjoemama··on Kids Should Be Taught to Think Logically
Symbolic logic is already taught as part of the common core, just not in the distinctly programatic way it exists in writing code. Logical thinking in mathematics has been pushed down to elementary school. What the author thinks ought to be already mostly is.

But let's say you're an activist and expect the world to reflect your view...

The National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers are the two governing bodies that pushed for it. You can either lobby them or the Department of Education to force states to teach what you want them to teach.

At one point, well before Facebook was 'Facebook' in modern parlance, I posted a photo of a potato on my timeline knowing that somewhere in their object graph, I == potato. I'm certain my potatodentity isn't in this dataset, but one can hope that joke eventually lands.
notjoemama··on You are not dumb, you just lack the prerequisites
Assessments are getting better in education and they help find missed skills. It's possible the author was smart enough to copy but not understand why they were doing what they were doing. Whether your local district focuses on skill acquisition versus graduation rate may determine the students success long term. I know little, but what I've seen from reading programs they're pretty much 'there' in discovering these blind spots. I don't know if there is comparable assessments or programs for mathematics.
notjoemama··on Defenders think in lists, attackers think in graphs (2015)
Amongst the linguistic hand waving is information theory. But who am I to judge someone else's word-a-day calendar?
notjoemama··on On finishing projects
But also, don't over optimize. For example, if your routine or schedule is mostly working but you feel like you need some less structured time, don't schedule it, just go out and do that. Don't work it in for the purpose of being more "productive" later.

I've been feeling like the software industry is over optimizing engineering output just a smidge beyond what is morally acceptable. Not enough to raise red flags about cruel and unusual, but just over the line of "it's ok to be human". Maybe that's just me and I'm someone who doesn't need a Pomodoro timer or multiple "just for an update" meetings to get work done. But maybe it's also upper management trying to turn business school theory into something real. You're not a number or a widget or for God sakes a brand. You're a person. Remember that.

notjoemama··on Judge orders CDC to stop deleting emails of departing staff: 'likely unlawful'
That quote is actually in the article and so part of its context and substance. Maybe you meant to point out it was not the author that made the statement?

I used to believe left leaning reporting was more free of bias and manipulation until I realized they often use this tactic. They will not say something themselves, but find someone to quote that makes the point they want made.

They also use build up, where they go back in time and recant the past before moving to the present where they then show the reader what to see through the framing they want them to see it. Some outlets/journailists are better than others, and sometimes it's not what I'm describing. But this method of manipulating public perception of issues and events exists.

At least with sources on the right they are blatant and obvious, easy to pick out and pick apart what they are wrong about.

If you've seen promos for GroundNews recently, I'd highly recommend it. It doesn't solve the bias problem, but as an individual it starts uncovering the ways our news media put their fingers on the scales of society.

notjoemama··on Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election
Thank you! I had just been reading on another site about the US and it's "involvement" in a previous election in Argentina. Appreciate the correction. Oh my, I need to step away from the computer today. :/
notjoemama··on Suspicious data pattern in recent Venezuelan election
I recall having read about elections in Africa and the troubles they faced. I can't find it now, but there was one particular website offering a very detailed but rigorous approach to determining the legitimacy of elections. I'll offer this article from the BBC as a stand in for the criteria (from 2016):

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-37243190

Vote rigging: How to spot the tell-tale signs

1. Too many voters

2. A high turnout in specific areas

3. Large numbers of invalid votes

4. More votes than ballot papers issued

5. Results that don't match

6. Delay in announcing results

I would encourage anyone from Venezuela to look into the history of elections in Africa. It is well documented and criteria well supported.

