notadev··on Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes again delays start of 11-year prison term
I feel like everyone just overlooked the prisoners working at McDonalds portion of your comment. Where does that occur?
notadev··on EVE Online player uses obscure rule to pull off biggest heist in game history
I’m ashamed to say I played a mobile game for just over a year called Lords Mobile. It’s basically a F2P game where you can only be competitive if you are P2P. You have a castle and can train troops, craft armor, etc., and the more money you put in the more is at stake. The mechanics make it so you have to log-in at least once a day, otherwise an enemy guild will basically set a rally in order to “zero” you. Zero basically wipes out all the real money invested in the game. I wouldn’t call it a gambling addiction, but maybe it’s something to do with the sunken cost fallacy?

What surprised me was the sense of community around it. I met people from all over the world who play. We had discords, ran guilds, had actual leadership responsibilities, would call people in the middle of the night when they were being rallied, etc. Before I decided I was done, I was running bot accounts (to act as guild banks and whatnot), and it felt like a part time job. It was very involved for a mobile game. If I’m honest it was probably the sense of community I felt, which I hadn’t felt online in many years, that made me stick around. Still I don’t recommend anyone actually play it.

notadev··on Large language models are having their Stable Diffusion moment
If you didn’t have a $5,000 MacBook, could you run it on a GPU over a long period of time? Would you be able to feed it a list of prompts that maybe take all night to process and have the responses by morning?
notadev··on Adrian Schoolcraft: Police Officer Forcibly Committed for Reporting Corruption
The podcast This American Life did a story on Adrian in 2010. You can hear parts of the audio recordings as well. https://www.thisamericanlife.org/414/right-to-remain-silent/...

Saving this for when I eventually get pulled into HR. “Yes I was on PornHub, but was only looking at it for the UX inspiration”.
notadev··on The Black Ships Shock: A Historic Encounter That Changed Japan
In short, Commodore Perry wanted to trade with Japan. Being isolationist they declined. So Perry believed they would have to be persuaded by force. He launched a barrage of cannons while anchored in Tokyo Bay. Supposedly they were just gunpowder explosions celebrating US Independence Day, but it was likely a show of force that eventually persuaded the Japanese to open trade relations.

If this were in the US or UK, Perry would likely be hated for whatever and his statue torn down. In Japan, they have multiple statues and celebrate Perry’s opening of trade relations every year with the Black Ship festival in Shimoda, Japan. The festival includes food stalls and even a parade. I’ve gone a few times, it’s nothing particularly interesting but a good experience overall.

notadev··on Kind Engineering: How to Engineer Kindness
> “Kind is about being invested in other people, figuring out how to help them, meeting them where they are.”

That seems like a lot of work. Can I just not be rude?

notadev··on Ask HN: What API's do people wanna buy/pay for?
Crime data by location. Many real-estate sites removed their crime maps due to racism, but I think it’s still a valid metric to consider when moving to a new location.

notadev··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
What would multiple showed a day look like? Morning, post-lunch, before bed? How long are the showers and do you use any soap at all?
notadev··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Flossing can be sort of boring, so I purchased one of those electric water-piks to floss using blasts of water. It’s similar to the little water gun they use at the dentists. It works really well, kinda fun, and makes your mouth feel super clean. Can’t recommend it enough.

notadev··on The Disappearance of the Ashtray
You can still find candy cigarettes on Amazon. They used to have candy/gum cigars as well. Anyone remember big league bubble gum? It came in a package similar to that of shredded chewing tobacco, and the gun itself was shredded. It was popular with kids who would mimic their favorite tobacco chewing baseball player. I recently bought a pack I saw for sale to show my kids and instinctively put a wad in my lip when I was a kid.

notadev··on How much are tech companies paying for talent?
Netflix’s range for SWE is $90K to $900K. I imagine you’d have to be a hell of a negotiator to get anywhere near the high-end.
notadev··on Walgreens Executive Says Shoplifting Threat in San Francisco Was Overstated
Also most chains make it policy that staff can’t intervene. There was a viral story some years back where a woman working loss-prevention at Best Buy prevented a thief from getting out of the store with stolen goods only to be fired. There was a more recent video where nearly the whole sales floor at a Best Buy banded together to stop snatch-and-grab thieves. The Internet loved it, but it was expected they’d all eventually get fired as well.
notadev··on Why are there so many tech layoffs, and why should we be worried?
Just speculating here, but I think Musk gutting Twitter staff was the catalyst. Layoffs were already happening, but Musk went to the extreme and it worked, at least from the outside looking in. A day after his initial layoffs is when Meta and Amazon both made the news for upcoming layoffs.
notadev··on Heavenbanning: Using AI models to commit banishment through praise

notadev··on Opting out of facial recognition at an American airport
We’re not talking about LGB, just the T. Aside from being OK with them serving in the military, other trans issues are either split down the middle or in the Disapprove category. Not sure why “gender identity” is lumped in with the other sexual orientations except for the purpose of co-opting.
notadev··on Opting out of facial recognition at an American airport
>You're preaching at me about neutral sources while throwing conservative AM talk radio and Rupert Murdoch newspaper links my way. That's kind of ironic and hypocritical. I just did a quick Google to find the links, but is there anything specific in either of them that was incorrect?

I’m aware of how definitions work and change, but these were changed for political reasons, not because society writ large changed. I’m also intimately familiar with the multiple definitions of “run” as I’ve had to write them all by hand, several times, during detention in my secondary school years. Perhaps you should read the definition for caution, because it’s certainly not preaching.

notadev··on Opting out of facial recognition at an American airport
Merriam Webster has recently been changing definitions to appease activists or governments, so I would caution against using them as a neutral source.

notadev··on AI: Markets for Lemons, and the Great Logging Off
What about society being shaped in the dreams of other wealthy people, like Karl Schwab or George Soros? Is that OK?
notadev··on Maids trafficked and sold to wealthy Saudis on black market
I know a lot of people, especially Americans, just can’t help but take a crap on America every chance they get, but we’re talking about a 15 year old crime, for which the perpetrators were held accountable versus an active slave trade in Saudi Arabia. Human trafficking in all forms is abhorrent but these are not the same IMHO.
notadev··on AI: Markets for Lemons, and the Great Logging Off
Can you elaborate on what you mean by doom and gloom being the real problem? Are you saying it’s more of a perception issue that can be changed by the user?
notadev··on CCC captures U.S. military biometrics database
The headline should be edited to specify the database was specific to Afghanistan citizens.

I recommend this because when I read the headline I assumed it was referring to the Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) which is the central system used to verify US military, dependents, contractors, GS civilians, etc., when accessing US military bases or other secure areas.
