noptic··on Boris: A tiny but robust REPL for PHP
just get a VM running linux. If you are to lazy to set up PHP get a pre build stack at http://bitnami.com/stack/lamp
noptic··on Why Isn't Gatsby in the Public Domain?
Are you positive that this is a internet issue? I think it is a user problem.
noptic··on Why Isn't Gatsby in the Public Domain?
I see what you did there
noptic··on Rent-a-coder hilarity (2008)
They do not really read what the customers want until the bid is accepted.

    foreach(newProject as project){
        new Bid( projeckt.averagePrice * 0.8 ), "We are the best nd have done this many times");
    }
In the most cases they can really solve the problems and get good ratings.

Some clients include a "password" in the project description and ignore all messages without the password.

noptic··on Rent-a-coder hilarity (2008)
client: I need a software tht can find information about my mp3 files online and it must work 100% correct

me: What information do you have and what do you want to look up?

client: I have the folder and file names and there are 5 webpages like google where you can search for music. I want the programm to get the right song info from this. BUT IT MUST WORK 100% right no error ever! I had 6 other programmers try it but no one can make it right!

(the real clients english was even worse)

noptic··on The //* /*/ //*/ comment toggle trick
This is a nice trick for quick comparison and thats it.

I actually use this a lot for performance comparison. This way it is easy to toggle between the olt d and the new implementation and see how long it takes to run the code 1000 time in javascript.

But I think anyone who check ins something likes this should be slaped.

noptic··on I Knew a Programmer Who Went Completely Insane
It is far to easy to fall into this trap. At my last job my boss always tryed to finish all my tickets until a friend in managment told me about a conversation he had with our boss. It boils down to: "Does he gt his work done?" "Yes, sometimes he has to stay in late but he gets the job done" "Then we are not giving him enough work. If there are days where he gets the job done and leave on time, there must be times when he finishes his tickets before office hours are over."

At my new job things are a lot better. When I started I screwed up a couple of times because I tryed to make things work by putting in over time and fighting until the last minute when things went south, where all I had to do was tell the mangment why I need more time / manpower like anyone else in my company.

noptic··on The key to a great work ethic? Glucose
Every byte of bandwidth wasted on this article is a byte to much. Act now! Together we can stop bs (byte slips)
noptic··on EFF Politely Asks PTO to Stop Issuing So Many Crappy Software Patents
Simple sollution: Only grant patents on real sollutions. If you can solve the same problem in another way it is a independent work. Do we realy want a world with 1 browser 1 OS and 1 pragramming alnguage?
noptic··on What happens when you give 4chan images of the Boston Marathon?
Turning a tragedy into a proof that the gouverment is evil? Troll level: Awesome.
noptic··on Designing Open Source
Bootstrap only takes away the most basic work. This is a relieve for anyone who knows enough about design to be called a designer.

The only "designers" really loosing work are people eho read 1 book about html and css and want to earn some "fast and easy" money as "designers".

noptic··on How can we get Google Support?
have you ever worked in support? The 2 minutes are not even enough to tell people that "this is the wrong hotline".

Once there is a Google support people will contact google and ask for help about anything on the web.

For many people Google is the web!!! IThere are peopple calling the ISPs support because "this site on your internet is broken". rJust imagine what would happen to google.

noptic··on I pirated Game of Thrones season premiere
Thanks to piracy thinks are getting better. now most us series are translated within weeks. Supernatural had a 3 years(!) delay in germany.

There will allways be people who want everything for free but there REALLY are people like me who want to pay but get rejected because of "licensing issues" aka "wait till it is published in your country even if you hate the voice over and want to watch the original anyway"

noptic··on I pirated Game of Thrones season premiere
Look over there! The Point! Oooooo you missed it.
noptic··on My crazy idea to piss off spammers
My thought exactly.
noptic··on As 3D Printing Becomes More Accessible, Copyright Questions Arise
Depends on the printer. Not all use plastic. Soem use a lasr to cut the modell from a solid block. You can 3D print a complete chess set out of steel this way :). This is far to expensive for home use, but I gues you could use it to create fake car parts, and sell them for half the price.
noptic··on What it's Really Like Working with Steve Jobs
Change the title OR the text. This was an interesting article about the cool things he did. Steve Jobs was involved in this work but this is NOT what this article is about.
noptic··on The joys of having a Forever Project
In the best case you can break it down in reusable parts. I took some of the commandline tools I created for my forever project, and turned them into a stand alone application.
noptic··on The joys of having a Forever Project
My forever project tought my many Important things.

Since I do not have to reach a target I can try solving old problems in new ways and see how it works out in the long run.

My forever project spawned some nice sub modules which I use in productiv code.

In some branches of my forever project I tryed things generally known to be bad style to see some of the problems myself.

noptic··on The joys of having a Forever Project
I´m about dreaming such a language for years. But I already have a forever project so I never really did anything about it :/ Got anything online? I´d love to watch this project.
noptic··on Is learning a framework harder than to learn programming?
It really depends on the frameworks documentation.

It does not matter if you want to learn framework a language or how to use a products API.

What really matters is if there is a good a documentation and some tutorials to get you started.

I often settle for the sollution with less features but a better usabilty.

noptic··on Why we've decided to stop producing TNW Magazine for Android
Fragmentation is.. ...10% bad luck. You are stuck and there is nothing you can do ...90% bad planning. And THIS is why you use abstraction.
noptic··on Why we've decided to stop producing TNW Magazine for Android
As far as I can renember this is a core feature of HTML5 video support: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5_video#Multiple_sources
noptic··on Ask HN: The Ethics of Quid Pro Quo
That us one of the reasons you should ALWAYS set milestones. Whnever you reach a milestone the client should give you feeddback and pay you a portion of the total cost.

If you have not been payed for the last milestone, and a reasonable time has passed, you should remind the client to pay you.

If the client does not pay stop working until he does. If you do not reach the milestones in time, you do not get payed.

If the project is headed in the wrong direction you get an early customers feedback.

Of couse these rules should be agreed on BEFORE you start working on the project.
