nopassrecover··on Assange 'to run for Australian senate'
The cabinet (i.e. ministers) are appointed by the party with the most seats, but members of parliament themselves are most certainly elected directly by the local area which they represent.

The senate is a bit different, where you have the option to select either the specific senators you want, or to delegate your votes to a party to allocate.

nopassrecover··on Why did the Windows 95 Start button have a secret shortcut for closing it?
I just learned recently that Ctrl-Shift-Esc brings up Taskmgr.

Up until then I'd been relying on Ctrl-Alt-Del, which in W7 tends to bring up its own screen and is slower due to shell context changes.

nopassrecover··on A personal link mill
Enjoyed the article, but how is this sufficiently different from say NewsBlur?
nopassrecover··on Anti-Patterns for Technical Leaders
I was confused too. I think (given the counterpoint to the Naysayer) that this could best be described as the "Yes Man".

Incidentally, this article (like Joe Brockmeier's other articles) really needs some good editing, which is disappointing given that Joe claims to be a technology writer and editor.

nopassrecover··on Did Mark Zuckerberg just accidentally leak the new newsfeed design?
The feed itself still has a long way to do. I want to try a Timeline feed.
nopassrecover··on 3 Ways I Would Improve Hacker News
Strongly disagree with this. It's fairly trivial to configure this behaviour in your browser (a plugin in the worst case), and really not much of a burden to hold shift when you click your link anyway. The cost for everyone else is that there's no easy way to get "new window" links to open in the same page, which is particularly frustrating on mobile devices.
nopassrecover··on Facebook's S-1 Filing
They do have the hackers for it at the moment (and it's not like Google is trying to keep them).
nopassrecover··on Nerd Discovers Exactly Which Day was Ice Cube's Good Day
I had never heard the song but this is pretty cool inference work. This comment questioning the conclusions is great as well: http://andreawoo.wordpress.com/2012/01/27/nerd-discover-exac...
nopassrecover··on I Was Just Told “You would not have made it through the weekend”
Which is a reckless attitude for a doctor that leads to treatment resistant tuberculosis.
nopassrecover··on Ninja Blocks: Connect your world with the web
I'm not sure what you're troubled by. They're using Kickstarter to pre-sell rather than a traditional sales channel.
nopassrecover··on Ninja Blocks: Connect your world with the web
It's interesting to see an incubator-backed startup leveraging Kickstarter. Definitely a pretty cool concept though.
nopassrecover··on No More Résumés, Say Some Firms
Right and many disagree with the idea of paying for application (see also the similar concepts of "no spec work" and "don't pay to pitch")
nopassrecover··on Why Don’t Smartphones Have A “Guest Mode”?
This was done to me by cousins and brothers maybe 4-5 times (with very well developed games before each time). I understand the frustration (although what you describe sounds a bit full on) particularly as I'm pretty sure you had to start a new game then save.
nopassrecover··on Simple but Interesting Features of VS2010 and C# 4.0
The "ugly" c-style C# syntax is far more expressive. Using VB.NET feels like using crayons to draw portraits.
nopassrecover··on Poll: Devs, Have You Used oDesk or eLance?
The OP asked if you had used these services to find work. I think your response counts as a vote for "I've tried, but was unable to find a project that was worth my time".
nopassrecover··on Siri, Why Are You So Underwhelming?
A pretty fundamental example that underwhelmed was "what time is it?" (I'm in Australia). Siri responded with "Sorry, I don't know the time in 123 StreetImOn Street". This is doubly "amusing", as if I ask "where I am" Siri will tell me maps aren't supported outside the US. Long story short, to find out where I am I need to ask for the time.
nopassrecover··on Aussie Tech Gold Rush
Melbourne does feel a whole lot more .. enthusiastic shall we say? Still Adelaide has its perks if you have the right networks, and generally a decent salary/cost balance for what that's worth. Happy to grab a drink with any HN'ers that are in/stop by Adelaide btw.
nopassrecover··on Aussie Tech Gold Rush
God HN has grown - few Adelaide users on here now.
nopassrecover··on Our Unpaid, Extra Shadow Work
Interesting that you think RFID will detect which items you owe but that you will still have to swipe a physical card to pay. How would RFID accurately distinguish your products from another customer's? What about fruits and vegetables, or other items either untagged or charged by weight?
nopassrecover··on [dead]
"...not associated with nuclear bomb testing"

