In mice the link is clear and simple to test.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11311462/

In people for what cancers have been investigates there is also evidence of a link, but not enough studies have been done to say that it's the case for all cancers. This is absense of evidence rather than evidence of absence.

>they're environmentally friendly from the narrow perspective of energy use but they make the lived environment much worse in other ways, particularly the horrid clinical high-K ones people who want to make a 'modern' ambiance love so much.

They are friendly in the same way the feeding a baby petrol is. Sure it's more energy efficient, but humans aren't machines where input = output. It's going to take decades to get rid of all of them, and then even longer for all the cancers that blue light causes to work themselves out. It's amazing that we invented a new asbestos and put a green wash on it.

noosphr··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
You can see the milky way at any location with a sqm of 19 or higher. True darkness is sqm 22.
noosphr··on We’re forgetting what darkness feels like
Outside of a few places like the Himalayas or Australia isn't not possible to see the darkness everyone lived in until street lighting.

This is the most accurate map and it still under reports light pollution under 21.5sqm https://www.darkskysites.com/

Worse satellite constilations may make it impossible to have a dark sky anywhere: https://arxiv.org/html/2604.09427v1

Led lights have caused such a massive increase in light pollution, let alone the effects on humans due to the blue spike, that they should be banned outright.

Thank you, this is terrifying.
noosphr··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
The question is what was done to them in 2008 and 2010. You'd best read the history because it will happen to you soon enough.
noosphr··on NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates
I've build a similar project in university in two weeks with lisp, spending 30 minutes before bed on it. The difference being that it started with analogue voltages in the transistors.

I'm starting to think people impressed by LLMs are for the first time in their life not using a hammer on fastening screws and deeply impressed by tools that font fight them every step of the way.

noosphr··on AI needs $6T in annual revenue to justify data centre boom
Same thing that happened to blue collar work witch used to be the path to the middle class before the 1990s. The economy managed to create plenty of wealth without doing anything for 40% of the population.
noosphr··on US sanctions force The Netherlands off Microsoft and toward alternative NixOS
I would like to thank the US for single handedly killing the EU cashless society plans.

I would like to request the US sanctions all members of the EU parliament asap.

The British like usual.
noosphr··on The internet discovers TLA+. Now what?
TLA+ is what unit testing looks like when a mathematician designs it.

Old people die.
noosphr··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
>Land is a finite, shared resource.

Everything is a finite shared resource.

That's the point of ownership.

>The idea of treating land as a pure asset has had a lot of negative social effects and ultimately will lead to a kind of neo-feudalism where the megarich own everything and the underclasses are perpetual renters.

The idea that land is not a pure asset leads to regular feudalism.

noosphr··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
A land tax means that you don't own property but rent it.

This is bringing us back to the dark ages in terms of land rights.

It very much does matter.

More like:

>Hey can I come into room 1?

Sure. That's the lobby.

>How about room 101?

Sure. That's where we keep the nuclear launch button. Don't press anything red.

noosphr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
>Do you feel like systemd has been collecting your PII since 2020?

I don't know, I use Open BSD.

noosphr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
>but I don't find that realistic or productive.

Go back to 1996 and tell someone that in 30 years the government will be legally able to look at everything they have written, taken pictures of, or recorded in the last 5 years in private and it use to retroactively punish them for any crime.

This is the law for cellphones and computers for anyone who lives within 100 miles of an ocean, border or airport.

The most draconian possible next steps we can imagine are far too Utopian for the world we live in.

noosphr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
If we could add arbitrary fields to HTTP headers and the IETF started adding PII to every request then worrying about what other fields they will add is a valid.

Systemd is doing just that and calling everyone who disagrees with them fascist.

noosphr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
That's great. Now that you have all the infrastructure in place the next request by the government will be a felon flag. You already have everything there, what's the big deal?
noosphr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Why doesn't it do the same for sex, gender, religion, race, sexuality, felon etc.?

Those are also just fields, and there's incoming laws in countries that target them. No internet for unsupervised women for example. You wouldn't want to break usability for the fine government servants of Afghanistan would you?

noosphr··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
Just remember that systemd added age verification in Linux without anyone asking.

There are freedom respecting Linux projects, but those lead by redhat\ibm employees (past and present) don't.

noosphr··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
They seem to have a biological clock and are just more isolated from the effects of aging. Humans are similar that we live three to four times as long as other great apes.
noosphr··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
This is where being a real parent vs a theoretical one makes a huge difference to your take. After seeing how much damage to their kids people adapted _their_ childhood do, I've started to think that humans should die around 40 with reproduction age being between 10 to 20 - like most other great apes. It's only in increadibly stable environments that waiting for as long as we do for children that it makes sence.

How this number is going to change in the future with exponential growth in the environment is left as an exercise to the reader.

noosphr··on Aging may be a program, not a breakdown
The animals are wildly simple however. It may well be that ageless is only possible before you develop a brain.
noosphr··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
The law disagrees.
noosphr··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
The AGPL didn't go far enough because it didn't limit freedom 0 to natural born humans. In the 00s/10s it was corporations. Today it's AI.

If it has no soul to save and no body to torture it deserves no rights.

noosphr··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
>It's the robbery of all of our culture to sell it back to us at a mark-up. Crimes this large are crimes against humanity.

Yeah the introduction of copyright was truly criminal.

> So many people whose life's work got appropriated without consideration, compensation or consent it is baffling.

Oh wait ...

noosphr··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
I'd call the introduction of copyright the largest theft of human labor in history.

No one was compensated for all the free labor they did before the introduction of copyright which copyright holders then privatized. For example the Disney corporation would have had to pay the Brother's Grimm estate for the use of Snow white under the copyright regime they instilled in 1998 with the Mickey Mouse Protection Act.

That we are finally having a sane pendulum swing towards no copyright is a breath of fresh air.

The only way the AI bubble could improve the world more is if we end up becoming a Type I Kardashev civilization to feed the data centers. Then when the bubble pops we suck up all the extra CO2 with all the now idle nuclear power plants we can't shut down.

At the same time it's truly baffling going on a site called _hacker_ news and seeing corpo talking points from the 90s/00s regurgitated wholesale. Information wants to be free.
