1) Yes for quite some time I only do fairly basic/uninteresting things. That being said, gnu/linux has become far easier to use than it was, say 20 years ago.

Point 2: What makes you say that, and what principles specifically are you assuming every gnu/linux user has that would lead them to Free/OpenBSD (and not dragonfly or net)?

X always worked fine for me and my basic use case. I do agree something new is needed to replace it, but I don't have a need to try it until it's more mature.

I think at least one of their devs uses OpenBSD as their primary OS, but I read that as a comment, so not sure if ture. It's great XFCE is available across distros and the BSD's

I love thinkpads, but after getting used to a mac trackpad I see why people always raved about it. That being said I do miss the trackpoint, and I like the old school t420 keyboard.

I can't really compare anything to windows because (luckily) I don't have to use it.

I just wanted to try one of the new M1 machines, and was aware that MacOS has some unix/bsd roots that would make it feel a little familiar. After using it, it feels like a team of people made unix/bsd into a user friendly OS, even if it is more locked down than a linux distro.

I'm on my first macbook--a M1 air--and now I finally see what the hype wrt apple hardware is. I love thinkpads, but between the battery life, the speakers, display, just how light it is, never runs hot no matter what I do to it....I can't believe I went this long without trying one out.

I have T420 (and T430s) as well, but I think at this point it no longer qualifies as a daily driver. Even with 16GB of RAM there are times when the machine is just slow. Even with a replacement battery I only really get a couple of hours. Performance is just not there for anything serious. I've used linux and BSD's on it for about 5 years. It's true you can repair it fairly easily, but after getting my hands on a refurbished M1 MBA, there is a huge difference in quality, performance, battery life, etc.

I'm not sure it's that specifically but that definitely doesn't help.....

Agreed. I recently tried out OI "hipster" and the way boot environments are integrated into caja (the file manager) with Time Slider was so smooth it got me thinking why something like it wasn't more popular in linux.

Right but in the example you use you could write sl*r or sl-r instead of slur and anyone reading would understand you and you would get past the filter.

In what context would you want to write out a slur against someone as part of some online discussion? Even if you were quoting some external source, you could just censor the slur/hate speech, and still carry on with the discussion.