Although completing the quote makes it far less hyperbolous.

nopassrecover··on Everything is getting heavier
Editorialised title - actual title is "The Search for a More Perfect Kilogram". Wired should use your title though ("Everything is Getting Heavier") - it's a catchy title for an interesting article. Also the picture half-way down is totally a TARDIS.
nopassrecover··on Open source music search/play app for all OSes
1-4, I'd suggest just leaving the left menu up all the time for now as a stopgap until you can play around with some new ideas (e.g. I might then start with a smaller menu / expanding to bigger on hover, rather than just a hint of purple). The UI looks pretty cool, but it has to be usable. I think there's a search box too, as it popped up now and then. I'd try making that always visible for a bit and see what people think.

I think 5 is perhaps a latency issue, and because there's no feedback when things are happening it seems non-responsive For instance, if it's buffering a song ready for playing, a progress bar or even a spinning circle would be nice, rather than me clicking Play a few times because I'm not sure what's happening. Likewise, when I click a song to open up the "Play or Download" right menu, nothing tends to happen a lot of the time, and I'm not sure if it has ignored my clicks, or whether it's just doing it's thing and catching up (I suspect the latter). Ideally, if you can open up the right menu (the Play or Download one) as soon as I click a song, even if you then have to do loading stuff before play works it would seem more responsive. Just remember the user needs feedback to know something is happening.

Regarding download button, perhaps "grey it out" for now, and put a "coming soon" near it or something?

Anyway, these are nitpicks that are easily fixed, I think the app itself is a pretty awesome effort.

nopassrecover··on Open source music search/play app for all OSes
Cool in principle, but the usability and latency of the app are ruining it for me at the moment. Still I'm sure these will be fixed. Would be good to get some recommendations in there somehow too.

For reference, just annoying me at the moment are 1) menus on side are barely noticeable, 2) menu on side is hard to click, 3) when trying to click menu I end up clicking outside the app more times than not due to latency on show 4) not obvious how to navigate app, 5) whenever I click anything it may or may not happen, and may happen 30 seconds later while I'm doing something else, 6) I'm not sure if the Download button is working, nor where it is downloading to if it does. On the plus side, when I did eventually get a song to load it played the correct song so could be a cool YouTube alternative.

nopassrecover··on ISPs "exaggerate the cost of data"
I can't speak for your experience with TPG, but a lot of users I know on TPG hate the fact that they have "unlimited downloads" but in reality get limited bandwidth due to an oversold service.

I decided I prefer a limited plan where I know what service level (particularly latency and throughput) I can expect. For instance, plans with Adam and Internode are not that much more than a TPG plan for more usage than I'll forseeably use (I get 500gb a month or so at 20mbps + VOIP for $100), but the difference in gaming latency and actual speeds are both considerably more stable and faster than friends on TPG.

nopassrecover··on Ask HN: What data structure does our brain use?
I found LSD did not introduce things that weren't present already. Instead, it removed the filters that are necessary on a daily basis for me to get things done, and suddenly I was aware of and appreciating all the things that my subconscious normally sees and dismisses. The most vivid example of this was an awareness of the patterns and textures surrounding us all the time, as well as the relationship between spatial objects (e.g. a sign or a tree stood out as significant, rather than part of the "background").
nopassrecover··on Show HN Remindlyo helps you remember to make important phone calls
Looks cool. What major element differentiate you from say http://www.appointmentreminder.org/ ?
nopassrecover··on [dead]
I wish articles allowed downvotes. I suppose on some level it's technically satire (the timeless "value of a life" discussion), but it's in poor taste and poorly executed. Clearly this is targeted at gaining a few pageviews and doesn't strike me as interesting or entertaining to the HN community.
