notanormalnerd··on Ask HN: 27, accidentally became wealthy, lost drive. What should I do?
Get a therapist or a life coach.

Sounds dumb now but he will help you reflect on what you want, what you need, what is in the dark. Maybe there was something wrong in the first place and you did not know. Talk to somebody independent. Get your thoughts reflected back at you.

You are now in a phase where you have always worked for, you reached your goals... great but nobody tells you what comes after. Take some time off and reflect with somebody. Then you will find out what you like and what you want to do. You are out in the open now, that is scary and there is just openness around you.

It will take some time, but try to enjoy life. Try stuff. Try travelling, try hiking or sports or arts or music. You will find something that you want to do.

Be smart about it and move forward. I am in a similar position although not as extreme. But I also suddenly reached all my intermediate goals all at once. So now what...

Let's figure this out and make the best of it.

notanormalnerd··on California tried to save the nation from tax filing, then Intuit stepped in
Funnily enough it isn't.

Because you can go out and buy one of the programs that are on the market. There is a public interface/api that can be used by the companies to file your taxes. We even have startups doing your taxes with a questionaire on your phone.

But the government provides you with a free, basic version, the same they did with the standard forms. There is little help, a bit of explanation but nothing more.

And since you have to hand it in digitally now, they are also providing the means to do so. Paper, but digital.

I am sorry for your experience, but Hetzner is a european Hoster in Germany and mostly does business with german and european companies. Rejecting a customer because he is on another continent is a valid reason for me.

The sole overhead of doing the accounting and even abuse handling for other continents is probably not worth the money.

Maybe it isn't clear from their page and they should be more open about which markets they serve.

notanormalnerd··on German region to fine Tesla for illegal construction
That is just wrong. You have to tax the 1% of the list price, 0,5% for hybrid and electric and 0,1% for ebikes and bikes.

Also you don't have to pay the 45%. That is the highest tax bracket in the progessive system.

So you have to put the 1% (1000€ for a really expensive car you probably only get as a CEO) and assume that as payout. And then you tax that. For a good car you normally are in the range of 300-500€ a month for normal employees and then you can even pay the gas which is a bigger benefit for most people.

Also you don't have to pay taxes on unrealised gains, that is just bullshit. You have to pay taxes only when you realise those gains, e.g. when you pull the option and sell or keep the shares. As long as it is just options you don't have to pay anything.

But with your level of tax knowledge I would also be scared of the bad bad Finanzamt. OwO

notanormalnerd··on I was let go for refusing to deploy a dark pattern
I don't know why this hasn't come up in any of the threads. With the GDPR this is illegal. Your data officer would be furious and your VP probably out of a job for getting a 100.000€ fine. There is no reason you need that when the user did not submit it, so you have no explicit consent. As a developer in Europe I live the GDPR. I love my privacy and the privacy of the users. All the marketing and sales stuff has been proofen to not work very well, so what the heck?
notanormalnerd··on Europe's Software Problem
I want to highlight this.

There is always talk about a european market, but it is more like 27 markets with one access ticket.

You have 27 languages, 27 cultures, 27 political systems, 27 markets, 27 levels of development and infrastructure. Although you have a market of 300 million consumers, they all have different spending habits, different spending power, different needs...

America is one market of 300 million people, with roughly the same culture, the same language, the same laws and political system and has been exporting it's language and power through out the last 100 years, so your market is probably double the size of your population.

There is also success stories of european players: Zalando, Delivery Hero. Sap has some very innovative departments, but their Reputation all in all is shite, yes.

Also most of souther europe doesn't have the get rich quick mentality. They live by "dolce vita" - the good life. Nobody is gonna be bending over backwards here to become a millionaire anytime soon. They happily live with 20k€ a year and their families and Relationships.

I still hate the shitty software we make here in europe/germany but we are working hard here to improve that. And if a european company tells you they offer a API or Service, they probably wont shut it down because it went out of falvour this month.

notanormalnerd··on Court rules climate change “duty of care” to future generations exists
If you watch close and have a look at the demografics of germany, than this is not judical overreach but a reminder for the baby boomer generation (over 40% of voters) that they indeed have to take care not to leave an unlivable planet.

The young generations (below 35) have basically no real demografic power and are underrepresented in politics. You saw that with covid and who was impacted the most and who will pay at the end of the day.
