noptic··on Intel proves once and for all that PCs are not coming back
This guys makes some valid points ... as far as I read the article.

To be honest I stoped reading pretty soon because the valid arguments are burried under a truckload of pointless ranting and "I told you so!".

I have no problem with someone having a strong oppinion but the article is just horrible.

noptic··on Google timer
I always used my stereos build in timer and a death metal CD for the same effect :)

But now my stereo and my CDs gather dust and I (and my neighbours) do not miss them.

noptic··on Show HN: UI Concept – Focus Transition
Great idea. Possible improvement: Only show the effect if the user uses the tab key. IMHO the effect is distracting if you use the mouse and are already looking at the focused object.
noptic··on Show HN: Game of Bins - Javascript Puzzle Game
Why not? It is text only and at first I did not even notice it. Hopefully not only the HN crowd will play the game so it would take a exrtra "Show HN only" landing page without adds to get rid of them.
noptic··on Just go home
Worst job ever: During a semester break (vacation?) I worked in a factory which produced wax powder.

A machine filled packages with various powders and them on a convoy belt.

If a package was to heayvy or to light another mechanism pushed of the belt intpo a little bay where I was postioned.

My job was correcting the packages weight and putting it back on the belt.

I often had shifts where I got 3(!) package in 8 hours and I had no other dutys, and I could not bring a book or anything else to kill the time.

noptic··on Just go home
Forget about the "sneaky" part unless you have your own office. If you do something you are not supposed to do (and which might endanger your employment) your concentration will suffer.
noptic··on Immigrants lacking papers work legally – as their own bosses
I checked back: In this case it was local venue restrictions.
noptic··on Immigrants lacking papers work legally – as their own bosses
Bring to mind: A frind of mine plans and builds equipment for expos. When he went over to the US he brought all finished work and plans but was required to hire someone to assemble it :/
noptic··on Google security exec: 'Passwords are dead'
And still there are "modern" games and services telling me that my password "May only contain letters and numbers" Really? Are you stupid or something?
noptic··on How to Advertise on a Porn Website
I heavily depends on what your non-profit does (help people with cancer?) and on what porn sites you advertise, but in generall I think it is a bad idea.

For many people porn and fast food are BOTH "guilty pleasures" so food adds are a great idea, beacuse the audience is already in the right mindset.

People visit porn sites to get some exitment and relief, or to get into the right mood (Fk the rules / I need something to cheer me up/ Lets stay in bed).

Your add will remind the visitors of something they SHOULD care / worry about and will ruin the experience.

noptic··on PeerCDN - A P2P CDN
Look like a great but dangerous tool. Stealing users bandwidth and publishing users IPs is a no go, but it could be really handy for online games and other web applications with lots of assets. "To improve server performance game data may be transfered from your browser to other players. Other players might see your IP."
noptic··on How not to check the validity of an email address
The first time someone wanted to hire me was even before I started college. "so how much will you bill me?" "Well right now I get 7€ (9.2$ at current rate) for unloding trucks ..." He interupted me before I could finish the sentence and demand 8€. "I can not pay you 7€! taht is just to much!"

Sooooo I declined but someone took the job ... for under 8$ an hour.

How much quality can you expect for that price???

noptic··on He got 1%, we can't hire him
When I was still at the university, our statistics class was used as a sample for a company creating such tests.

We had to fill out a test and hand a second form to someone who knew us well enough to judge our social behaviour.

The goal of this was to validate that the test.

When asked what would happen if the test was not valid, the company representative answered:

"There are 2 ways to handle such a proiblem: we can change the test or we can try again with another sample group. We prefer to change the sample group."

noptic··on MTU Study: 3D printers may soon be in every home
Why would i want one at home? I do not even have a 2d printer! I can handle nearly all of my stuff without paper so it is a lot cheaper to go to the copyshop next door.

I know a 3d printer is used in a different way but I would rather go to a 3d print shop with high quality printers and a good choice of materials and post print services (polishing, coloring, ...).

noptic··on [dead]
Why would the 'thief' keep the phone? In the article it says that this happens regulary. Well but he BOUGHT a stolen phone. Yes but did he know it?

Years ago I bought some used hardware from one of my neighbours. It did not pay the full price but it was still far from cheap.

About 2 weeks later he wanted it all back because he had been cought on camera stealing it at work and his boss would not press charges if he brought it back.

noptic··on On why removing features makes people unhappy
This will burn all my carma:

Can we please talk about what he says?

Is the topic in any way related to good blog design?

There are quite a few blogs without capitalization and if it is really so important to you feel free to write about it.

IMHO All those comments on design/grammar/font/... in every discussion on HN are mere distractions and add no value.

noptic··on David Cameron cracks down on online pornography
Best get one of those: http://www.streetshirts.co.uk/sites/streetshirts.co.uk/conte...

Disclaimer: No I do not get money for this.

noptic··on The hot new technology in Big Data is decades old: SQL
In the last years many SQL alternatives where created, and I think that this is great. For a long time it was used as an almighty Hammer.

You want a live chat system for thousands of user? Use SQl! You want a Page for your Restaurant? Use SQL.

Some people got so feed up with SQL that we forgot how simple* and powefull it is.

noptic··on A Shiny Content Farm is Still a Content Farm

noptic··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
Not yet. But nice people like you might change that. BTW: Where do I get a 3 hour train ride for 3$ ;)
noptic··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
True. Do not ban laptops. Kick idiots.
noptic··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
Well the topic of this article is that it is not working out for many coffe shops...
noptic··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
There is none. If you sit arround for 3 hours with 1 cup of coffee your an <insert rude stuff here> no matter what you are doing.
noptic··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
This is a real problem for bookshops and customers. Some people come in several times a week read for free and even bring in lunch. Often the magazines and newspapers are left in a state which is no longer fit for sale.

So what can we do?

In my opinion those people are making things worse for the shop and all decent customers, so just kick them!

But after years of "the customer is always right, many people have become so arogant that demanding acceptable behaviour from your customers will definitly kill your shop.

noptic··on Coffee shops look to oust 'laptop hobos'
> I am not paying for the 0.1 dollar that the coffee actually costs to make, I am paying for a place to sit

true

> I am paying for a place to sit as well and do something with my time. Be it 10 minutes or 3 hours

3 hours for 6$. This is 2$ an hour for your table. At this rate the coffeshop is loosing money.

It all boils down to the question:

Do you really think this is fair?

noptic··on Skype's Principal Architect explains why peer-to-peer was eliminated
TL;DR Skype P2P performs on mobile devices so we removed the featues people loved about Skype and kept the name.
noptic··on What every web developer must know about URL encoding
>> A URL cannot be analysed after decoding

Sadly true. Drovr me nuts trying to analyze a URL on Apache/PHP.

noptic··on Erato - simple and beautiful markdown editor
Can you change the title to: Erato - simple and beautiful markdown editor for Mac Markdown is used on many systems and not everyone is intrested in reading about Mac software.
noptic··on Boris: A tiny but robust REPL for PHP
Looks great now I can dump my 60 lines of tape, shoe strings and "I do not have time for this" and use a serious tool.

Thank you.