notjoemama··on Joe Biden stands down as Democratic candidate
Part of it is a numbers game. She would get an incumbent bump over other potential candidates. There is hope, and I believe some data showing, she could energize the POC base. This is especially important now because polling was suggesting Trump was growing that area. Fundamentally though, name recognition ends up being meaningful in elections. I’m not advocating one way or another, just sharing why it seems to be an obvious choice for the party. If it helps, who I prefer isn’t being considered, probably because it’s not “their turn”.
notjoemama··on I am starting an AI+Education company
Maybe part of it is seeing education as a massive untapped wallet? There's a reason Teachers Pay Teachers exists and frankly, given the greed of Silicon Valley and existing ED companies, isn't it an environmentally created immune system?
notjoemama··on Show HN: 30ms latency screen sharing in Rust
Ever heard of the Akamai network? Netflix might be a good example. Trace routes show latency between network hops. To reduce latency you either buy better network hardware, buy better cabling, or reduce hops in n the network. Since the first two are more expensive than the third, if your service must have very fast response between server and client, move the server closer to the client. Large corporations run cache servers in multiple data centers everywhere geographically so the response time for clients is better than their competition. Why new video services struggles to compete with YouTube is in part because YouTube can afford this kind of architecture where a startup cannot. Even if it’s the best code money can buy, it will never provide the same level of experience to users as local cache servers. Kind sucks not body can compete.
notjoemama··on Show HN: 30ms latency screen sharing in Rust
Looks like a LAN tele…er, screen sharing server/client. Presumably you could serve over the internet but it will not get the 30ms latency. Aside from the streaming (I only spent a few minutes reviewing the source) it’s a live jpeg kind of thing. I built something similar to screen share with my kids when we played Minecraft together. It was really for me because once we got in game they would take off and in 5 minutes be screaming for help 10 chunks away in some zombie skeleton infested cave at or near bedrock. Being kids, I never got good enough directions to help them in time. Anyway, it was a fun project. I used CUDA and could get 60fps per client on CAT5 and 45-ish over WiFi, dropping to 10-15fps when I walked in and out of rooms with the laptop. 60fps is 15ms, so 20 is 50fps.
notjoemama··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
Not great to link a wiki covering many other countries outside of Africa without specifying What exactly your point is. I read it and none of it surprised me.

You do realize a great deal of the US meddling was prompted by USSR/Russian meddling, right? I’m not giving the US a pass by saying that, but the Cold War and threat of nuclear annihilation is a backdrop to many of these events.

I'm also not going to ignore the issues the countries within Africa deal with that have nothing to do with their past of imperialism or colonialism. I could point to India as a country that reformed into a modern successful nation post colonialism. Nor ought we ignore the vast amounts of financial aid given so often to these countries. It’s a tangled difficult problem.

I suspect you have more ire than foundation.

notjoemama··on The African workers driving the AI revolution, for about a dollar an hour
I just read this covering the history of Kenya’s colonialism and independence. (Mercy, from the article, works for a Meta office in Nairobi, Kenya)

https://www.britannica.com/place/Kenya/Kenya-colony

What about the last 60 years free of colonial rule connects to the current state today? Do you think these corporate interests stem from Kenya’s Building Bridges Initiative?

I ask because I recently listened to a podcast about China’s Belt and Road Initiative winding down in Africa. I was surprised to hear this because they had committed to a large infusion of capital with some future trade partnerships (tens of billions at least). It was set to be a massive boon for much of Africa after the US reduced its economic aid in the region. Their reasoning was (economic woes in China aside), they found too much was unstable, specifically legislatively and socially. Permits and licenses drug out where most of the time it was difficult to know which official was in charge of which responsibilities. Also, they would build a facility that would be repeatedly attacked and destroyed by warlords in the area. I believe they said it was common to lose workers to independent gangs.

Just wondering if you could expand on what you said so I can connect the same dots. I’m not understanding your critique.

Do you know if there’s been any advancement on the cause? Last I checked, my cocktail party understanding was it trained immune cells to attack parts of the nervous system. This explains that other laws had been repealed following the conclusion of war 20 years prior. Women took to the streets in protest and filled the senate. As a result the lex Oppia was revoked.

Interesting event. Let's not engage in presentism while we consider the implications of it today.

notjoemama··on Garbage collect your technical debt (2021)

Oh, of course, of course. Why, this is so mundane, why would anyone even bother to read it?

> For content processed or stored on Adobe servers, Adobe may use technologies and other processes, including escalation for manual (human) review, to screen for certain types of illegal content (such as child sexual abuse material), or other abusive content or behavior (for example, patterns of activity that indicate spam or phishing).

They are going to use AI to scan through all content...for your protection. Does Adobe have a problem with people using their cloud to produce child abuse material? I think we all recognize Bitcoin is used for illegal activity. But I never considered Adobe being associated with CP. I guess that's what they're going with...

I feel like this is a trope at this point. Just like Microsoft Recall, no one believes or trusts this won't eventually turn into them using your IP for themselves via AI, and then eventually by the government. That's the bottom line.

To really put a point on it, they are saying they're swipping a spider off us while they slip their hands down our pants.

notjoemama··on Scientists wonder if shape of the universe is like a doughnut
It's also possible particles increase causing expansion, this is just theoretical still. But if that's true, then it is finite but perpetually increasing. Potentially infinitely.
