notatoad··on Apple Watch Series 12
I had the exact same experience. Charging an Apple Watch is a routine thing, charging a garmin is an infrequent annoyance.

And like the other commenter says, I could just fix my habits. But no, that’s not how my brain works

notatoad··on iPhone Duo
Doing it live isn’t going to bring Steve back. He was a natural showman, the people doing it now aren’t. They’re engineers and executives. Putting them on a live stage is going to make it even tougher on them.
notatoad··on iPhone Duo
It’s been a while since I watched an Apple presentation, but I caught a bit of this one. And I spent the whole time trying to figure out who it was for - the presenters didn’t seem to express any genuine excitement about the products, and it didn’t convey any useful information that couldn’t be better shared by just posting the slides.

The only thing I can see is that it generates some clips for the presenters to share on their LinkedIn pages. I assume there is prestige in being selected as a presenter, and the rest of the show serves its purpose simply by existing.

notatoad··on DeepSeek launching v4.1 flash cheaper and more capable than v4 pro
Seems to be lots of people in here worried about “if i had”, and nobody who actually has done this.

Anybody actually using deepseek in a production system affected by this want to share their experience?

notatoad··on How I advertise malicious software on Google Ads
this is what regulatory failure looks like. There's no downside for google to do this, because nobody is going to hold them accountable. Nobody is telling them they have to explain their actions, and it's easier for them not to, so why would they?
notatoad··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
from the thread last week, it seems to be installed by default on every mac install, possibly not on windows installs.

notatoad··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
i think that's a perfectly coherent and reasonable way for both these apps to work.

people don't want AI features leaking into their non-ai apps. I'm not an AI hater - I want my AI app to be able to read and write word docs, but when i decide to open up libreoffice i'm doing that because i want to write something myself, not use AI. i don't need my word processor to bundle an inferior version of what the ChatGPT can do for me.

notatoad··on WeatherNext 3
does google actually use their own models in consumer products? i'm not an android user, but the weather widget in the google search results for my area always seems to be attributed to weather.com.
notatoad··on Ask HN: How do you manage skills files?
yes, it is. it's almost exactly the same thing.

skills are just an agents.md broken up into chunks so you can manage and share them separately. unfortunately there's no real good workflow for managing or sharing them separately, so most people end up treating them exactly the same way they do agents.md.

notatoad··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
Equally trivial for Google to do the same thing. Is it trivial to do this in a way that exceeds googles own ability to detect flaws?
notatoad··on Google Antigravity TOS: 3rd party usage can get Google account suspended
i was using antigravity pretty heavily for a while in the spring, it seemed to be a good value for my usage. then i got banned out of the blue for "suspected" ToS violations, with a notification that heavily hinted it was because of openclaw.

i've never used openclaw, never tried to use my google ai subscription anywhere other than the antigravity app. but apparently just "our ai mistakenly suspects you might be using openclaw" is enough to get your google account temporarily suspended. not worth the risk for me, i need a google account more than i need antigravity.

and the ban would be bad enough, but the communication was nonexistent. just a sign-in error on the antigravity app, then a day later it updated to show a vauge warning about openclaw with a link to a random google form to submit an appeal, and then a couple days later my account magically started working again.

notatoad··on GPT-6 Astra
because "people will let our AI spend their money for them" is the workflow that makes their valuations reasonable.
notatoad··on Nvidia to acquire Hugging Face
no, it's not a conflict of interest to invest in multiple companies who compete with each other.
notatoad··on ChatGPT outage – Resolved
my greatest achievement is having a question on SO closed for being too narrowly focused and unlikely to be useful to anybody else, and then a multi year history of notifications about "you've earned a popular question badge" for that same question.
notatoad··on Muse Spark 1.3
when are we going to stop pretending these benchmarks have any meaning?

anybody who's used these models knows that their real-world software engineering performance has no relation to the ranking on deepSWE.

notatoad··on Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber
it would be a bad take if the webui had 3.7 flash available in it today, and they just hadn't fully rolled out the latest model when they posted the launch announcement.

but the webui is currently offering 3.6 flash. the previous model still hasn't actually rolled out to it yet.

notatoad··on Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber
yeah in typical google fashion, the best way to use the gemini models is by avoiding google's actual products. i've got a vision project where gemini flash is the best option by a long shot, and i just use openrouter so i don't have to navigate google's mess.
notatoad··on Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber
sonnet 5 is bad by almost any metric.

anthropic really needs something to address the cheaper end of the market before they get left behind. Sonnet 5 sucks, and Haiku hasn't been updated in a year. meanwhile we've got gemini flash, luna, and GLM5.3 all delivering 90% of the performance for a small fraction of the cost. paying $25/mTok is going to start looking pretty silly soon.

notatoad··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
Ed Zitrons wild claims might be for entertainment value, but Altman’s are for his own valuation. He’s bringing in hundreds of billions of dollars off those claims.
notatoad··on Urban Congestion Pricing and the Response Times of Emergency Medical Services
>How are they going to do if there's no public transportation available for their commute?

is there any city anywhere that has implemented congestion pricing without having public transit available?

notatoad··on AnkiDroid: Google Play no longer allowing Open Collective donation link
if i had a commercial app that i wanted to distribute off the play store, what are the options?
notatoad··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
i think you overestimate the number of tech-savvy people who ever cared about cookies and ad tracking.
notatoad··on Playa Phone
>Is Burning Man fun? I got the rather cynical impression that it's mostly very well off tech people and even better off finance/political people.

not sure what answer you expect to get here, on the forum hosted by the most noteworthy VC firm in silicon valley. the people why say burning man sucks now will usually say it sucks because of the ycombinator types

notatoad··on Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI"
that seems like two separate problems.

too many patches from unknown and untrusted contributors is a triage problem - telling a known and trusted contributor they can't use AI to help work on something just because other people are sending slop for review is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

notatoad··on Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX
The monopoly on the use of force has gotten kinda blurry as well these days. As long as people keep electing anti-government governments, the risk of technocracy is very real.
notatoad··on M5Stack Launches PaperMono
i can't remember where i read it, but a few days ago i saw they didn't expect a restock until next year
notatoad··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
if you've got an enterprise contract, doesn't that include pricing? a temporary discount on the base API rate probably isn't super relevant to that.
notatoad··on OpenAI: GPT 5.6 Sol price reduction (until at least Nov 21)
if you're picking AI models for long-term sustainability you're doing it wrong. There's really no point in locking in model choice for anything more than a month or two these days.
notatoad··on Death to px, long live ch
what the spec says doesn't really matter though, the spec is just nonsense people wrote down to try to back-explain decisions that the browsers had already made.

pixels are pixels, and no browser implements them as a fractional-inch measurement. in every actual implementation i'm aware of, they're a hardware based unit.

notatoad··on Death to px, long live ch
px is still a useful unit. the user's operating system applying a scaling fator doesn't make it not useful.

if the user's operating system is configured to draw pixels at a 1:1 ratio, your pixels will be drawn at a 1:1 ratio. if the user's operating system is configured to draw pixels at a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, you as a web developer don't get to override that, but you're still addressing pixels directly. if you want to write software that manages the user's hardware directly without giving them options to override it, the web is probably not the right platform for you.
