noobiemcfoob··on Fedora, UUIDs, and user tracking
Telemetry of any type usually fails to measure precisely the thing you want, but something adjacent that correlates strongly. What you mention are clear problems with inferring usage from downloads, but if you can infer the percentage of downloads that correlates to a machine running Fedora, you don't need much more precision.
noobiemcfoob··on The media are unwittingly selling us an AI fantasy
The benefit about being more honest about their role in society: they get to exploit it more thoroughly.
noobiemcfoob··on A decade-long boom is ending as consumers hang on to devices for longer
Which they'll do until software picks up the slack and demonstrates a real need for advancement or integration of new features. Phones are so underutilized today it is painful.

Inspired by or surfing similar waves of thought. Science fiction can just go further ahead, not bounded by the realities of science and production limitations.
noobiemcfoob··on Why Elon Musk is tweeting about a stainless-steel starship
The frustration at the misuse of the name will only drive further attempts at building the actual thing. Except it too will likely have an exaggerated name when it comes along.
noobiemcfoob··on Drone Sighting Halts Departures at Heathrow Airport
You overestimate the strength of aircraft exteriors. Even minor scratches become important under full stress.

noobiemcfoob··on Ocasio-Cortez Says 70% Ultra-Rich Tax Could Pay for Climate Plan
Because income tax in the first place is a compromise with people who don't want that system at all. So you get a solution that isn't what anyone wants.
noobiemcfoob··on Ask HN: Going from Developer to Manager. What should I know or learn?
It's a double-edge sword. Inherent hierarchies develop, but without being stated and defined, political types are less able to fully exploit them. But when they do, it's less obvious to the non-political types.
noobiemcfoob··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
> I'd wager you are not a great representation of the market that 99% of apps serve

I'd wager no one is. Snapchat has 200 million users. There's some 4 billion people on the internet. Niches are niches, and no one serves everyone.

noobiemcfoob··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
Too many applications abuse notifications and background processing anyway. If you need those features, you have to convince of far more value before I'll install a thing.
noobiemcfoob··on Txqr: Transfer data via animated QR codes
I had already begun using QR codes to provide signed urls to images (graphs showing data and the like). Something like this permits transferring the graph image directly. Walk up to a smart device and retrieve its data without any convoluted pairing process.
noobiemcfoob··on Txqr: Transfer data via animated QR codes
Somehow Kivy applications are allowed permitting a bundled python interpreter... I've never looked into the rules but know of examples in the app store.
noobiemcfoob··on Brain.js
I am a full stack developer using python for everything but what's in my HTML pages. And I'd replace that javascript with python as soon as it would be viable. Javascript is fine for what it is, but the idea of it as a universal language is gross.
noobiemcfoob··on One year into legal pot sales California doesn’t have expected bustling industry
Yeah, but they don't and won't see it that way. The people with these types of reactions seem to think things go away when you make them illegal (probably aided by them having never actually seen the problem firsthand anyway).

You can choose to heed their views or not, but they still get to vote the same as you.

noobiemcfoob··on Show HN: Inside Python Dict – an explorable explanation
An array is a list, but a list is not always an array
noobiemcfoob··on OrbitDB – serverless, peer-to-peer database on top of IPFS
Can we all just accept serverless mainly means decentralized and move on from these posts?
noobiemcfoob··on OrbitDB – serverless, peer-to-peer database on top of IPFS
While you can frame peer-to-peer interactions as as a series of server-client interactions with servers and clients swapping roles... you shouldn't. It's a different paradigm with different implications.

Individual transactions might be usefully described as server-client, but the overall system is not server based. So...serverless.

noobiemcfoob··on Ultima Online spent years developing a system that was destroyed by players
All video games are crippled by player's wish fulfilment trumping any attempt to make genuine mechanics. Everything must be fun in the end.

noobiemcfoob··on Amazon Sends 1,700 Alexa Voice Recordings to a Random Person
If civilization keeps increasing data production around ambivalent use cases, perhaps we can successfully hide >99% of the lethal data siting around out there until its utility expires.
noobiemcfoob··on Amazon Sends 1,700 Alexa Voice Recordings to a Random Person
All it ever takes is the utility outweighing the risk for enough people to support a business.
noobiemcfoob··on How India's sex workers prevented an Aids epidemic
I've yet to see any rule on such language apply across all LBGTQ populations without issue. Don't speak with such authority on issues which has no authority.
noobiemcfoob··on Intel Unveils a Groundbreaking Way to Make 3D Chips
In undergrad and a little bit into grad school, I did some 3DIC research. It was interesting stuff and really exciting to expand architectural design into 3 dimensions.

The biggest problem was heat as the additional layers trap heat in the chip and make it much easier to let the magic smoke out.

I don't see much in this article explaining any groundbreaking approaches and the diagrams offered look much the same as they did 5 years ago.

noobiemcfoob··on Google's 'two-tier' workforce training document
This is a blanket generalization and easily doesn't apply to housekeeping staff or any other number of support roles outside of engineering efforts.

So hard to imagine that a codebase needs janitors too?

noobiemcfoob··on Google's 'two-tier' workforce training document
Yes. Having the option of being redeployed elsewhere or called back but not doing so is not the same thing as not having that option.
noobiemcfoob··on Type hints cheat sheet (Python 3)
Can you elaborate on the hidden bugs annotating old projects revealed?
noobiemcfoob··on Type hints cheat sheet (Python 3)
I can't answer what you're missing as I'm missing it too. Type annotations have seemed to me as useful documentation. If they're strictly enforced, it might make it easier for a new coder to interface with unfamiliar code...but if it was designed well in the first place, duck typing should handle it and raise exceptions as appropriate.
noobiemcfoob··on Ask HN: What are your “brain hacks” that help you manage everyday situations?
If I'm feeling stressed or at all emotional, I mentally list how solid my sources of shelter, food and love. No matter how bad the meeting or argument or whatever, if I have (and will continue to have) a roof, a future meal, love (from pets or people), then whatever stress I'm feeling can't be all that bad.
